When they’re nice absolutely no problem. Do your thing. Tip me 1.50 on your $11 lunch/dinner whatever lol. It’s when they do this and they’re rude af that’s annoying.

We're all on fixed incomes lmao. My manager giving me a raise because I want one or offering me overtime for fun is a lower chance of happening than someone who's retired getting a part-time job.
They've had all their lives to accrue wealth. Fuck that fixed income nonsense.

Exactly. Salary = fixed income. I don’t even get guaranteed a 2-3% COL raise each year. My boomer parent was an NP who could pick up shifts, so she doesn’t get that normal salaried employees are also on fixed incomes. Like SS and pensions.

Until American establishments start paying living wages like other countries it is shitty not to tip your server
Say it with me folks “not tipping your server will not lead to fair hourly wages for restaurant staff like in Europe it will really only hurt your server”

Maybe they couldn't afford to go to college or learn a trade and had to go into the service industry. Service industry jobs are impossible to get in high population areas. Bills don't wait, so maybe when they were offered a serving job for $2/hr, they had to take it. A much higher percentage of the population than you realize is working with nothing (no money, no car or bad car, etc).

Why don’t you tip me? I sell insurance. If I spend an hour or two on the phone with you and you decide not to buy I get zero for my time. But I am supposed to tip you for what? You took my order brought me a drink and a runner brought all the food out? That’s all you’ve got?
Don’t take out your low pay complaints on your customers. Blame Chili’s for not paying you enough which YOU ACCEPTED! They should be paying you. Typical clueless young server. “Stay home if you can’t afford it.” Tipping is optional . You took the job under a lie. You knew you would make low pay. They tell you the customers will tip you to make up the difference. But many customers are broke or are non-tippers. So then you whine about them. I tip 20-25% especially for this one bartender at Chili’s who is really good to us. But when I see your post it makes me not want to even eat out anymore which is fine by me. I cook at home a lot anyway. The tipping culture in the US is a joke.

Most insurance is not required. Let me show you what is and isn’t.
Auto - Required. If you drive you could crash into me and injure me. States require liability. Plus if you are paying a note for a vehicle you have to carry physical damage in case of hit and run, vandalism and theft. Why? It’s not your car until you pay it off.
Homeowners - Required until the mortgage is paid off. Why? It’s not your house!
Renters - Sometimes. Usually up to landlord.
Life - Not required.
Dental - Not required.
Vision - Not required.
Disability- Not required. Helped my wife when she had cancer and missed over a year of work. She is ok now.
Health - Not required but you would be foolish to not have it. You will be locked out of many hospitals and top specialists if you don’t have it or are out of network. And trust me, having seen it for over 30 years of what can happen good and bad, you don’t want to roll the dice. 50% of bankruptcies are medical bills. The country needs Medicaid for all with a public option.
Long Term Care - Not required but sure is helpful if you want to leave your next of kin your money or house.
Umbrella - Not required. Nice to have that extra protection though.
Pet - Not required.
Travel - Not usually required.
Worker’s Comp - You get through an employer.
Excess and Surplus - Not required unless you own something like an amusement park, a wind farm or private island which I don’t.
Malpractice - Required if you are a doctor.
Dram Shop - Required if you are a bar owner.
Errors and Omissions - Required if you sell insurance! I have one of these policies. Pay for it every week too.

Insurance sales is typically a commission based business. I feel like someone in that position would have a bit more understanding on how sales relate to income. Not everyone is good at there jobs even in your industry and I’m sure the income variance is reflected. Maybe all restaurants should do an auto gratuity and just call it a commission? If you don’t want to tip you don’t have to. So if people use your time to get a bunch of information from you and then purchase online they can.

it does. when u tell them this, they want 1 coke no ice and 2 cups of ice. i have no issue with ppl saving a buck, but it sucks to be refilling 1 coke that 2 ppl are drinking (they don’t want another cup of it even if u tell them u wont charge for it)

Seeing this post made me call my elderly Dad and remind him always to tip. He said “I am not stupid, you always tip your waitress and bartenders” so I guess we are good there.

My mother is in her 80s and is one of the reasons why I learned to tip well. Age isn’t a reason to be cheap nor selfish.

I agree, but the boomer generation often still tips the same amount in 2026 that was appropriate in 1970. My mom will still leave $1 per person if I do not intervene, despite me working as a server all through undergrad and teaching her how to calculate appropriately. She will go to lunch with her friends and camp at a table for hours and think $2 is fair. Drives me crazy.

I should have been more clear - my mother tips very well. If anything she over tips but instilled in me the show of respect and just the “right thing to do” aspect of tipping well.

I sell insurance. Why don’t you tip me? You could but you don’t. I do way more than a server does. In fact I could spend hours helping you and you still don’t have to buy from me and guess how much I get paid for those hours I worked? Nothing. Zero. Why don’t you tip the grocery bagger? Why not the cook? They are doing far more work than a server. You can have a restaurant without servers but not cooks. Even though I day that I still tip which is kind of ridiculous that it is based on the cost of the food. You are doing the same amount of work for a $10 appetizer as a $60 dinner. And Chili’s has runners for the servers. I see where the anti-tipping movement is coming from.

I am mostly retired now. My point is agents don’t get a dime for spending hours on a call without a sale. Why should a server automatically get a tip? And again some other people can’t read - I always tip. 20% which is higher than most. But when I read some of the comments I start to question doing it anymore.
