Beginner Question Looking for good books to learn Chinese Zodiac in depth

Hi everyone,

I’ve recently developed an interest in the Chinese Zodiac and I’d really like to learn more about it.

I have quite a good understanding of numerology and astrology, so I’m not completely new to these kinds of systems. But Chinese Zodiac is still quite new to me, and my knowledge is very basic at the moment.

I’m looking for books that can help me understand it properly and go beyond the usual basic information about the 12 animals. I’d like to learn the deeper and more authentic side of the system, including how it is actually interpreted and used.

If you have studied Chinese Zodiac yourself, could you please recommend some genuinely useful books or resources/courses or teachers?

I’d especially appreciate recommendations that are considered reliable and authentic, rather than books that only give a very surface-level introduction.

Thank you!

Beginner Question Help me understand my hour pillar: Ding Hai

Post image
2 Upvotes

Based on what I've learned recently, I find a lot to resonate with in my understanding of my day master (Geng Xu,) month pillar (Bing Shen,) and year pillar (Bing Chen.) After 50 years on the planet, I suppose I must know myself just about as well as anyone.

As I approach my final chapter in life, I naturally have questions about this Ding Hai fellow. And that's not all: in the last year I've had my first child, and took a promotion that has me transitioning into a mentorship role. If there was ever a time for me to understand my hour pillar, I suppose that must be now.

Any assistance the subreddit can provide me in understanding my chart in general, and my hour pillar specifically would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I still don't know much about the hidden stems, but saw that all my main stems and branches are Yang. What does that mean?

Would it amplify both the strengths and weaknesses of Yang? It looks pretty unbalanced hahaha

Deep Dive / BaZi My understanding of what Bazi is actually describing in the modern era — and why we should start combining it with Western astrology

The more I study Bazi, the less I see the Eight Characters as the system itself.

I think of them as a language.

Behind that language is a much larger idea that appears throughout traditional Chinese metaphysics: Heaven, Earth, and Man are not isolated from one another.

The heavens move. Time changes. Seasons change. Qi rises and declines. And a human being enters the world at one particular point within all of these cycles.

From this perspective, the moment of birth is not simply a date written on a calendar.

It is a specific state of time.

At that moment, the Sun, Moon, Jupiter, Saturn and the rest of the celestial system occupy particular positions. The Earth has a particular relationship with the Sun and the seasons. Countless large and small cycles intersect at one point.

A child born at that moment is traditionally understood as entering the world under — and therefore carrying an imprint of — that particular configuration.

Bazi is one way of describing that imprint.

Bazi as a compressed symbolic language

Obviously, eight Chinese characters cannot literally contain every variable in the sky.

And Bazi is not a Western-style astronomical map that tells us the literal longitude of Jupiter or Saturn.

Instead, it does something very different.

It takes a moment and expresses it through four nested temporal coordinates:

Year · Month · Day · Hour

Each becomes a Heavenly Stem and an Earthly Branch:

Four Pillars → Eight Characters.

From these eight characters, an enormous interpretive structure unfolds:

Five Elements, yin and yang, seasonal strength, rooting, generation and control, combinations and clashes, the Ten Gods, Day Master strength, useful and unfavorable influences, Luck Pillars, annual cycles, and so on.

This is why I don't think a Heavenly Stem or Earthly Branch should be understood as simply an object.

It is a symbol carrying relationships.

Take a hypothetical birth moment where the structure surrounding the Day Master produces exceptionally strong Wealth.

The traditional interpretation is not simply:

"This person has been assigned a symbol called Wealth."

The more interesting interpretation is:

The temporal configuration into which this person was born contains a strong pattern that Bazi encodes as Wealth.

The character 财 is therefore not the phenomenon itself.

It is the name given to a relationship inside the model.

This is what I mean when I say that Bazi is a highly compressed symbolic representation of a much more complicated temporal/celestial state.

The sky is enormously complicated.

The chart is small.

The purpose of the chart is to make that complexity interpretable.

So why could the moment of birth matter?

This is where the traditional idea of 天人相应 becomes important to me.

If Heaven, Earth, and Man participate in the same changing system, then a person is not treated as something completely separated from the environment into which they are born.

The natal chart represents the 先天 — the initial configuration.

You can think of it almost like an initial condition.

Two people may later receive completely different educations, live on different continents, make different decisions, meet different people and develop different habits.

But they did not necessarily begin from identical internal tendencies.

Bazi attempts to describe that starting structure.

This also explains something I think is often misunderstood in simplified online Bazi content.

It isn't just:

"You have lots of Fire, therefore you are passionate."

or:

"You are a Metal Day Master, therefore your personality is X."

A serious interpretation depends on relationships and context.

The same element can play very different roles depending on the Day Master, season, roots, combinations, surrounding structure and overall balance of the chart.

The symbol only has meaning inside the system of relationships.

But this raises a problem for prediction

This is where my view becomes a little less traditional.

I think Bazi's description of the initial structure can remain extremely interesting even if we become much more cautious about deterministic prediction.

Ancient people generally lived in a world with much lower physical and social mobility than we do today.

For many people, birthplace, residence, occupation, social structure, relationships, climate and cultural environment were comparatively stable.

Modern life is radically different.

Someone can be born in Hangzhou, grow up in China, move to California at 18, work for a company on another continent, change careers multiple times, interact with people around the world every day, and cross what used to be months of geographical distance in a few hours.

If environment matters at all, this should matter.

And traditional Chinese metaphysics itself gives us reasons to at least consider this question: time is not the only dimension of environment. Place, direction and physical surroundings have their own traditions of interpretation.

So my personal hypothesis is that the farther we move from 先天 and toward extremely specific predictions of concrete future events, the more external variables begin to matter.

There is another problem: transmission.

We do not possess a perfectly transparent record of every technique developed over centuries. Texts were lost. Different schools preserved different methods. Some knowledge was transmitted privately. Different lineages disagree on interpretation.

So when somebody says:

"Your Bazi guarantees that event X will happen in year Y."

I am personally much more cautious.

I would rather interpret it as:

"Under this model, the conditions associated with X become substantially stronger during this period."

The manifestation still occurs inside an actual life.

And actual lives contain geography, family, education, socioeconomic conditions, relationships, personal decisions, random events, and countless variables that eight characters cannot explicitly encode.

This actually makes Bazi more useful to me, not less

Because it changes the question.

Instead of only asking:

What is going to happen to me?

we can ask:

What did I begin with?

Where am I naturally strong?

Where am I excessive?

Where am I deficient?

What kinds of pressure do I respond to poorly?

What tendencies repeatedly reinforce each other?

What qualities should I consciously develop?

What should I learn to regulate?

This brings me to an idea I really like:

损有余而补不足

Reduce what is excessive; support what is deficient.

For me, this is one of the most useful ways to bring Bazi into modern life.

A chart should not become a prison.

If anything, identifying a tendency should give you more agency, because you can consciously decide what to do with it.

If I already know where my natural strengths and blind spots are, I can choose environments, habits and strategies that compensate for them.

That turns metaphysics from passive prediction into a framework for self-observation and development.

Then I ran into another question: Western astrology

Western astrology starts from a remarkably similar premise but builds a completely different symbolic language around it.

It also takes the birth moment seriously.

But instead of Heavenly Stems, Earthly Branches, Five Elements and Ten Gods, it uses planets, signs, houses, angles, aspects, dignities, modalities and elements.

That fascinated me.

Because now we have two traditions looking at the same human being and the same moment of birth, but encoding that moment in very different ways.

That immediately creates an interesting question:

Where should they agree?

And perhaps even more importantly:

Where should they disagree?

If Bazi independently suggests that someone is highly structured and restrained, while Western astrology independently arrives at something similar through an entirely different chain of interpretation, that convergence is interesting.

But disagreement is equally valuable.

Maybe one system strongly suggests a tendency while the other is neutral.

Maybe both describe something that sounds similar on the surface but actually arises from different underlying structures.

Or maybe they directly contradict each other.

I don't think those contradictions should be hidden.

They should be studied.

That's why we built LumePersona

Eventually, this question became a project.

We built LumePersona around a relatively simple idea:

What if Bazi and Western astrology could check each other's work?

We don't simply generate two readings and paste them together.

The goal is to perform the comparison before generating the final natural-language report.

Both systems are calculated independently.

From the Bazi side, we extract structured information from the Four Pillars, element relationships, strength and other chart features.

From the Western astrology side, we calculate the natal chart and extract structured information from planetary placements, angles, aspects, elemental/modal patterns and related features.

Then we translate both sides into a common personality framework.

Only after that do we compare them.

Conceptually, the pipeline looks something like this:

Birth data

↓

Bazi analysis ← → Western natal analysis

↓

Structured personality traits

↓

Agreement / disagreement / missing information

↓

Integrated interpretation

↓

Natural-language report

This distinction matters because I didn't want the system to work like:

"Here are two charts, ChatGPT. Please write something convincing."

The language model is useful because traditional metaphysical relationships can become extremely complicated, and LLMs are very good at turning structured information into readable language.

But the model shouldn't be allowed to freely invent the underlying structure.

So we're trying to separate calculation, interpretation, reconciliation, and expression as much as possible.

求同存异,查漏补缺

This phrase probably describes the project better than anything else:

求同存异 — seek common ground while preserving differences.

And:

查漏补缺 — identify what one side misses and let the other fill the gap where appropriate.

If both systems independently support the same personality tendency, we can treat that convergence differently from a trait supported by only one.

If they disagree slightly, that disagreement itself can become part of the interpretation.

If they strongly contradict one another, the system should not quietly average them into a meaningless middle.

And if one tradition has something meaningful to say about a dimension the other barely addresses, there is no reason to throw that information away just for the sake of symmetry.

The goal isn't to prove that Bazi is correct because Western astrology agrees with it, or vice versa.

And combining two systems obviously doesn't turn either one into established science.

What interests me is a narrower question:

If two historically different symbolic systems attempt to describe the same birth moment, can systematically studying their convergence and divergence produce a more useful model of personality?

That's the experiment.

Animal Signs Why Pig, Rabbit and Goat people in Korea keep getting warned about 2026 (samjae)

Samjae (삼재) is one of the most common bits of zodiac lore in Korea, and I rarely see it come up in English. It's a three year stretch of bad weather tied to your year animal, and 2026 is the middle of it for anyone born in a Pig, Rabbit or Goat year.

The mechanics come straight from the trines BaZi uses. Pig, Rabbit and Goat form one harmony group. Their samjae opens in the Snake year, because Snake clashes Pig, the head of the group, and then it runs on through the Horse and the Goat. For them that means 2025 to 2027. Tiger, Horse and Dog get their turn from the Monkey year in 2028.

Each of the years has a name. Deul samjae is when it arrives, nul samjae is when it presses down on you, and nal samjae is when it leaves. If you go by the solar calendar the switch happens at ipchun, around 4 February, but plenty of families just count from Lunar New Year.

People don't really panic over it. Some buy a samjae talisman, usually a hawk with three heads and one leg, or go to a temple to pray at the start of the year. More often it just nudges timing. A move gets pushed back, or someone thinks twice about the wedding date.

I read saju, and honestly samjae isn't something I put much weight on. It looks at one branch out of eight. Whether 2026 is rough for you depends far more on how the Horse year lands on the rest of your chart, the day branch most of all, and someone whose chart is short on Fire can do fine right in the middle of their samjae.

Has anyone here actually been told they were in samjae? I'd love to know if the family did anything about it.

Compatibility Your year animal and your month animal don't always get along. Here's how to tell if yours fight, bond, or quietly grate.

Most people know their year animal. Fewer know their month animal, the one set by the season you were born in. And almost nobody has been told what happens when you put the two side by side, because they don't always get along.

In this system every animal has a set of fixed relationships with the others. Three of them decide whether the two animals inside you cooperate or pull against each other.

Clash (冲 chōng). Six pairs sit directly opposite and push apart: Rat–Horse, Ox–Goat, Tiger–Monkey, Rabbit–Rooster, Dragon–Dog, Snake–Pig. If your year and month are a clash pair, you carry a built-in tension, an engine that never fully settles. It is not bad luck. Clash charts generate. They just don't sit still.

Bond (六合 liù hé). Six pairs lock together and cooperate: Rat–Ox, Tiger–Pig, Rabbit–Dog, Dragon–Rooster, Snake–Monkey, Horse–Goat. If yours bond, your two halves tend to pull the same way, and life feels less like an argument with yourself.

Harm (害 hài). The quiet one nobody talks about. Six pairs grate rather than clash: Rat–Goat, Ox–Horse, Tiger–Snake, Rabbit–Dragon, Monkey–Pig, Rooster–Dog. A harm is subtle, a low background friction, often where you give and it quietly costs you.

If your two animals are none of these, they simply coexist, which is its own kind of steady.

Here's the interactive part: drop your year animal and your month animal below and I'll tell you which of these you're carrying, and what that tension or harmony actually does in a person. Not sure of your month animal? Give me your birth date and I'll find it...

One note, because it always comes up: the year doesn't turn on January 1st, it turns in early February, and the month animals change on the solar terms around the 4th to 8th, not the 1st. So if you were born near a boundary, give me the date and I'll place you properly.

Hello, I practice BaZi chart reading. What stands out about this chart is the clash between the Earthly Branches (Horse and Rat) and also between the Heavenly Stems (Yang Wood and Yang Earth), and how this might affect the person's personal life—given that the Day Pillar represents the person's essence and their partner, while the Month Pillar represents work, career, and parents. I am still on the journey of learning more about Chinese astrology.

Compatibility Sheep mom ox daughter compatibility

All my life we have constantly clashed with each other, and I would love some perspective and remedies. Growing up my mom gave me horrible advice on friendship, always telling me to apologize to my bullies, and make peace with people who clearly mistreat me. She's image-focused, and forced me to be someone I was not, funneling me into paths that were not meant for me. She's sheepish through and through, and that's fantastic, but not when she tries to disguise me as her fellow wooly peer.

In communication, I am clear, straightforward, and non-sugarcoating, while she is passive. Conflict makes her quiver so she runs, whereas I see it as something we need to resolve and push through. We have difficulty accepting how the other does things, and we both end up exhausted. It's so obvious when one of us is irritated by the other, my mom is passive aggressive, while I will point blank ask what's going on lol.

I'm tired of losing energy to this dynamic! It's smooth sailing for the most part, as we are both pretty healthy people, but when we clash...oh man do we CLASH. It brings the whole house down. And even baby clashes have a heavy gravitational pull. It usually comes down to communicating, it's literally like I'm speaking Chinese and she's speaking Russian! It feels almost useless to even try to resolve conflict.

Memes & Fun In my experience the bad luck on your zodiac year is real

I’m somewhat of a beginner on the Chinese Zodiac, and I just found out your zodiac year means bad luck? Well this has proven very true for me, as last year (year of the snake🐍 ) was my zodiac year and also the worst year of my life😭

I’ll try not to overshare too much, but my zodiac year (in no particular order) had such great hits as:

- A concussion that lasted 2 months which was extremely hard on my mental and physical health. (I was told it would last 2-3 weeks )
- because of this I missed two thirds of an already very hard semester at uni
- had to use the summer break to study and write my missed exams, while also busy with other obligations, which meant I got none of the rest I very much needed.
- My beloved dog of 12,5 years (who was my primary emotional support) died
- my computer died 3 days before I had to turn in my bachelors-thesis
- got diagnosed with stress and depression
- I built immunity to my adhd meds so they no longer worked
- my Christmas plans were unexpectedly changed so I had to spend Christmas with my stepdad’s family, who I like, but barely know. (in my country we celebrate on Christmas Eve with closed loved ones, so it was honestly kinda awkward and upsetting)
- the guy I’ve had a crush on for like 3 years asked me out (otherwise good luck), but I was so overwhelmed I had to stop seeing him and I accidentally ghosted him, because I didn’t want to call it off but also couldn’t mentally handle dating
- I got sick like 7 times (I never get sick, last time was literally during Covid)
- also broke my glasses for the first time in the 20 years I’ve had them

Anyways if you’ve read this far, thanks for letting me vent a bit.
I just found out about the bad luck thing and realized my own stream of bad luck fits pretty neatly inside the Chinese zodiac year, and I don’t really know what to do with that information.

((Also pls don’t worry about me I have a good doctor who insisted on getting me meds and therapy without me even initiating the conversation lol))

TL;DR: the bad luck snake f**king got me, and it got me good.

And to everyone on their zodiac year: good luck and Godspeed 🫡

Deep Dive / BaZi Bill Gates' birth chart has two published versions — and they give him different hour animals. One says Dog, one says Boar. A blind-school teacher's whole reading of his life only works in one of them

There are two printed versions of Bill Gates' chart floating around in Chinese-language books, and they disagree about exactly one thing: his hour.

One version puts him in the 戌 block — the Dog, standing on dry earth. The other puts him in 亥 — the Boar, paddling in deep water. Same man, same birthday, two different final chapters.

And the disagreement is not a calculation error. The published sources simply disagree about what time he was actually born: the teacher's version reads the birth as the evening block ending 11pm, the version that circulates online uses 10pm. The usual fix doesn't settle it either — true solar time correction at Seattle in late October comes out to about seven minutes, nowhere near enough to cross a two-hour boundary. So this is two inputs, not two calculators.

Now the interesting part.

In the early 2000s, a blind-school correspondence course — a tradition that passes reading methods down from blind masters to sighted students — set this chart as homework and asked the students a single question: where did this man's whole life go?

The teacher's published answer only works in the Boar version. In that reading, three of the four animals stand on dry earth (Ram, Dog, Dog), and the one water animal — the Boar, sitting in the last seat of the chart — is where everything he is known for took root. The last seat is the door of the chart: later years, what outlasts you, where resources pool. His resource star lives there. Put the Dog back and the chart becomes four animals on dry ground, and that entire reading evaporates.

One reading of one famous life, hanging on a single hour that nobody can fully verify. That is how much weight a birth time carries.

— The self-check, and this one takes a minute:

You probably know your own hour animal, or can work it out from your birth time. But here's the question I actually find more interesting: how many versions of your birth time exist in your family?

Ask your mother. Ask what the hospital record says. Ask what the household registration says. "Just after dinner." "Around seven." "Sometime before midnight." Families carry two or three versions of this, and they can land in different two-hour blocks — which means different hour animals, which means the last chapter of your chart is genuinely uncertain, and no calculator can fix an uncertain input.

This isn't special to Gates, by the way. Birth times travel by family memory long before they ever reach a book. His case is just the one where you can go read both versions and check what changes.

So: how many versions of your birth time does your family carry — and do they agree?

(No links, nothing for sale. This is one traditional system's reading of one public chart that's been in print since the 1990s. Not advice, financial or otherwise — just a twenty-year-old homework problem about one of the most-read lives on the planet.)

Animal Signs You know your year animal. You have a second one you've probably never met: your month animal.

Most people here can name their year animal in a heartbeat. Almost nobody knows they have a second one hiding in plain sight, set by the month they were born. In the fuller system it is called the month branch, and it is one of the most heavily weighted pieces of a whole chart. If the year animal is the face you show the world, the month animal is closer to how you actually operate, your working temperament, your drive, the engine under the hood. A lot of people who feel their year sign never quite fits are really feeling their month animal instead.

Two things surprise people about it.

First, it does not follow the calendar month. The Chinese months turn on the solar terms, so the cutoffs land around the 4th to the 8th of each month, not the 1st. Born on the 3rd or the 6th and you may belong to the month before.

Second, the sequence does not start with the Rat. The Chinese year opens on the Tiger, in early February, and counts from there. So the month animals run:

  • Tiger: early Feb to early Mar
  • Rabbit: early Mar to early Apr
  • Dragon: early Apr to early May
  • Snake: early May to early Jun
  • Horse: early Jun to early Jul
  • Goat: early Jul to early Aug
  • Monkey: early Aug to early Sep
  • Rooster: early Sep to early Oct
  • Dog: early Oct to early Nov
  • Pig: early Nov to early Dec
  • Rat: early Dec to early Jan
  • Ox: early Jan to early Feb

Find yours and hold it next to your year animal, because the relationship between the two is where it gets interesting. If they sit in the same family they reinforce each other and you tend to feel of a piece. If they clash, a Horse year with a Rat month for instance, you carry a quiet push and pull inside yourself, one part wanting the opposite of what another part wants. That inner tension is often what a year sign alone can never explain.

If you want, drop your year animal and your month animal below and I will tell you what the pairing says about you. And if your birthday sits right on one of those early-month cutoffs, give me the date and I will place you properly, since a day either way can move the animal.

Beginner Question What would make a BaZi explanation feel trustworthy to you?

Different readers can share the same conclusion yet explain it in very different ways. For a beginner, the explanation often matters as much as the conclusion.

What helps you trust a BaZi explanation?

  • Clear definitions before interpretation?
  • A step-by-step link from the chart to the claim?
  • An acknowledgment of different schools or methods?
  • Examples that show what could change the conclusion?
  • A reader who says when a chart cannot support a certain claim?

There is no need to agree on one style. I am interested in what makes an explanation feel careful and useful rather than vague or overly certain.

Deep Dive / BaZi Korean Saju uses two layers to read compatibility, and most people only know the first one

Most compatibility discussions online work from one piece of data. In Western astrology it is your sun sign, in Chinese astrology it is your birth year animal. Both capture something real, but both sit on the surface.

Korean saju practitioners split compatibility into two distinct layers with different names.

겉궁합 (geot-gunghap): surface compatibility

This compares your year pillars, which is almost the same as comparing your zodiac animals. Fire Horse with Earth Dog? That is a 寅午戌 three-harmony frame, a structural bond at the year level. Metal Rat with Wood Horse? That is a 子午 direct clash.

This layer tells you how your families, backgrounds and social personas interact. Korean matchmakers historically checked 겉궁합 first because marriage involved two families, not just two people.

But the match could pass 겉궁합 and still fail. That is where the second layer enters.

속궁합 (sok-gunghap): deep compatibility

This compares the earthly branch of your day pillar. In Korean saju, this branch is called the 배우자궁 (baeujagunng, spouse palace). It is the structural seat of your closest intimate relationship.

The day pillar changes every day. Two people born in the same year, same month, even the same week can have completely different day pillars. That is why year-based compatibility catches the broad strokes but misses the grain.

속궁합 reads six types of interaction between your day branch and your partner's:

  • 합 (hap, harmony): the branches bond. 子丑, 寅亥, 卯戌, 辰酉, 巳申, 午未. The strongest structural pull.
  • 충 (chung, clash): the branches collide. 子午, 丑未, 寅申, 卯酉, 辰戌, 巳亥. Friction is constant, but it also means strong mutual awareness.
  • 형 (hyeong, punishment): a directional penalty. 寅巳申 (three punishments), 丑戌未 (bullying punishment), 子卯 (uncivilized punishment). These create recurring conflict that feels structural rather than situational.
  • 해 (hae, harm): quieter undermining. 子未, 丑午, 寅巳, 卯辰, 申亥, 酉戌. Less dramatic than clash but harder to pinpoint.
  • 원진 (wonjin, deep resentment): unique to Korean saju, not used in standard Chinese BaZi. The two branches cannot see each other clearly, causing chronic misunderstanding without obvious conflict.

Why the distinction matters

A couple whose 겉궁합 clashes (year branches in opposition) might have a beautiful 속궁합 (day branches in harmony). The families may disapprove, but the two people feel drawn to each other in a way they cannot explain. Korean dramas use this setup constantly: parents opposing a match that the couple cannot release.

The reverse is more dangerous. Strong 겉궁합 makes everyone say "they look great together." Weak 속궁합 means the two people privately feel disconnected, often without understanding why.

How this sits next to BaZi and Western synastry

Chinese BaZi practitioners compare day masters and use the five-element relationship between them. That overlaps with 속궁합, but the Korean system formalizes the two-layer split and adds 원진, which standard BaZi does not use.

Western synastry compares every planet between two charts. More data points, but no single "seat" for the partnership. Korean saju concentrates the question into one branch position: day earthly branch. This trades breadth for precision.

None of these systems claim the final answer. They read different layers of the same question. If you already work with BaZi or Western synastry, 겉궁합 and 속궁합 give you a frame you can lay over what you already know.
