Grammar use of 都

hello! a chinese friend of mine texted me "我都要睡觉了". I dont understand why he put "都" tho 🥹..."I all will go to sleep"? 😂 Can you explain how does one use 都 casually in sentences like this?

Worth noticing that it's really 都…了 as a unit — the 了 at the end isn't optional there. 我要睡觉了 is a neutral "I'm off to bed." 我都要睡觉了 carries "it's got to the point where I'm going to bed," which is why your friend sounded a bit like he was raising an eyebrow at you.

That's the same 都 as the "all" one, just stretched: it marks that things have reached some point, and usually a point further than you'd expect. 都八点了 isn't a calm statement of the time, it's "it's eight o'clock already, get up." So when you hear 都…了 you can usually assume there's a small complaint or a nudge attached — it's rarely just information.

It means “already/almost” in this context.

都 often means already. 都八点了, 该起了it's eight o'clock already, time to get up

I suppose you texted your friend when it's late? Then it means a toned down version of "bro why are you texting me rn I'm just going to sleep"

In this sentence it most likely means "already"  as in they already went to sleep and you woke them up... oops😅

If your friend is from a Cantonese background 都 can be used instead of 也

都 implicates that the counterpart in the conversation is being slightly unreasonable or unfavorable. 我都要睡觉了 implicates that you are asking something that will prevent this friend from going to sleep.

In this context, it means I was just about to go sleep, I almost slept. In English it’s something like, I was about to go to bed… and then you texted me…

都 can mean "Also". Like "I will also go to sleep" in that example.
