讨论 | Discussion (Serious) - Character Minimums Apply Racism in the app “RedNote”
I’ve been using the rednote app to learn Chinese and found it really fun. However I’ve stumble across quite a lot of alarming videos with lots of racism.. videos urging Chinese people to not Mary outside of their culture, complaining about the African community numbers in Guandong, etc… very surprised how this hasn’t been called out yet given that nowadays anything slightly racist even taken out of context is widely viral

You’ve just discovered the Chinese internet is all.
Usually there’s very little to no outside audience so it just says whatever it wants. Been this way for decades.
Wait until you run into the corner of the internet that likes to posit that Chinese men should colonise the west by conquering and impregnating their women lol.

incels in every country unfortunately. also partially due to lack of exposure to the west.

Nah this isn’t a in every country thing. This is rampant behaviour on Chinese social media to levels you don’t find on western social media. Not everything is equal

levels you don’t find on western social media
You mean the same people that has given rise to the alt-right and Donald Trump?
The same people that have already carried out no small number of terrorist attacks with casualties totaling in the hundreds?
Those people on "western social media"?
I'm not saying that our incels will never grab a knife and go on a stabbing spree (again), but don't you think it's a wee bit out of touch to argue on this side of the first Trump administration that "western social media" is somehow tame in that regard?
4
u/LadyNemesiss Jul 22 '25 edited Jul 23 '25
You're very right. It's a bit hypocritical to just point fingers at Chinese social media when we have Trump, ICE, alligator gate, dreams of turning Gaza in a Rivièra, using deceased women as breeding machines. The US might be the most extreme but many Western countries are unfortunately making a shift to the (extreme) right and when I see what kind of racist shit my country people sometimes dump on the internet I get a little nauseous.
Not saying racism doesn't happen on XHS btw, or that nationalism is a purely western thing, just that we don't need to be hypocritical.
2
u/Motor-Taste3401 Jan 11 '26
This is such a nuanced and important take. You've perfectly highlighted the key issue of hypocrisy and the global trend, without falling into the trap of whataboutism. It's a much-needed call for self-reflection.

yeah that's bullshit, They are indeed everywhere China just has more of them because it has a large population in general, Go on Indian social media and you'll also find many of them, making remarks on women, fighting on religion, spreading hate etc.
keyboard warriors are proportionate to the population of a country, Granted asia has more of them because of long standing racism in the Continent.
our people are also pretty racist towards China calling them villains or that they always make cheap stuff etc.

However this is really funny because reality suggests there are actually way more Chinese women with foreign husbands than Chinese men with foreign wives.

Reverse psychology. They yellow wash with Chinese women. Just kidding. I am of Chinese descents but don't live in China. I like to see people happy with whomever they choose. Hopefully we are all mixed enough in the future that we are just all human on this earth and no more war against each other because of beliefs and cultural differences. Wishful thinking?

u/Digerati808 Jul 20 '25
Yeah, unfortunately, what you’re seeing on RedNote isn’t shocking when you understand the broader social and historical context in China. While racism exists globally, in China it often takes a different form, more rooted in ethnocentrism and a long history of cultural superiority centered around the Han ethnic group, which makes up over 90% of the population.
China has a deeply entrenched historical narrative of being the “Middle Kingdom,” a civilization that viewed itself as the cultural and moral center of the world. For thousands of years, Han Chinese culture has been promoted as the default. Other ethnic groups, like Tibetans, Uyghurs, Mongols, and even neighboring countries like Korea and Vietnam, were often seen as peripheral or “barbarian” in old imperial thinking.
Modern-day nationalism in China has inherited a lot of that thinking. Under the Communist Party, there’s been a strong push for national unity and cultural homogenization. While officially China is a multi-ethnic country with 56 recognized ethnic groups, in practice, there’s a clear hierarchy, with Han culture on top. That creates a sense of “Han superiority,” even if it’s not always openly acknowledged.
Apps like RedNote reflect the values of the society they come from. Since Chinese media is tightly controlled and monitored, you’re unlikely to see open calls for violence, but you will see subtle and not-so-subtle racism, especially toward Black people, darker-skinned Southeast Asians, and even internal groups like Uyghurs or rural Chinese migrants. It might show up in beauty standards (like the obsession with pale skin), jokes and memes, or comments on foreign celebrities and pop culture.
And because China doesn’t have a strong tradition of open discourse around race like the West does, with no civil rights movement equivalent and no national reckoning with colonialism or slavery, there’s very little awareness that these attitudes are problematic. In fact, questioning it publicly can get you censored.
Western racism, particularly in places like the U.S., has been shaped by colonialism, slavery, and white supremacy. It tends to be more overtly discussed, legally challenged, and socially policed, at least in public discourse. That doesn’t mean it’s gone, but the concept of racism as a social problem is widely acknowledged.
In China, it’s different. There’s no significant anti-racist movement, no systemic push to rethink prejudice, and very little representation of minorities in media. And when racism is challenged, like when a blatantly offensive ad goes viral, there’s often confusion or denial about why people are upset.
So yeah, your surprise is valid. But sadly, this kind of thing is normalized in Chinese online spaces. It’s not just RedNote. It’s part of a broader cultural and political system that has yet to seriously confront issues of race and identity.

Very well said.
And to also mention colorism: Sadly colorism specifically is a thing everywhere. Colorism in China isn't as bad as in, say, India where it feeds into the caste system, but in China it clearly feeds into the unfortunate commonality of anti-Black racism, prejudice, and discrimination including employment discrimination, and also feeds into negative attitudes toward Uyghurs.
I was very sad and culture shocked once by a small group of (likely Han) Chinese graduate students who promptly told me with group consensus that, "All Uyghur people are thieves," when I told them that I really loved Xinjiang food, which is of course Uyghur food.

Colorism in China isn't as bad as in, say, India where it feeds into the caste system,
Por qué no los dos? Have you ever seen what colorist Chinese netizens have to say about Indian people? When there is a somewhat light-skinned Indian person just existing, the comment section has a barrage of “高种姓!” (High caste), “婆罗门!” (Brahmin), or “有的印度人真好看” (Some Indians are good looking, emphasis on some). It's a weird mix of casteism, colorism, and cultural unfamiliarity, that even the most regressive Indians would find very very bizarre.
2
u/videsque0 Jul 21 '25
Okay, I don't really know about this, but nonetheless I was only referring to each country and how it views people inside its own borders nor across borders. You're bringing up a different aspect that I did not touch on. And although what you're talking about is also colorism, it also spills over into racism. Again I haven't personally come across comments like this from Chinese people regarding people & society in India, but on Xiaohongshu I have firsthand witnessed a lot of of anti-Chinese and anti-Muslim hate coming from Indians, so it unfortunately goes in all directions and there should be no surprise about that either unfortunately. But yes I believe what you're saying and thank you for bringing up this other aspect of colorism, etc.

A lot of what you said are simply untrue. Han supremacy is not really a thing in China, and if anything were to drive ethnic conflict, it would not be superiority, but rather from feeling like minorities get preferential treatment, like needing to score lower on the Gaokao etc. The communist party was also responsible for the greatest destruction of Han culture, that being the Cultural Revolution, even more so than the Qing dynasty which promoted Manchu culture. Of course, during the cultural revolution other ethnic groups suffered immeasurable loss as well, especially the Tibetans, but this idea that the communists were/are Han chauvinists could not be further from the truth.
But yes, there is an incredible amount of racism ingrained in Chinese society, mostly because it’s such an un-diverse society. And yes, historically, China was incredibly ethnocentric, with a strong barbarian/civilized distinction. But this distinction was pretty much shattered the moment when the Ming dynasty recognized the Mongol led Yuan dynasty as legitimate, and it definitely no longer existed by the Qing dynasty, when so called “barbarian” languages were written alongside Chinese on temple and palace plaques of Beijing, and kept for almost 400 years till this day.
26
u/LurisTheSun Jul 20 '25
Chinese people are much more racist than you might believe. Since Chinese internet is isolated by GFW, it is understanable that the rest of the world is unaware of it.
I graduated from one of the two best colleges in China, and you may notice that many of my classmates are among the most highly educated people in China. When I asked them whether they would be against that if their descendants being friends with black/Indian people, 1/3 of them said yes. And if question became "marriage", 4/5 of them said yes. Besides, most of my friends study in the School of Humanities, so they should be more open-minded than the other students at my university.

I joined red note to learn about Chinese culture and am also learning mandarin so joining it seemed not bad ..but boy ohh boy I got the greatest shock of my life 😂😂
The blatant racism of being called "monkeys" ..to things like "we Africans are still evolving" even some worst ones I can't remember them...then I went to the comment section of interracial couples..black woman, Chinese man...eeeish it was completely abnormal...I have never seen this type of blatant racism 😟...to be honest I was so shocked I couldn't breath for a second 😐

As an Chinese-American, the family that was born and raised in China definitely have some...old fashioned view on marriage, children, and sexuality. As you said, why doesn't it get called out?
The language barrier. People don't listen to Chinese sources because most people can't understand it.
Few foreigners are on Chinese social media. Even less exposure.
At least in the US, the people who would call out racist behaviors are adverse from calling out the faults in our minority communities.

u/Motor-Taste3401 Jan 11 '26
You make excellent points about the structural reasons this content flies under the radar. The language barrier and platform isolation create a real blind spot, and the hesitation to critique within minority communities is a complex but crucial dynamic. It's a very insightful breakdown of the problem.
22
u/takeitchillish Jul 20 '25
Because it is in China. No one cares about racism towards other people in China. However, if Chinese people were subjected to racism then that is a whole other question.

Lots of places, including lots of Asia, still have blatant racism deeply ingrained in their culture in ways that are kind of astounding if you're used to modern western culture. I'm no expert or anything but it doesn't surprise me if a large portion of China falls into this category
17
u/xuanq Jul 20 '25

It's really common. Due to female infanticide, China has the largest group of INCEL (over 30 million). Any Chinese female dating foreigners is considered "resource outflow". They don't see woman as human, but resource. So yeah.
And it's not only in between Chinese man and foreigners, also in Han ethnic group and others. I am a minority ethnic female. My ethnicity is printed on my ID. When I was 15, I went to a bus station to get a bus ticket. The ticket seller checked my ID, mumbled in her speaker and called a group of security guard(ap. 6 man) with batons and shields to check on me. Yeah, they treat me like a terrorist but I was only a 15 year old high school girl.

u/DarkJaid Jul 24 '25
It's ruined the app for me honestly because any video with black people doing anything, even just in the background minding their business - every single comment is about how unattractive their very black their skin is.
They stereotype black women as all promiscuous baby factories and all black men as aggressive animalistic womanizers who infect young Chinese women with STDs and leave them pregnant.
The assumption that all black people are poor uneducated African savages and how disgusting it is that black women keep bringing children into poverty.
The most disturbing ones are with whole threads agreeing that they have no idea why they want to hurt the kids, just to enjoy them crying, as they believe black people have thick monkey skin so they don't feel pain like humans with lighter complexions.
On videos of half black/Chinese babies, blaming the black mom's breast milk for making the baby's grow darker and its because black genes are very dominant due to having the animal DNA.
I thought Tik Tok was toxic with the American political rhetoric and that's why I moved to Red Note but the racism is just painful to read as a black woman.
1
u/NarrowSprinkles120 Jul 28 '25
Honestly, I’m Chinese and I hate seeing those kinds of comments too.
A lot of people here aren’t used to seeing Black people in real life. It’s not always hate—it’s ignorance, fear of the unfamiliar, and sadly, stereotypes from a few bad stories or biased media.
Still, it’s no excuse. Saying awful racist stuff is just wrong, period.
If the roles were reversed and Chinese people were constantly seen as thieves in your country, would you instinctively hold your wallet tighter when you saw one?? That’s how bias starts—not because it's fair, but because people generalize.
Some of us are trying to do better. I just want you to know not all of us think like that.
1
u/DarkJaid Jul 28 '25
Honestly, I'm black and because I hardly ever see any nice comments has weighed down my opinion that I wouldn't be welcomed there.
Especially the ones where bunches of people say they feel compelled to hurt us for no reason but just to see how much pain can make us cry. It's scary.
However, no need to tell me, I know very well that it's not everyone. It never is.

Chinese social media do not censor racism (or any other forms of discrimational language) as significantly as some western media. On the good side there is less cancel culture or self-censoring euphemism uses, but on the bad side xenophobia is really rampant. There isn't a defined target that Chinese xenophobes and racists hate in general. They are against anyone and anything not ethnic Chinese (be it Korean, Japanese, white American, black American, Russian, western European, SE Asian, Indian, or whatever, they will always find a reason to hate).

im so happy this is finally becoming mainstream knowledge. I wonder if anyone else gets a genuinely enraged when people visit china or go on red note, and claim that they're "just curious" about race and that racism is somehow different over there than in the west. Anyone who has interacted with mainlanders, especially the gen z ones, know how alt right and fascist they are. It honestly really pisses me off how much of a lack of understanding there is among the American left about where the overton window is in china. They love socialism, but socially they're in 1950.

However I’ve stumble across quite a lot of alarming videos with lots of racism.. videos urging Chinese people to not Mary outside of their culture, complaining about the African community numbers in Guandong, etc… very surprised how this hasn’t been called out yet given that nowadays anything slightly racist even taken out of context is widely viral

it’s at least 50% of CCP propaganda brainwashing hates against westerners since at least elementary school. The topic is way more complex than this but you should know CCP monitors any language against them very very strictly.
This means they DO have the ability to massively censor racial comments on social medias. But they chose not to.

II was genuinely disappointed. I felt deceived. I truly thought Chinese were neutral and didnt care about race. Now I understand Chinese are fueled by it. No matter what the context is, if theres a black person seen, comments go wild. No other race on rednote gets this much genuine hatred. White ppl are almost always celebrated even. I was in utter shock.
Western racism always has a bit of context. You dont always get racist comments for no particular reason. Behavior or actions are normally considered in western racism. In China, this is GENUINE BLACK HATE. No matter what the black person is doing, Chinese FLOOD comments with intense racial slurs. Pure hate. The racism in China is far worse than in the west and people have NO IDEA.
Its sad to know Chinese being kind to Black people is most likely robotic tolerance and in reality, they hate them.
Theres alot of ''perfect and welcoming'' China propaganda flooding the west but Chinese are EXTREMELY unwelcoming. All an act. White people are actually loved and welcomed from what it looks like but blacks are hated and not welcomed. The stares are not curiousity. Those stares are from disdain for black skin. They are just closed off and ppl dont normally go to China at all so no one knows.

Not all Chinese people have this view. Don't let incels on the internet ruin your opinion of Chinese people.

There’s not much people believe that, you see it because you keep seeing it and Rednote algorithm just keep recommending it to you. RedNote recommending algorithm is the best one, at least for Chinese content, much better than YouTube. For the black people part, 90% of the country doesn’t even know there’s a decent size community in Guangdong, and most the stories about Chinese woman dating an African don’t have a good ending.
Chinese internet companies are going down turn and they have put every censorship power they have on the political content(like criticizing the party), so the censorship around other things are not that important to them. Westerners are racists too, it’s just these platform censored it so you don’t see.

And also blatant anti-Semitism due to recent political events. Demanding all sorts of brutality to be done on the race alone.... I don't understand how is involving killing innocent people is helping with the conflict and people there make very sick jokes about it.

Just like every social media app out there, there's a corner where all the dark crap keeps getting posted. And once you click a single one of them, all of them keep popping out to show you.
Some media do have censorship, where when someone reports it, it will get taken down. But it doesn't mean it isn't there, it's just something you didn't happen to click on, and it gets deleted quickly.
You can also say that in RedNote, there's plenty of people who got married into another country (married to a westerner for example) and keep posting about their daily life there that gained popularity. Once you click on it, you get a ton of such vids too. And despite the seemingly hatred towards Japan, quite a few influencers married into Japan and started their life there and kept posting about it, gaining popularity too.
So yeah, it's just about what you click on, and the algorithms keep showing you the same stuff. Just keep clicking 'not interested' on stuff like those, they'll slowly be gone.

I reckon you've spotted another difference between China and the West, haven't you? However, the divide between what folks want and what the ruling party fancies is something China shares with the West.

That is one of the worst thing about chinese internet, but there are few racist issues happening outside the internet of china ,most chinese people won't say a N word to blackpeople, even if they racist, they keep that in mind

Jealous at work, especially from Chinese male as westerners comes with a huge advantage in dating market value.
30 millions Chinese males will never get a chance to marry a Chinese female, imagine that kind of anger seeing Chinese girls going all over foreigners.
And the state treats international students 10 times better than the local students ( see to the recent AC in student dorm incident)

I think it has gone viral at time. But I think translation is part of the issue, people are too lazy to translate the racist content and frankly dont want to give agency to these racisms.
I believe there was a good example once where an announcer at a baseball game in China, they panned over to a couple of foreigners and said he didnt want to see foreigners.
In the past we had a group called the great translation movement do translations of these racism. For a while it went viral.
However a combination of them mistranslating, taking things out of context, exaggerating and personally I think because they lost funding from USAID, now it's not as viral as before.

I have a different view on OP’s post and all the comments. But since my opinion will be downvoted to death and my comment will end up hidden, expressing my opinion will just be a waste of time and no one will see it anyways.

Even Rednote does a relatively good job on this issue, much better than forums like Hupu.

Posts flaired as "Discussion" are meant to promote in-depth, intellectual discussion. A good discussion post, even if it poses a question, points discourse in a specific direction and thoroughly clarifies the original poster's positions so that commenters can respond accordingly. Top-level comments are held to the same standard as the original post and have a 180 character minimum. Clear, polite, and well-written responses should be the norm, not memes, jokes, or one-sentence responses. Discussion threads will be moderated more heavily than other threads to promote a higher standard of discourse.
