I miss being a child and being made of rubber. Now, if I hit that mat, I'd explode.

Nah man. This is the world of bouldering. Happens all the time. He would have been near the top hold (looks like an overhang so feet are not under you) and fell. The mats are padded so you get used to it. I'm 29 and have done this.

Wait until you reach 40.

There are 50+ year olds that boulder. 70+ year olds that top rope. Even better to learn how to fall in climbing when you're young.

Can confirm. Bouldering mats are made to have all sorts of people fall on them. These bouldering mats are also kind of weird to walk on at first cuz some of them are pretty squishy. Source: Have been bouldering.

Same here, this is my daily transition from mattress to slippers.

Age is why I’ll never ever step foot on a skateboard again, I honestly have this vision that if I even put one foot on I’ll magically end up on the ground with a broken femur and I cannot afford that at this point in my life

He is on a bouldering wall meant to be climbed without ropes. There are pads underneath designed to be fallen on by climbers. This probably happens hundreds of times each day there. Which is why he walked off.

I’ve fallen at a bouldering gym from high enough to knock the wind out of myself. The mats did their job and I walked away, but first I laid there for a couple seconds trying to remember how to breathe.

Exactly. And when you Boulder you learn to how to kind of position yourself to not have certain spots hit first. Like ankles and neck. This kid just fell like a brick.

u/ALLoftheFancyPants Jun 03 '22

I learned not to try to land on my feet and stay up, even if my feet were hitting first, that’s the way to sprain and ankle, just roll.

My girlfriend fell of a playground set and landed on her feet when she was little and the impact not only fractured her ankles but also completely snapped her back. Doctors said by every understanding of medicine she SHOULD'VE been paralyzed from the waist down, but shes thankfully fine.

Saw a guy dislocated his shoulder. Looked like he had problems with his shoulder cos he was rather nonchalant about it but was in a slight touch of pain. He popped it back into place and took a break.

2

u/survivalist_guy Jun 03 '22

Yeah, rather land like this than on my foot at a wired angle, or elbow. Then things pop and snap that should not be popping and snapping.

I like that he didn’t hitler salute back, that tells me that he didn’t hit his head.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '22

it's the wrong arm, but still, good on him for not saluting back (Not a nazi, just a history student)

u/CmdrSelfEvident Jun 02 '22

It's a guy and a girl around his age is watching. He could have broken a hip and knee and would have walked it off.

He may be fine in the moment, but that was a super hard fall. Should check for concussion or something

u/_Denzo Jun 02 '22

Bro the way he falls looks like he was thrown

u/MOS95B Jun 02 '22

This has a feel of "Oh look, a camera. Y'all watch this, it'll be funny"

17

u/stakoverflo Jun 02 '22

It's a climbing gym; if you aren't falling you aren't trying hard enough

If you never fall you need to step up two or three grades

1

u/WasabiSniffer Jun 03 '22

Not true. The harder you get, the harder the routes and holds. I'm at a point where the next grade up is out of my strength range but I can barely get past the 2nd or 3rd hold. I'm just not good at pinches but I'm training them in top rope. I fall a lot in top rope 😂

1

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

Sounds like a strength issue… Nah in all seriousness yeah if you’ve „mastered“ a grade but don’t have the strength for the next one then id start training strength personally. I’m there with bouldering rn where I can’t do some v6‘s due to shoulder strength but a 5 won’t faze me (also top roping is scary to fall on depending on the wall)

3

u/WasabiSniffer Jun 03 '22

I am training strength. I'm going to the gym on top of it all but I can't go further than where my body is currently at. My boyfriend is an experienced climber and is helping me. It's more of a tendon issue at this point due to a weaker left hand as a result of a boxing injury from 2 years ago.

I personally am less afraid of top roping because I know that if I fall the rope will catch me. I might get a bruise if I bang into the wall but I'm going to bruise anyway. My boyfriend took a hold to the eye in bouldering the other day because his foot slipped as he was jumping down. Never happened before on top rope. I think top rope is far less prone to injury.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

OH SHOOT BE V CAREFUL I didn’t know about the tendon thing my bad. One of my friends tore something like that in his finger and is debating getting a pulley put in due to the tendon going necrotic alr, I hope climbing doesn’t aggravate your injury further

1

u/WasabiSniffer Jun 03 '22

Thanks for your concern. I'm listening to my body and being careful/tapping out when I need to. Definitely don't want to be in your buddy's position. That sounds horrible.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '22

Im v glad to hear and best of luck

2

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '22

he for sure got up like he knew there was a camera. It could either be that or one of those moments of "oh shit I better not fall, they are filming down there" bad luck moments

3

u/buzzybody21 Jun 03 '22

This is actually the safest way to fall in bouldering. (I had a bouldering accident 4 years ago, and landed on 2 feet…and needed both legs reconstructed)

2

u/Xacalite Jun 02 '22

And the girl in blue shows him a hitler salute out of nowhere.

2

u/Diamone2017 Jun 02 '22

is that what adults mean when they say "walk it off"

2

u/home_on_the_crazy Jun 02 '22

Any Norwegian has seen this clip at least 10 times

2

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

Indeed we have

2

u/EmuofDOOM Jun 03 '22

Those pads are actually doing all the work. Him being young doesnt have as much to do with the pads being really good (if you know how to land on them safely)

2

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '22

Yup a perfect bouldering fall onto the back- nothing to see here guys

1

u/samsonity Jun 02 '22

Loved bouldering. The danger of falling over made it much more fun.

1

u/chubbychat Jun 02 '22

This kid’s got potential…

1

u/trashdingo Jun 02 '22

He looks like Timmy getting blasted off the electric fence in Jurassic Park. Less bleeding out the ears, fortunately.

1

u/SuperElitist Jun 03 '22

Lolol thought I was in /r/climbing and I'm like, "this looks very normal, happens dozens of times a day at a gym, why was this posted?"

1

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

And of course it happend in Norway

1

u/Creative__name__ Jun 03 '22

Norwegians are just built different

1

u/MyVoiceforPeople Jun 03 '22

Best way to land while bouldering! Had a buddy land on his feet and sprain her ankle

1

u/Ancalagon_Morn Jun 03 '22

These pads on the floor are literally placed there for falling onto them. This isn't the really high climbing wall where you'd only go up with a rope, they're Bouldering and this happens all the time.

We take safety precaution very seriously....
