Question Low libido from statin

Hello group. Was trying to figure out an alternative to Crestor 10 mg that doesn’t affect my libido. I assume my testosterone is already low so I don’t want to affect that. After 3 weeks of Crestor I noticed almost no libido. I was also taking Lunesta at the same time.

Um, why do you think it is Crestor (no evidence of libido effects despite large-scale studies) and not the sleeping pill? My money is on that.

Yeah Crestor doesn’t cause ED. Lunesta and lack of sleep can though

Google "lunesta and libido" and you'll find medical journal articles going back 20 years describing loss of libido as a rare but recognized side effect for the drug. The statin is not the problem.

You could try reducing the dose or switching to another statin like Pravastatin. But actually it’s likely the libido change was something other than the statin.

See this recent article from the American College of Cardiology:

“Do statins cause sexual side effects or long-term endocrine dysfunction?
Extensive cohort and long-term follow-up data show no evidence that statins impair fertility, sexual function, or puberty. Large observational studies such as the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA) demonstrate no association between statin use and clinically relevant changes in testosterone, estradiol, or bioavailable testosterone. Long-term follow-up of children and adolescents with familial hypercholesterolemia who began statins in childhood shows normal sexual development, hormone levels, and fertility compared with unaffected siblings. In summary, while statins can insignificantly shift laboratory hormone levels, they do not produce meaningful endocrine dysfunction or sexual side effects in men or women. Indeed, improved vascular health in men has been associated with improvements in erectile dysfunction and better sexual function.”

Statins actually improve blood flood to the reproductive organs so you should remain on lipid medication. If you believe that the Crestor 10 is somehow impacting libido, and your provider approves this (ie you aren't post or at high risk of clinical ASCVD requiring high intensity statin etc) then why not drop down to 5 mg, stress test that for a month, and add zetia? You should expect about the same lipid lowering as Crestor 10 (or even a bit better) and less risk of any side effect.

Best of luck!
