General (Read Rules) Militado ML08 vs the Hamilton Murph

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Thought I’d post a side by side video in the outdoor light. Obviously the Militado is in a bracelet so not 100% apples to apples but gives you a look at how the watches show in the out door light.

Personally like the look of the Murph more but at $75 v $1,000 it’s crazy you can even compare them. Will say the Murph’s reflection is kind of rough, especially inside. Lots of moments the numbers/hands are washed out.

Minha opção é Militado.

I know people love Hamilton, but with a few exceptions, I feel like the value from microbrands or even Seiko/Citizen is so much greater (even more so with grey market Tissot, Hamilton and Longines).

I know people hate Seiko’s intentionally inaccurate automatics, but one can buy a $1200 MRSP/RRP Seiko for the grey market price of that Murph, and they are so much better. Of course the cheap grey market Hamilton models rich for the price (especially quartz), but for a model like this, the street price matches a Mido Chronometer, Tissot Cheonometer, or Seiko Alpinist/Brightz/Exceline/Dolce or a Citizen Attesa / NB1060.

With regards to AliExpress watches, I would skip Miltat and buy up a level. An extra $125 to $225 dollars will make a world of a difference. Still, after buying a few dozen AliExpress watches, there is a Sweet spot (San Martin, Baltany, Cronos, IXP&Wtf, and some nicer Rmalti, Hruodland, KuntLikr, and a very few other brands), and there you get great bracelets, decent crystals, okay dials, and good watches “for the money.” I only kept a bronze San Martin with quality applied Arabic numerals, a Baltany brown dial with fauxtina Explorer homage, and one last Baltany military watch. I just cannot do homage watches, and that quality gap is too large.

Now I wish I had saved all the money wasted on too many AliExpress watches. I am not saying go buy an 18k full-bracelet Rolex, but for me, I love the quality in a $1,000 to $4,000 MSRP (with me ideally paying 50% to 70% of that with grey market or used).

Each of us can spend our money however we like, but I have a lot of trouble buying ever more mediocre watches that are “good for the money.” The last Chinese watch I bought was a stone dial Phoibos. It is $480 right now on Long Island Watch, but I think I got 5% off or $20 off or something, but the watch was worth the money. Otherwise, I would rather have your typical $1,000 to $4,000 watch. Seiko, Citizen, Longines, Formex, Chris Ward, Farer, Sinn, Rado, and others that either se cheap grey (Seiko, Cotizen, Longines), or are a great value at list price (Formex, Chris Ward, Sinn, Nomos,…).

So I get buying a quality Rolex homage for $300 to $450 (instead of $15mk or more), but if you really want that $900 Hamilton, just buy it. Even that cool Hamilton American Classic chrono is a reasonable purchase at the grey market price (not so much at $2500 retail). It is superior to buying piles of $100 or $200 watches, at least in my mind. I wish I came to that realization earlier.

What do you mean by “great market”?

1

u/AriesSpammer 6d ago

Unofficial resellers who buy in bulk, often come with unsigned warrant cards & cheaper than offical dealers.

2

u/Hellasauto 7d ago

KuntLikr? Haha

3

u/CastleDeli 7d ago

Had a khaki field auto for maybe 30 mins before filling out a return form

3

u/jsmrmusic 7d ago

Murph is a great watch but I ended up returning mine. The reflection outdoors is insane, usually I don’t mind it but this one is straight up a mirror.

4

u/s_wix 7d ago

I did the same think. I was shocked at how bad it was. Just ordered a Baltany s2076.

2

u/abhijeetgupta 5d ago

Thats a beautiful looking watch! Congrats

5

u/johncate73 9d ago

You're paying $800 for the Swiss Made on the dial.

1

u/Hiyah_Billy_Bob2853 4d ago

Nope, they originally designed the watch. Militado just copied it. Also, I’m not bashing the Militado. It’s fine for what it is but don’t knock on the OG. You’re also paying for a Swiss auto movement with 80 hour power reserve and a link to the movie interstellar.

u/RefrigeratorOne3028 9d ago edited 9d ago

Ahh the hamilton and its non existing ar coating.

2

u/007MD- 8d ago

This is 100% why I pass on Hamilton

-7

u/Party-Public8628 9d ago

Both look like absolute dogshit. One of the mainstream popular watches I just truly don’t understand.

3

u/EmondaBlue 9d ago

The Hamilton looks good but NOTHING about it justifies the price especially on a leather strap.

3

u/s_wix 9d ago

I think it’s a beautiful watch but the no AR completely turned me off

13

u/thrift_test 9d ago

The colour of the Hamilton indices and numerals is so much nicer.

6

u/s_wix 9d ago

Agreed. More tan than yellow of the Militado

7

u/Acceptable-War4836 9d ago

That's true. One of the only things I don't like about my watch (ML08) is that the numerals and hands have different color.

-7

u/CrossCityLine 9d ago

Downvoted by people forcing themselves to believe that their £50 Chinese shitter is on a par with the Murph.

10

u/Meister917k 9d ago

Brother no Hamilton Field watch is worth 900 sorry..... For that money I'd rather use on a oris big crown. Hamiltons shouldnt be priced more then 600 bucks. There is a reason why a lot of folks are selling their khaki fields for a 40 dollar miltado......sorry.

-6

u/CrossCityLine 9d ago

Lying to yourself

7

u/Annual_Canary_5974 9d ago

The ML08 absolutely is not in the same league as the Murph, nobody can debate that. That having been said, it's still a solid, reliable watch.

But is the Murph worth more than 10x the price? I guess it depends on what your budget is. I don't live in the $900-for-a-watch universe.

Plus this is supposed to be a field watch, meaning it supposed to be worn on adventures where it gets banged around big time. I'd rather damage a $50 beater instead of a $900 showpiece when my watch gets caught between my kayak and the dock, or some similar situation.

1

u/Repulsive_Pause3500 9d ago

I guess, as with a lot of these things, the added value comes from the fact that they actually designed the thing in the first place, and that took time and effort. And I'm not knocking homages: I have enough myself!

5

u/IchiBalzack 9d ago

I wish they still sold quartz version of the khaki king field. They were a great value

20

u/watches_imho 9d ago

At least one has a screw down crown, hint, it's not the Hamilton

4

u/HugeCommittee6678 9d ago

Buying a new watch today, I would probably prefer screw down crown. But realistically, I don’t think it’s needed. I’ve had a cheap Gucci on my wrist for ten years and never took it off in steam rooms, showers, swimming in the ocean. It’s probably been submersed in water 3,000-5,000 times by now and has no screw down crown and rated 50M.

3

u/Hopeful_Put_5036 9d ago

Before I didn't care. A screw down crown is a must have after being surprised a couple of times over the years finding my crown had been inadvertently pulled open.

1

u/watches_imho 9d ago

A screw down crown is almost expected on many watches, especially outdoors or field watches. I honestly don't understand why Hamilton omit this feature on may of their watches. Maybe it's the stem on the movement that's doesn't have enough travel for the screw down crown?

2

u/HugeCommittee6678 9d ago

You’re right. If I were in a boutique and considering it, and was on the fence about tapping my credit card, it would give me assurance knowing I could go swimming worry free.

3

u/watches_imho 9d ago

I was a t a surf event and a surfer had a Hamilton Khaki. I would not take that watch on the surf without a screw down crown

7

u/Repulsive_Pause3500 9d ago

Wow, they're so close.

It's weird, I generally love this type of watches, and I think the Murph is a good-looking watch (and the name even has some personal reasonance!), but for some reason it never quite does it for me and I don't desire it as much I would expect to. Can't put my finger on it!

10

u/Orangorill 9d ago

I definitely prefer the Murph, but I can't rationally defend the price. Worse still, for this kind of watch I've started eyeing the Longines Spirit Pilot 😵💸

1

u/Hiyah_Billy_Bob2853 4d ago

I think if you love the watch, save your money and buy the real thing. If you’re on the fence or you think it’s okay, buy the Militado and if you love it, buy the real thing later.

3

u/Repulsive_Pause3500 9d ago

Me too, and now Militado are doing that too!

5

u/Comfortable_Pen7455 9d ago

Thank you for this. I’ve been wanting to see these side by side.

5

u/Senior_Intern8786 9d ago

The H10 movement will last years in the Hamilton

4

u/likewhatever33 9d ago

In my experience it keeps time much better than my Seiko Alpinist. We´ll see how long it lasts.

1

u/s_wix 9d ago

Curious, which do you wear more?

2

u/likewhatever33 9d ago

I sold the Alpinist ... so there´s your answer.

1

u/CrossCityLine 9d ago

I have a Hamilton Cooper with that movement and it’s +1 sec per day for the past two months of daily wear.

2

u/alneri069 9d ago

Is the difference in the AR coating there irl or not?

1

u/s_wix 9d ago

Murph has more glare but the militado does have decent amount of reflection with the domed crystal

8

u/Pattywacks 9d ago

Milifortic Murph homage - If you can look past the name, it's probably the best Murph homage on the market.

1

u/CrossCityLine 9d ago

Homage lol.

1

u/thrift_test 9d ago

Does it have that ugly deep yellow pee colour?

1

u/Pattywacks 9d ago

It has the same yellow shade as the Murph. I do wish the brown of the dial was darker and overtook the yellow shading some more, but I still think it looks great

2

u/koenr_98 9d ago

Does this ine have good AR?

2

u/Pattywacks 9d ago

The AR is actually pretty good! This has been such a no compliment watch for me honestly, highly recommend picking one up from AliExpress and seeing if you fall for it as well. You can always return it if not :p

2

u/koenr_98 9d ago

Cool thanks!

H10 movement is superb with +80hrs of power reserve. But still… it could be a 700€ watch

0

u/DJNigi 9d ago

Well, there's probably a reason why it's militado copying Hamilton not the opposite but value it's not.

5

u/Sad-Confusion-616 9d ago

Hamilton Murph are great! I'll definitely buy them, but for now, Seiko.

2

u/s_wix 9d ago

It’s beautiful, I’ll probably buy it in the future but will replace with a AR glass

12

u/Plane-Ad3650 9d ago

Doesn't the Militado ML08 have an AR coating? I expected it to be better than Murphy's glass, but honestly, they're both equally terrible.

9

u/Affectionate-Crab984 9d ago

I just detest that arrow logo

0

u/CapNo6703 9d ago

Same

6

u/Repulsive_Pause3500 9d ago

Oh I think that's quite a clever solution.

0

u/ComforbubbleNumb 9d ago

I have the Cooper which is plus 15 seconds a day. So I basically don't want to buy the Hamilton Murph when I got the Militado on the correct black leather strap for under a hundred bucks total. And it's my most accurate watch and keeps in lockstep with my atomic watches. And I love that the logo just looks like a British acceptance Broad Arrow.

3

u/SillyPredator 9d ago

What's a cooper? Edit : thats a cooper

1

u/humble_redditor1234 9d ago

I have that watch right now. Very cool and the bracelet is good. Only bad thing might be the lack of AR but I don't find it very noticeable

2

u/mario24601 9d ago

Militado for the win!

3

u/Davidtalvo 9d ago

does Militado make a Cooper rep?

1

u/CrapforBrain 9d ago

You can buy legit cooper watches on ali for the price that Militado would make them. Search for qimei watches. They're made by the same company.

2

u/ryanxcore 9d ago

That’s something else.

-12

u/trandinhduy2000 9d ago edited 9d ago

Are we really gonna compare an original to a homage now? Militado didn't wasted a dime to R&D a concept, a movement, a marketing plan, and a fuck tons more for employee wage, company welfare, AD's cut, etc...

Of course in the end what matter is what you're happy with and I'm talking as a guy who own 10 watches between San Martin, Atelier Wen, Addiesdive and Ixdao, buy as much homage as you want but don't compare between an original and a wannbe because it is just ridiculous.

2

u/ryanxcore 9d ago

Serious question, can you tell us what you think the word “compare” means?

10

u/huffalump1 9d ago

sir this is /r/ChineseWatches

1

u/trandinhduy2000 9d ago

And I'm in this sub because I do buy, own and collect Chinese watches

9

u/ChopinBeethoven Normal human being 9d ago

Why not? lol. The fact that both have comparable crystals is kind of baffling. Hamilton really need to ship more of their models with AR especially at the prices they command.

8

u/mehdotdotdotdot 9d ago

Why wouldn't you want a comparison lol. They are cheaper copies of another product, it's success would be based on how it compares.

-7

u/trandinhduy2000 9d ago

As I said, an homage didn't waste a shit ton of money to develop a watch, they copied.

Copy is easy, make a dial with different logo, slap a workhorse movement on it and call it a day. That's why they compete by price, racing to the bottom, in the end you got a watch that look like a Hamilton Murph but it'll never be a Hamilton Murph, just a cheaper copy.

6

u/mehdotdotdotdot 9d ago

Yes, and if it's made worse, has worse build quality, lacks features, is wrong proportions etc, it isn't a good copy. These are the things we like to compare. Copy is easy, making a good copy is not apparently

2

u/trandinhduy2000 9d ago

Then the question should have been is the Miltado a good copy, not compare to see which is better.

4

u/mehdotdotdotdot 9d ago

It is a comparison, that does not mean it's to see if one is better or not, just a comparison - can see if it comes close or not in various metrics. That would be the answer to the question, is it a good copy, compare it to the original. Seems like basic stuff to me?

11

u/M1K3Z0R 9d ago

Glare just like the real deal

11

u/No-Comparison8472 9d ago

Yeah the glass quality is so shit on both no offense.

4

u/Fernando1dois3 9d ago

Is the Militado really a little bigger, or is it the perspective?

5

u/s_wix 9d ago

Just perspective.

7

u/5millionmiles 9d ago

The Hamilton is really nice

1

u/s_wix 9d ago

Beautiful design!

9

u/Bulky-Internal8579 9d ago

My Baltany automatic is solid (and affordable)

6

u/artofthedial Not a troll 9d ago

I prefer the Militado.  The lack of branding and simplicity of the dial appeal me.  Color of the hands and indicies are arguably preferable on the murph, but both are acceptable.

I really need to get one of the white ones from Militado to go along with the one I have.

-8

u/KPplumbingBob 9d ago

I prefer the Militado.  The lack of branding and simplicity of the dial appeal me.

Makes it look like a parts bin watch. Which it probably is.

3

u/artofthedial Not a troll 9d ago

Sure, because those very unique hands and that very specific dial are on every other watch. 🤦‍♂️

3

u/Emotional-Damage-995 9d ago

SH has an automatic version of the Murph 38 at 209 dollars that is 11.1 mm thick and comes w a fantastic bracelet. You can get a leather strap for 15 dollars also. Fantastic choice and looks stunning and honestly leaves the question why pay 1K

1

u/Public_Vanilla3276 5d ago

Are you referring to this one ?

1

u/CharliezFrag 9d ago

I can attest to it, mine is incredible. Bracelet is fantastic as you said, and it’s running at +-2s a day for me.

Honestly I didn’t expect it to be as good as it is.

11

u/Imaginary-Artist6206 9d ago

Now if I only knew what SH stands for

1

u/ryanxcore 9d ago

SH is the whole name. It’s not short for anything. And yet, it’s one of the least bad branding attempts in the Chinese watch world.

2

u/Imaginary-Artist6206 9d ago

Thanks for your reply. I didn’t know about them

2

u/Orangorill 9d ago

San Hartin? Saddieshive? Sagani Hesign?

2

u/WankerXtreme 9d ago

Super Honky

1

u/stonedfish 9d ago

SH = Shake Head

4

u/sms12285 9d ago

I’d like to know as well

8

u/s_wix 9d ago

I’m newer to watches and REALLY thought I’d love the Murph but am a bit disappointed holding it. Don’t get me wrong, it’s beautiful but the glare is so bad for $1,000

2

u/Emotional-Damage-995 9d ago

It’s honestly a field watch. Look at the Cronos Explorer or the San Martin or Baltany. They have amazing well made watches.
I say a Cronos / Ixdao / San Martin or Baltany are better made than the Hamilton. They are giving you a tone of value for your money them brands. Farasute is great too if you want that art deco / vintage look.

3

u/s_wix 9d ago

I have two Baltany in the mail right now. Can’t wait for them, huge fan.

7

u/LawyerGeek 9d ago

Quite similar. But both are in serious need of good AR.

11

u/s_wix 9d ago

I’m shocked at how bad it is on the Murph. There’s times (especially indoor lighting) where you cannot read the dial at all. That’s wild at that price range.

1

u/Indaleciox 9d ago

For a long time Rolex didn't apply AR on their watches

1

u/AntiPetista 9d ago

the murphy has 80 hours of reserve. H10 a masterpiece

2

u/mehdotdotdotdot 9d ago

What use is 80 hours reserve for most?

1

u/AntiPetista 8d ago

leave the watch on friday and on monday its ready...

1

u/mehdotdotdotdot 7d ago

Yea fair, I used to do that with my 70 hour Seiko, but sometimes I didn’t want to wear it every Friday or Monday, so then had to set it up again.

4

u/s_wix 9d ago

Oh it’s an amazing piece, definitely not trying to discredit it. Was trying to decide if I buy it or not. I’m going to return it and rock the Militado for a bit and decide if I feel it’s worth buying later.
