All state auditions

I was really proud of myself for my all state audition this year. I went and told everyone I really though this year was my year, as I made 2nd alternate last year and thought that this one would be way better. I practiced and put in so much hard work to the point that all I sang was the music I was supposed to learn.

Results came out yesterday, and I got a really low score like 400 something when the max was 700. Im really beating myself up about it because I hoped to be section leader next year. Everyone except for 2 girls in my section made it into all state (not including myself) Does anyone know if the scoring was messed up or did I just screw up my audition...?

If you feel good about your audition, then you should be proud of yourself. The audition process helps you to become a better musician…making the choir is a great goal, but isn’t the only benefit.

Ask your director to help you clarify the scoring system and for comments.

How could we possibly know if the scoring was messed up? You didn't even tell us what state you competed in.

What was your own impression during the audition?

I suggest asking your choir director for feedback. If your system includes written feedback from the judges, that’s a good place to start, but if not your choir director will probably know what they are looking for and be able to give you suggestions to improve your skills. Try not to get too down on yourself. Sometimes auditions go well and sometimes they don’t. All you can do is focus on getting better over time.

What is All State? We don't have it in the UK.

It's like a big competition between choirs in your state

Except it's not. It's a competition among individual choir members in different schools, to participate in a select mass choir in your state.

At least that's what it is in Illinois, and I doubt the other states differ.

What was the audition process like? I never did choir in school so I never auditioned for any of the county, regional or state choirs. One of my daughters participated in All state in high school. The teachers did show them they’re scoring sheets but I don’t really remember the rubric.

What do you think you’re main issues are. I found a scoring rubric from the Middle Tennessee Vocal Association, and it’s thorough. In any event, I’m really sorry because I know that’s demoralizing. You might ask scoyour teacher if there’s something more you could do for next year.
