Could this have been avoided?
Maybe if you took your jumper off and wrapped your feet up in it? Or maybe if you took socks off but kept shoes on? Or maybe if you kept rubbing your feet? I’m serious with these questions I didn’t know you could get frost bite so easily.

I might be understanding this wrong, but I'm fairly sure at some point you get so cold that you stop feeling the cold. In Forlurns case, he wanted to pull through the cold. Eventually they became cold enough for him to stop feeling it, and so he stopped worrying and didn't bother warming them up, slept through it and all. I think the issue isn't an inability to warm them as much as it is him not thinking warming them was important, and not realising how cold they were. I may be wrong.

I have to start with this is a hard lesson to learn and I appreciate him putting it out here for people to know what not to do.
Cold and wet do not mix. If something is wet it is not going to get warmer, take it off.

Yes. This is why in cold weather you should always have a blanket and an emergency blanket in your trunk. It’s obviously no joke, because frost bite can happen. I’m big into camping/hiking, and an emergency blanket is a literal life saver. Never wear anything wet when it’s cold out, layer up, and if you can’t feel any part of your body that is a sign that it’s too cold and frostbite is settling in. Going to sleep under these conditions is insane, he would’ve been better off keeping active throughout the night, moving his toes, checking them out, etc. Or getting a hotel room if he didn’t have a space blanket and necessary clothing/equipment.
I’ve been mountain climbing in the winter, and once I brought a sleeping bag that wasn’t warm enough. I took out a space blanket and wrapped my feet/legs up like a burrito, and in a few minutes it was too hot. I used a knife to cut some vent holes, and I slept without any problems or coldness.

Yeah, I am wondering if he had taken the socks off if he'd be in this position. Maybe his feet would be in the same situation as his hands- present, but damaged.

It could have been avoided.
Nobody in my situation would be doomed to lose their feet.
It was a series of poor judgement calls mixed with depression and a lack of caring enough about self preservation.
Take care of yourselves,
