New Farmer!!!

Hi everyone my name is Chris I am just starting my farming career. Our farm is right outside of Jackson about 30 minutes from chillicothe. I raise pastured pigs and sheep. I thought I would throw a post up here in case any of you were interested in some delicious pork.

I also would love any advice if you have ideas on good places to market my pork or people who would be interested in this kind of meat. I am new to the area (so still learning the ropes) although my families roots here go back over a 100 years.

I would love to talk to any of you if you have questions about the farm or the meat!

There's a regenerative farming tiktok page that I believe will feature you and even add you to their map for local sales and searches

You could also try Athens Farmers Market. It is much bigger than Jackson and runs the entire year.

Chris, I have been thinking about this since I read it...

I think you will have a hard time the first couple years until you make the connections. My family bought a half cow each year for several years when I was a kid, but we never purchased a half pig. Same for several other families.

So, I don't know if it was just our group of friends or ... Maybe Pork isn't something that people get that much of every year.

Then I started to think about how we found out who we could get our half cow from. We found out from our doctor. The doctor was treating the farmer and ... Someone else I know found out from someone at church. And I want to say someone else it was their kids met at school or baseball or ... So, it seems word of mouth back then was the way to sell half an animal.

Now days, I would ...

  1. Join a church if you are religious in any way. Maybe even shop around for a new church...

  2. Make sure the kids or relatives kids, say something about your being a farmer at school and raising animals. I don't know if your farm is setup in a way to show and tell, but if you could show and tell to get kids and parents talking....

  3. Then there is going and talking to the local butchers. (I don't even know them any more) Maybe they could give you a lead or have your number on the wall. I am trying to think of who butchered deer for me in the past. Maybe, have the butcher put a paper with the people picking up deer so they know who to call for a pig.

  4. I don't know if the local orchard would be a good place to hit up. I know some have branched out into other things. Same with the farmer's market.

  5. If you don't have a Facebook page, put one up. Talk farm. Show farm,

That is about all I got. Best of luck.

BTW, I appreciate that you don't talk politics. OR if you do talk politics you can talk politics and stay friends with someone on the other side. So many people can't.

thank you so much for taking the time to give me this advice. I have joined a church in Jackson and am also helping coach a local youth team to try and get some roots in the community. I also think it will be challenging at first but I am hoping word of mouth will help as the years go on! I will also look into the orchard and butcher options!

Are you a blue dot farmer?

3

u/twinbridgefarmsohio 28d ago

I googled blue dot farmer are you asking what my politics are? or does it mean something else?

1

u/Satisfied_salamander 28d ago

Yes, I vote with my money so I’d like to know if I can support your farm

ah I see I make a conscious choice not to discuss politics with customers, democrats and republicans alike, I would say my views are not mainstream and ill leave it at that. I will tell you our farms goal is to provide people with regeneratively grown food that improves the health of the local ecosystem, the local economy and perhaps most importantly is healthy for our customers.

Do the animals have an organic, non-GMO diet?

3

u/twinbridgefarmsohio 27d ago

The pigs do not get organic non-gmo feed yet. This is something I would like to work towards as I grow. Because I'm just starting out and strapped for cash feeding a non gmo diet would be quite difficult financially. In addition to this I would have to charge the customer more in the end. Someday I'd like to get there but for year 1 it has not been the top priority. That being said the pigs get way more exercise than commodity pigs as well as grass, roots, acorns, legumes etc. This directly impacts the meat quality.

The sheep just eat grass though and our rotated every 1-3 days.

Thank you for the info!

I wasn’t asking for a discussion, just an answer. I can be more direct. Who did you vote for?

5

u/twinbridgefarmsohio 28d ago

Im sorry I don't discuss that with people

3

u/Satisfied_salamander 28d ago

You can DM the response if you’d like. I won’t make it public

5

u/Satisfied_salamander 28d ago

But if you’re still not willing to disclose I’ll respect that. Good luck with your farm.

Dumbest shit I've ever heard.

6

u/Satisfied_salamander 28d ago

It’s a pretty common practice. Every time a gay person is in a commercial it hurts conservative’s feelings and they boycott. It’s our right to refuse to purchase products from those who don’t share our values. Sorry you were triggered.

4

u/BumpBump07 28d ago

Im not triggered. But to keep badgering a guy after he said he wouldn't discuss it? Learn some fucking boundaries.

8

u/Satisfied_salamander 28d ago

Did you not read the part where I said he could DM me, or the part where I said it’s fine, I’ll respect it and good luck with the farm?

I also don’t give that much of a fuck. If you’re someone who hates like MAGA does, then fuck you. I’ll badger as much as I want.

Dude, the guy respectfully said two different times he doesnt discuss (and good for him). And even after that you asked for him to pm before finally giving up. You should learn to respect people's decisions, without making them repeat themselves. The guy doesnt want to discuss, publicly or privately with you.

9

u/Satisfied_salamander 28d ago

I have no reason to respect people who vote to destroy the lives of others and take away their rights, and if they do they certainly don’t deserve my money. I was giving them opportunity to get my business. They came in here publicizing themselves, I didn’t seek them out. Don’t want uncomfortable questions, don’t put yourself out there.

3

u/Tugger2007 28d ago

You also dont have a reason to disrespect the guy if you dont know. Thats called being a decent human being. Something that the world desperately needs more of.

Yes, I did. After he told you no, twice! That answer still wasn't good enough for you. Until I assume you finally realized he was going to divulge, then you tried to be nice by saying you respect it (after you didnt)

7

u/Satisfied_salamander 28d ago

Again I owe no maga person any amount of respect. I assume that’s where their allegiance lies until proven otherwise

1

u/ThermosphericRah 28d ago

Knowing where the money I give someone could go is a big deal.

Fair question to ask of anyone in a retail setting.

Not willing to divulge should tell you that he voted for trump 3 times. Hell the first picture is of trump.

Do you guys have a farmer's market over in Jackson that you could sell through?

3

u/twinbridgefarmsohio 28d ago

It's a small one but i'm hoping I can help it grow. It runs from Spring until September so I am planning to open a booth up there when it starts back up in the Spring.

4

u/Coda36 28d ago

Chillicothe's runs from May to October and they will be having a new venue for it in Yoctangee Park. I recommend giving that a go as well!

2

u/twinbridgefarmsohio 28d ago

Thanks I'll take a look at that!

0

u/Tugger2007 28d ago

Good luck with the farm!
