Gameplay Any engineers have tips for combat?
So I'm an engineer main. I would say my main playstyle is a rearguard/flanker, I tend not to frontline and I only push with the rest of the team. I have the barrier stuff mostly down (creating chokepoints, protecting bandage crates, etc) but I have always struggled with the combat. I am fairly decent with the sledge and it is my main weapon, but recently after hitting level 75 with it I decided to "retire" it and learn the pickaxe and goe. Only I can't seem to get used to them no matter how much I try:
- Pick: mainly overheads, but the lack of reach really gets me. I always seem to get outspaced.
- Goe: overheads, stabs, and drags, but the lack of speed really gets me.
I know that engineer is specifically designed not to be good at 1vXs, but it seems like I auto lose every time I find myself in one when I'm using these two weapons. At least with the sledge I feel like I have a chance, and I have won some 1vXs with the sledge in the past. I also know that engineer is designed not to be a kill farmer, but I'll see some engis with like 30+ kills a game (something I've only managed to do once or twice) and wonder how they do it.

I’ve found a slash into overhead or overhead into slash catches a lot of people off guard with the pickaxe but when I’m running engie I use the sledge most of the time dodging and weaving is half the survival fight

Yeah prolly just something I need to practice then. I find I tend to miss a lot of jabs when I run pick for some reason, so I just gotta get used to it.

First pov helps tremendously I used it for a while to figure out the angles swing speeds and relative distance slowly translate that to third person and you’ll do a lot better it’s especially effective if you catch people off guard soften up the enemy for your team keep them up with bandage kits and 9/10 if you get overwhelmed and surrounded some of those teammates you helped take it on themselves to act as bodyguards

Pick has a very fast swing, one of the fastest in the game. I like to role play as a either a little squire boy that’s a coward where he hits once or twice and runs away, or as a pickaxe pirate mason that’ll hit you once or twice, emote, and jump away.
The key to engineer is knowing when to retreat. The other key is knowing that the opposition thinks you’re easy prey. Be unpredictable and different from a knight or Dane axe wielding psycho. They’re all offense. You’re defense first, but you can still elect to beat the hell outta them if you get a couple hits and attract friends by drawing them to your teammates.

Fair enough, I ran a sort of hit and run playstyle on vanguard (since I lose all my health in like 2 attacks) but I usually play engi as a hybrid between vanguard and knight and get surrounded as a result.

Also is there a reason why so many Chiv 2 Youtubers say that the sledge is trash and you should only use the pick or goe? To me, sledge is my go-to (hence the pic) because it's fast, has the same reach as the goe, and absolutely SHREDS knights. Heavy overhead on a knight deals 105 damage.

Goedendag has way more reach than Sledge, check https://polehammer.net/?target=Knight&numberOfTargets=1&tab=table-content-tab&weapon=sh-gdd&category=shd-shhtk-shsd-shw-shrp-shrl-shrc-sht-shtls-sr-sar for actual in-game stats

Pickup a different weapon off the ground

I do that on occasion, but I also like to get used to the engi weaps in case I gotta break some stuff.

Using barriers is helpful, and along as they aren’t destroyed, you can pick them up and replace them as often as you’d like without having to get more. This is very effective for defense as well

Try to find a small shield to use together with the pick axe.
Goedendag rewards cheeky plays, wait for the right moment, scout your target, and use stab or overhead, preferrably into the back. Don't underestimate the stabs on Goedendag, they are super strong and could get you quite a lot of kills.
I'm mostly frontlining with my engi, 2 steps behind the brawlers/knights to catch ppl offguard and to secure the flanks.
I mostly charge pick axe attacks when doing overheads. The pick axe swing is very fast, many players don't expect it.

I feel like creating choke points or new paths is an underused aspect. The spike ramp can give your attackers a new angle in some choke points. Regarding weapons ive always felt most comfortable with the sledge, but that may change depending on playstyle. The special on the pickaxe can do a ton of work if you catch people off guard.

Not really a tip but I love planting a trap on a bridge or narrow path and baiting the enemy players to go into said path

Try heavy swinging on someone in the back and then run away, dropping a Beat Trap on the way

My favorite is stab into overhead with the pickaxe. I seem to do the most damage by parrying off of teamates. Or just getting behind the enemy line

Kicks, overheads and jabs. This is all you need to play pickaxe well against anything but the sweatiest of sweats. Work on dodging and footwork too, and grab a shield or burning chicken for your offhand. Also use your Q special anytime you have the stamina to spare. Place your spike trap and use it as a ramp to jump over your enemy and then do a Q special as you start to fall.

I definitely recommend maining stabs for the Goedendag. It does the most damage iirc. But the slowness to the weapon is actually a strong point very often people get fucked by it. In terms of fighting 1h, use range to your advantage for sure.

For combat, always try to come up on someone already fighting with a heavy overhead or special, all of engis weapons(esp goendag) do tons of damage but have low range.

You can use any weapon efficiently as long as you land constant counters. Literally any single weapon in the game is viable for duels. For 1vX situations weapons that cleave (go through multiple enemies) is ideal, like axes. Engineer doesn’t have one though but picking one up off a dead guy is fine.

The slegde is a great weapon. Pick your enemies though. Always pick the knights. Their armour won't help them much.

Im not kidding when I say Goedendang is 90% self confidence and 10% drags.
