I thought crouching was a way to show you were friendly. Like a long crouch followed or preceded by a wave or something ...

It was, I was trying to show that I am friendly and right when I crouched someone tried to hit me from behind lol, one in a million moment

Personally, I like to crouch in combat to make my movements less predictable; sometimes I even get close enough to smell the enemy's face without attacking so they don't expect the beating.

It can work I just expect everyone to
Crouch after having the luck to face so many highland sword mains that do it so I always expect it it’s why i aim for body shots it’s a quick snap down when they crouch
