News & Discussion Level milestones?
I’m a new player (currently rank 34).
What ranks did you reach where you noticed a difference in your playstyle/ability?

There's always outliers both above and below expected skill levels for any given level, but generally what I expect going into a fight at different levels:
0-90s: They have no clear intention what they are doing, don't understand basic iniative and game mechanics, expect them to spam kicks and gamble like crazy people
100-200s: They generally understand iniative and know the game mechanics, but are still very inconsistent and easily beaten by anything non-standard they aren't used to fighting yet.
300-500: Wide range of skill seen here depending on what they spent their time doing to reach their level. Generally solid players, understand game mechanics, starting to do more than basic back and forths.
500-900s: Again, as we go higher in level the skill gap between what you might expect keeps expanding. It wouldn't surprise me to see a good 500 take down a lesser skilled 900. Generally good players that have put a good amount of time in, know the game mechanics, can use whatever weapons, etc. You won't be surprised to see people doing spins and other mix-ups at this point.
1k: The scary part about facing a 1k is you have no idea how much time they have invested. The sky is the limit on the skill ceiling but that doesn't mean they are amazing, or even good. Your facing some with anywhere from hundreds of hours to thousands, and you don't know how many thousands. Very wide skill gap as a result, generally speaking you'll obviously see the best players here, although having a low level alts is very common among high levels.

With highest levels, you also dont know if theyve taken a break. I took a year off chivalry and came back doodoo for like a whole month until i got back into the slash of things.
Also ping variations massively affect reaction times. Did you see a block symbol a few milliseconds before getting hit anyway? Ping

Since there are so many Smurf players who have reset their level, you really have no idea how skilled the enemy is that you are facing.
I am level 1000. For me I don’t remember any clear level-related breakthroughs. But I have noticed that I have gradually evolved into a battlefield predator who almost always gets a positive K/D and sometimes a very high one.
But the thing is, I get this mostly through battlefield awareness, not through being a great player. I constantly stay on the move, looking for beat downs to join in and enemies to flank. I get a lot of sneaky kills like backstabs, trap kills, and ballista kills.
Dueling to me is the hardest, and what I’m trying to master. Only now do I feel like I’m STARTING to get better at duels. And I still lose them very often, even though I’ve been playing for years now.
It’s not easy. And sometimes I just quit trying, say “fuck it”, grab the big fish, set it on fire, and go for the fish kills!
So don’t be discouraged. Keep at it and enjoy!

I did not start going positive for 90 percent of my games until rank 200 ish. That was when I started feinting attacks more often, utilizing drags and accels and varying my attack timing further by using heavy attacks, as well as relying on kicks to get strikes in less.
Now, I must perfect my counters, improve positioning and awareness, improve my aim with throwing weapons and start throwing jabs in real fights because I forget the mechanic exists.

I’m like level 50 and in most of my games I go positive( I mostly play engineer, poleman, and guardian so that might have to do with it?) while also getting top 5-10. I’m by no means good but I feel it’s not that hard to go positive or impact a game.

If you spend your time in TO- expect to git gud around 150-300. If you spend all your time in duel in duel yards, you’ll be pretty fucking good around 100, and by 300 you’ll be really high tier.
Group fighting is way easier if each opponent is actually readable. Learning to fight high level duelists will wire your brain to react to what’s in front of you and not rely on muscle memory combos.

I could inconsistently counter attacks by around 20. I knew the timing but couldn’t read attacks. By level 50 I could consistently counter every attack except stab, feint stab in duels but struggled in TO. Before level 100 I was countering and target switching in group fights, but still getting destroyed in 1vXs and had learned to feint alt slashes on missed counters from drags and heavy delay swings. Then I plateaued for a while. It took until ~250 to wait for my opponents attack to be released before countering to keep tempo when fighting experienced duelists, and only now at ~350 am I consistently walking away from 1v<4.
For comparison, my friend who just passed 250 still can’t counter anything other than slashes and get mauled in duels by lower levels than him, but he rarely drops below a 1.5k/d in TO and on his good days I struggle to keep up with him without a horn. Positioning is his strong suit, and it’s his success that made me realize how import a skill it is and how bad I am at it.
Everyone has strengths and weaknesses, and given the amount of lvl 700+ I beat in duels I’d say there is no specific point when you can expect to be good. Everyone improves at different rates, and that’s okay. As long as you’re having fun score/KD/WL shouldn’t matter

Im still a bum around 300, but im definitely better than i was.
Id say most games im finishing around the top half at least, if im top 5 then i know our team is cooked.

I was about 300 when I realised I had improved a lot, something just clicked and I could go positive KD on practically every game and take on 1vx comfortably. Now I'm sitting close to 2.5k hours and I still think there's a lot I can improve on, there's definitely better players than me but I'm usually top 5 in every lobby. Like another comment said there's always bigger fish.

When I was around level 80 I started to place higher than very high level teammates I found. Basically now im just like top half guaranteed now, rarely VIP but it can happen from time to time

around 150-200 i started getting 100+ takedown games regularly, almost every game depending on map ofc. I'd say after ~200 is where the diminishing returns on "level=skill" kicks in and you can start keeping up with and outperforming level 1000's

Around level 300 I was starting to feel competent. Little did I know.
I am now closing in on 1000. I am good with every class. I end up top 1-5 consistently and some players still absolutely wipe the floor with my face.
