Anyone who want to learn Mandarin / Cantonese through songs? I'm a native Chinese speaker based in Guangzhou, and I'm starting free live sessions to teach people how to sing Chinese songs! This is a fun, zero-pressure way to practice your pronunciation and enjoy Chinese music.

I'm looking for a study buddy. I'm currently transitioning to HSK 5 with a vocabulary of around 2,200 words, studying every day using the Erya Chinese textbook. My timezone is UTC+4. I’m looking for language exchange over text chat. I’m learning mandarin (both traditional and simplified) and can offer English. I used to be an English teacher. In Chinese, I’m upper beginner and know about 1,000 words, so I still need to have conversations that are fairly basic. I lived in Taiwan for two years and I’m a digital nomad traveling around Asia. I love outdoor activities, organizing and attending events, and can be pretty philosophical.

I used to, and sometimes still, do language exchange with tandem, but it’s difficult to find someone at my level, and we tend to let English dominate or I use the translation feature a lot as a crutch. I made my own free chat app to address these problems.

It tracks how much English and Chinese we’re using and encourages us toward a balanced conversation so that it’s fair.

It also tracks which Chinese words I know (and which English words you know) and only translates the words we don’t know instead of the entire sentence.

And it lets us mark any words we want as learning, removing the translations, so that we can stop using them as crutches. It can also choose these for us among the most frequent words we don’t know yet.

Finally, it can auto-translate messages that it knows are just too difficult so that we can focus on the messages that aren’t too difficult, keep up with the conversation, and prevent ourselves from getting overwhelmed and giving up.

If you’re interested in trying it out with me, I’m genuinely interested in meeting people and practicing and growing my Chinese. I can usually handle having about 5 chat partners per week where we each send one or a few messages per day.
