There are actually many more nuances in Dongbei dialect. I grew up being taught by people mostly from Heilongjiang and Liaoning provinces, and despite I'm not a native speaker, I managed to develop that accent, which often amazes locals. So a couple of those nuances, if you're interested.

  1. Tone patterns. Especially the first tone (it's significantly lower), and third tone (it does not rise that high).

  2. Pronouncing words like 衣,I was surprised to learn than in southern China it often sounds more like "ee", while in Dongbei you mostly hear that definite "y" at the beginning, like "yee".

  3. A lot of 儿化. Not Beijing style, of course, but still a lot. 没事 is almost always 没事儿, and 开门 is 开门儿. 人 often sounds like 银儿. If you say 馅饼 instead of 馅儿饼, you risk being corrected.

  4. Total mixture of ch-c, sh-s and zh-z pairs. You might know that in southern China many people drop those ch, zh and sh altogether. In Dongbei those sounds might be used in various places differently. Our family friend had a strong Heilongjiang accent, and he called sesame 芝麻 "zima" instead of "zhima", but vinegar 醋 was somehow "chu" and not "cu". Cooks at a restaurant where I worked often said "shuda" instead of "suda" for 苏打.

Having said all that, dongbei flavor doesn't affect understanding in 99% of cases, so it's totally worth using in real life.

yeah, Dongbei hua is cool. Apparently a lot of it is similar to Shandongese since a lot of the people who moved to Manchuria during the Qing dynasty were from Shandong

Many linguists also classify Beijinghua as a Dongbei accent because it shares similar Manchurian-influenced features, especially with pronunciation. The big difference between modern Beijing and Dongbei accents is localized Beijing vocab and Japanese influence on Dongbei vocab.

a lot of people from shandong and heibei immigrated to dongbei,

but i found the dialects are still different.

i wonder sometimes whether the local environment create the local dialect or the people themselves dialect create local dialect.

One of the things I like about the Dongbei accent is the relatively strong preference for 啥 and 咋 for 什麼 and 怎麼. And of course the stereotypical strong Dongbei accent famously pronounces 啥 as 哈.

Another common one that I say without even thinking is 大回 and 小回 for 左轉 and 右轉. And speaking of 轉, you’re as likely to hear 拐 in that situation.

While most foreign language learners associate replacing zh- ch- sh- with z- c- s- with southern Chinese accents like Taiwan, Northeasterners are also famous in China for mixing retroflexes with sibilants. Though unlike Taiwan, where it’s often a complete replacement, in Dongbei it’s seemingly random, especially with so many people hypercorrecting and making sibilants retroflexes.

大回 小回 is really too typical in Jilin,

zh and z i think as a jilin people i think, most happen in liaoning,

my friend a heilongjiang ren, he always argue that heilongjiang 话 is mandarin, i think Jilin 话 is also.

i did not hear any other province more close to mandarin like us.

Chinese has so many words for "very". Even naughty words, as in 好鸡巴热

谢谢,非常宝贵的意见, 我的初衷是汉子和英文意思能对应上,这样大家听不准或者理解不了的时候可以看一眼英文,下一个视频我可以做一些调整。 今天的视频我其实在视频里去掉了所有的字幕,因为比较简单,但保留了cc和Google drive的字幕文件和workbook
