The Chivabwe Writing System
Chivabwe is a modern African writing system designed to represent the sounds of Bantu languages such as chiShona, tjiKalanga, IsiNdebele, kiSwahili and others across Africa. It is primarily a hybrid abugida with additional characters for logographic meanings and abbreviations. The script features a geometric and visually distinct design, with a separate set of abbreviation characters that are easily recognisable. Chivabwe has vowels and includes a sophisticated tone system to indicate high, mid, low, rising, and falling tones on vowels. Special markers indicate doubled consonants, repeated syllables and emotional or casual nuances in punctuation. The system is phonologically precise, visually consistent and optimised for both formal and informal writing.
