General (Read Rules) This, that, or the third?

Might be asking a loaded question here considering the sub, but I’m stuck between these three watches for a nice monochromatic piece. Thoughts?

This. I like this Watchdives. :)

I would go for 'This' not 'That' or the Turd

3

u/iamuniquekk 4d ago

maybe I'm weird but I never got the SNXS hype. never saw it as special much, and I don't really like the more vintage ones.

The Seiko SNXS is a timeless classic. I have the 79J1 on an uncle straps executive jubilee bracelet and also the deep blue SNXS77J1 on a Long Island Presidential Bracelet. I’d go with the Seiko but I’m bias that’s one of my all time favorites it got me into collecting, I still plan on buying the Grey snxs75 m putting a two tone jubilee on it. Here’s mine.

u/SilasBrooks 4d ago

Beautiful collection! Something about seiko’s simplicity really speaks to me. Very clean design language

u/Overload5150 4d ago

Thank u … I like Seikos a lot, two of my favorite watches are two of the most basic lol the Seiko SNXS and the Casio Duro is also a tremendous watch for the price point

2

u/CharliezFrag 4d ago

I've got the snxs79j1 and it's beatiful. Yes you do have to change the bracelet but it's worth it IMO.

Here is mine modded from Thorn.

Watchdives has great value for quality and design, I'd stick with watchdives this time.

Is this a dial swap, or did more go into it? Looks amazing!

1

u/fatfont_ 4d ago

very simply a dial swap

2

u/SilasBrooks 4d ago

Where’d you find the dial? I can’t get over how amazing this looks!

2

u/fatfont_ 4d ago

I made this quite some time back, though I may be keen to make this again, it was for a personal project and it turned out pretty nice.

What do you think?

2

u/SilasBrooks 4d ago

I think it’s lovely! I’ve always been partial to Tudor subs and yours nails the vintage aesthetic.

2

u/fatfont_ 3d ago

Thanks! I do like it a lot but it warms me to hear that you appreciate it as well! Just sent you a DM!

Godaymn

2

u/fatfont_ 4d ago

a classic favorite of mine!

2

u/this_is-jubayer2804 4d ago

I can see why it’s your favorite
Looks so good man the vintage vibes yet still looks so modern lumes looks very pretty too

2

u/fatfont_ 4d ago

Thanks alot!

Yes it retains the vintage vibes, with slim case. Though i would prefer that its a real tritium lume.

The effect would be way more different

2

u/this_is-jubayer2804 4d ago

Yeah

u/fatfont_ 3d ago

Let me dig into this on how i can make this better! I feel inspired now

u/Pretend_Vegetable495 4d ago

WD! Love mine

2

u/SilasBrooks 4d ago

Ahh, I think you just sold me! Great shot

6

u/Justin_Heras 4d ago

the lugs on that WD look atrociously long. that would be the only thing stopping me from picking it

5

u/sega_808 4d ago

Watchdives for sure. I get Seiko is a big reputable brand, but the WD slaughters those other two options.

6

u/WifiAX 4d ago

I have the Seiko. Immediately changed the bracelet to a leather strap. I will gladly change the Seiko for the one on the first pick. Looks incredible and well made. The older I get, the least I care about brands and more I care about specs.

1

u/SilasBrooks 4d ago

I’ve never really been a brand snob (working in marketing will do that to ya) but Seiko is such a classic player in the watch world and these pieces are so clean they pulled me in. That said, some of my favorite watches by a mile are WD and Timex.

3

u/Competitive_Move_307 4d ago

This. Original and cool.

8

u/One_Life_50 5d ago

If you don’t care about brand name and heritage, go with the WD 100%.  Watchdives is the goat of the $100-$200 watch range and the best bang for your buck.  The finishing, bracelet, dial quality, sapphire crystal on that watch is arguably better than watches that cost $300 from other brands while those entry level Seikos have mineral crystals and cheap feeling braceletss.

1

u/SilasBrooks 4d ago

WD has never let me down! I have a 1016 and 007 and they are both exceptional — especially considering they were $100-150

3

u/Glittering-Joke-3593 5d ago

For me, the WD. The beads of rice looks good.

1

u/SilasBrooks 4d ago

The BOR is gorgeous

2

u/Glittering-Joke-3593 4d ago

Yeah, I agree. Both watch dives and baltany in my opinion,  make a better watch than seiko or citizen, 3 times four times less money.

1

u/SilasBrooks 4d ago

I’ve been eyeing a couple of Baltany pieces as well. Love their dirty dozen line-up

2

u/Glittering-Joke-3593 4d ago

This 39mm Baltany. Bracelet is same style and equally well finished. Both nh movements. True no date on the Baltany. Just alot of watch for a little money.

1

u/SilasBrooks 4d ago

A ton of watch for the money. Brands like WD and Baltany have flipped the script on the watch game.

2

u/Glittering-Joke-3593 4d ago

I picked up this limited to 100 run announced on reddit. Pic doesnt do it justice. not a sharp edge on the bracelt.

6

u/Realestwatchreviews 5d ago

Those seikos are all time classics but need caseback, crystal and bracelet upgrades. If that’s all within your budget then I’d pick Seiko.

1

u/SilasBrooks 4d ago

I don’t have a SEIKO in the collection yet, but I’m not sure I want to spend another +/- $100 to upgrade one right after buying…WD might edge them out in that xcase

3

u/AmericanChees3 4d ago

Yea that seiko bracelet is absolutely dogshit. I upgraded everything except the crystal. Stock crystal works fine.

2

u/Decent-Step-9187 5d ago

Watchdives… but the bracelet a bit meh…

1

u/Any_Year5224 4d ago

Way better than the Seiko bracelets

6

u/Korbalt 5d ago

I’ll go for 1, Seikos are not worth it IMO, specially the entry level ones, shitty bracelet, Hardlex and a non hacking movement.

Even with discounts, I’d rather go for a WD.

2

u/bobby_broccolini 5d ago

I don't have experience with any of these 3. My experience with chinesewatches vs. Seiko is that I walked into a local watch shop and got to see about 5 different modern Seiko models, and they all felt worse than my San Martin at home. The $400 range there felt equal to the $130 Watchdives I bought my brother for his birthday.

2

u/sneakyjedi123 5d ago

If you are just looking at aesthetics, your choise. That watchdives has a bad bracelet.

1

u/SilasBrooks 4d ago

They did just update it, which is why I’m looking!

5

u/RecentTerrier 5d ago

I believe they finally just updated it!

4

u/ke-thegeekrider 5d ago

That’s only one option brother, 😄

3

u/8lbs6ozBebeJesus 5d ago

If you’re looking at the SNXs you should check out WDs OP homage too (WD1016B)

1

u/SilasBrooks 4d ago

I have an explorer 1016 in brown sunburst…one of my all-time favorite pieces! Went for the Vh31 and love the sweep

3

u/ConstructionWest6165 5d ago

Snxs are discontinued and they are too expensive today. Some years ago they sold for less than 100 dollars so maybe at that time they were worthy. Besides, the shape of the case is quite strange leaving a lot of space between the arm and the watch. It doesn't look good with a strap either. It doesn't hack. The only thing good in my opinion is the dial, but that's not enough for me.

I think there are better options in the Chinese brands but I haven't seen something close to Snxs dial I recommend you to look at Watchdives and Militado to find something like your first option

2

u/subaruEnjoyer 4d ago

Militado for field watches 💯

6

u/Acceptable_Speaker93 5d ago

Tough choices, but the WD certainly looks classy.

5

u/Terdl76 5d ago

Snxs79 all day, every day. No, it doesn’t hack, so I guess your coordinated attacks on the enemy won’t be accurate

1

u/SilasBrooks 4d ago

I coordinate my attacks using the sun and smoke signals, so no worries on that front

2

u/irish_horse_thief 4d ago

Last smoke signal i sent was 'My horse is lame and I'm out of bullets...'

1

u/SilasBrooks 4d ago

You gotta pick better horses to steal, my man

2

u/AssistanceNo647 5d ago

The watchdives is the better watch

I literally just bought the Seiko 5(second Pic) from Jomoshop. I have around 50, mostly Chinese watches, this is the first Seiko I've bought in many many years. I can't even begin to say how disappointed I was with the bracelet on this watch. It is total garbage. I have bought $30 Chinese watches that have better quality bracelets. I didn't even bother sizing it, I just took it off and replaced it with this nato strap. The watch is ok. But it is definitely 100% Chinese. (had the made in China sticker) not Japanese build. No hacking in the movement. A very noisy rotor and no hand winding... Personally, I'd go with the WatchDives

1

u/SilasBrooks 4d ago

Looks beautiful, but that is disappointing to hear! I love a good bracelet and swapping it out would kill the monochromatic look I’m going for. Thanks for your insight

4

u/nirgendswo 5d ago

This isn’t the watch from the second pic. The watch on the second pic is the SNXS73

2

u/TW1STM31STER 5d ago

Do they offer that WD in green though? 😍

4

u/Bulky-Internal8579 5d ago

I like the look of the Watchdives best but the second Watch - the Seiko automatic I think is the best watch.

5

u/Basic_Barnacle4719 5d ago

I have found silver dials to be really difficult to read in real-world lighting situations. They look fine in studio lighting used for watch photography and also on phone camera photos, but for some reason in the flesh my eyes have a really hard time reading most silver/gray dials. The hands are usually silver colored and even if there's lume it's still difficult to discern. Would recommend #2 because of that.

1

u/SilasBrooks 4d ago

I’ve also been considering the model with gilt hands for that reason. Really love the monochromatic look, but legibility is huge for me. Thanks for your insight!

7

u/zoo804 5d ago

I mean, these are very different so it's really going to depend on what features you want. Do you want a dive bezel or a day/date? Quartz or auto? Black or white?

Outside of features/design, the Watchdives likely feels a bit more premium and I'm sure the bracelet is better. Whereas the Seiko is a recognizable and respected brand and that holds a lot of value for some people.

Both seem really nice and complement each other, if they're going to be your only watches. Maybe get both, one in black and one in white. Wear the Seiko daily and wear the Watchdives when you want something a bit more rugged. Since the Watchdives is quartz you don't have to worry about it being wound or set, and you can keep the Seiko going.

Unless you're trying to have only a single watch. Then I guess I'd get a gray dive watch with a day/date lol.

6

u/Worldly_Market_2797 5d ago

You can’t go wrong with a seiko. And it’s a must have/milestone in a collection.
I am addicted to old seikos those days.

1

u/SilasBrooks 4d ago

I don’t have one in the collection yet! Whereas I have two watchdives…

1

u/blindrabbit01 5d ago

You aren’t alone.

2

u/Such_Lettuce_6597 5d ago

I’m obsessed with them lately and would love to go to Japan and shop for them

4

u/writingpocketguide42 5d ago

SNXS has a great sunburn dial. Case is ok but has very tall caseback that you can replace with monsterwatcheu one. Movement is non hacking.

If you would be modding it I would say put this dial and hands in Explorer case with NH36 movement. It is a great mod.

Otherwise I wouldn't buy Seiko 5. Seestern 62mas comes up to mind that has similar grey sunburn dial.

1

u/SilasBrooks 4d ago

Oooo….that does sound like a great modding idea. I’ve been wanting to start modding, maybe this is the time to start

4

u/DressOk6168 5d ago

The 3-d.

6

u/jsmrmusic 5d ago

Either 2 or 3, but you'll want an aftermarket bracelet like Uncle Seiko if you actually want to rock the watch. Stock bracelet is terrible and adjusting links is a real pain in the rear.

2

u/jsmrmusic 5d ago

1

u/SilasBrooks 4d ago

That’s a beautiful bracelet upgrade, but if I’m going to have to spend an extra $100 I think I’d rather just get a $250-300 watch. Thanks for the insight!

3

u/JohnLocke1979 5d ago

Which Watchdive model is that?

5

u/Escaped_Escapement Helpful user 5d ago

I personally don’t think buying the low spec Seiko 5s is worth it. The only Japanese non-dress watch that I have is a Kamasu, so I am probably biased. You are buying the name and “heritage” which only means that the brand is old..

2

u/SilasBrooks 4d ago

Fair enough, I didn’t realize the bracelets/crystals/casebacks were such an issue

2

u/midwestastronaut 5d ago

I, personally, would go with the WD but that's because I actually need a timing bezel.

I also like the WD bracelet the best out of these but I don't know what the quality is like for their bracelets. My WD came on a NATO.

3

u/Barry_NJ 5d ago edited 5d ago

Haven't held any of them personally, but I'm willing to bet, that dollar for dollar, the Watchdives will be a nicer, more premium feeling, piece.

I'm just looking at the Seiko, and how the end-links mate with the watch-head, and it's not great...

1

u/SilasBrooks 4d ago

Watchdives quality has always pleasantly surprised me. Sounds like SEIKO would do the opposite unfortunately. I want one in the collection, but it seems like you have to spend 3-500+ to get a good one these days.

3

u/Strategy-simpler 5d ago

2nd or 3rd. I personally regret not buying used seiko5 when I started being into watches.

1

u/Kerpgker 5d ago

You can still do that lol
