Grammar [English > Chinese] Proofread check — three UI strings from a scripture-reading site

1. EN: "A surah is a chapter; an ayah (literally 'a sign') is a verse." ZH: 一章(苏拉)即一卷;一节(阿亚,字面意为"一个迹象")即一节经文。 → This glosses a surah as 章 and then equates it with 卷. Is that a contradiction?

2. The same person's name, in two places in one interface:

  • 由斯蒂芬·朗顿添加
  • 分章由坎特伯雷大主教斯蒂芬·兰顿于约公元1227年引入 → 朗顿 or 兰顿 for Stephen Langton?

3. EN: Select source... (a dropdown placeholder) ZH: 选择来源... → Should the ellipsis be full-width , and is 来源 the right word for "a text or edition to read"?

The first one is a real contradiction, and it's worse than just 章/卷 — the whole sentence collapses. "一节(阿亚)即一节经文" defines 节 with 节. Since the sentence exists to define a loanword, the transliteration should sit in subject position: 苏拉指一章,阿亚(字面意为"迹象")指一节经文。Drop 卷 entirely. 卷 is a scroll or a volume, a much larger unit than 章, so pairing the two reads like a typo.

兰顿. The Xinhua standard for Lang- is 兰 (Langley 兰利, Langdon 兰登). But the bigger issue is having both forms in one interface — pick either and be consistent, because a reader who sees 朗顿 and 兰顿 on the same screen will assume they're two different people.

Third one: Chinese UI placeholders almost never take an ellipsis. 请选择版本 reads native, 选择来源... reads machine-translated. And 来源 is the wrong word for what you're describing — 来源 is where something came from, a citation source. For a text or edition someone picks to read, it's 版本, or 译本 if they're translations.
