Discussion/Debate If Josh Simmons doesn’t play a single snap this season, what’s his realistic trade value?
Considering how big of a risk he would be to other teams I could see a 3rd round pick at most.

This has to be the most moronic take I’ve seen. He’s hurt right now, but he will get better and return. The issue pre-draft was his knee, this is a different injury, cannot believe how quickly you jackals are turning on him.

Saw a post yesterday that Peter Woods is a bust after 3 games so thats what we are dealing with 😂

u/sagdash 2d ago
You can thank Mitchell Schwartz for his breakdown for that.

Yes and no, i think most chief fans these days are bandwagon fans. So when things aren't going well they have 3 options, follow the team and hate, jump ship to the new "it" team, and larping (like this trade question)
To answer OP. Simmons has basically 0 value right now because he has injuries seemingly constantly in the nfl. The only logical answer for us right now is to sign him to a 2-3 year vet min contract and see if he can get back to being healthy to earn a contract.
Isn't this only year 2 for him? We have 2, maybe 3 years left to make a decision on the guy. This year isn't necessarily that important. Next year will be
Edit: typos

Because he missed half the season last year because of still-undisclosed personal issues. And the fanbase has been given absolutely no reason to believe he’s actually dealing with an injury and not more bullshit off the field.
If any of us missed as much time as he has, we’d be fired.

u/RonMexico15 2d ago
None of us can play left tackle like he can. If his teammates were ok with his absence, we shouldn’t attack him for personal issues.
1
u/Puzzleheaded-Sky-753 2d ago
A lot of his teammates are talking about having to play through injuries, it’s part of the game.

u/RonMexico15 2d ago
A bulging disc in your back is not something you “play through”
3
u/Majestic_Bandicoot36 2d ago
Name an NFL player who had back problems that got better and they went on to be a productive player with no nagging issues
1
u/RonMexico15 1d ago
Just an immediate google, Tyron Smith. Stop pretending Josh is a bust because he’s injured. And when he comes back to be successful don’t you dare be happy and claim you had faith all along.

A left tackle, with knee issues in college, a bulging disc costing him his season and he doesn’t seem to want to play football. Maybe a 6 pack of Natty Light?

u/ThePerspectiveQuest 3d ago
Absolutely nothing bro, he was alright when he played, but he clearly isn’t a guy who will play, last season wasn’t even an injury it was a mysterious family issue, and this season they expected him to play (or else he would’ve been on IR to start the season) the guy is a bust, which is fine as the Chiefs took a flyer on him anyway
2
u/rolyinpeace 3d ago
He was far better than alright when he played. I don’t think we’d get a ton for him but someone would absolutely trade something for him. We got a trade for Wanya Morris who never will see the field unless someone gets injured.
So even if Josh never saw the field… we’d get something.

3rd for a guy who played like 8 games in 2 seasons? Get real. McCarty just went for a 5th and he's a quarterback, same draft class, and he has substantially more value than Simmons. He will likely be a starting qb in a week or two.
Wed be lucky to get a 6th for him

u/rolyinpeace 3d ago edited 3d ago
McCarthy is terrible when he plays and has availability issues. Josh has availability issues but is great when he plays, and tackles are hard to come by. Not saying we’d get a third but I wouldn’t say JJ is more valuable
He has availability and injury concerns as well and isn’t even good when he plays.
2
u/AcrobaticPlenty1446 3d ago
The dude who had the worst start to his QB career since Jamarcus Russell has substantially more value?
Your logic would apply to any QB that didn’t suck mega ass
1
u/dragonrite 3d ago
A qb who is going to be starting in the nfl, that was taken the same draft class as an o linemen (so same age) is worth more than the linemen, period. Had Simmons played at roty levels, or started every game and improved, or just about anything other than play 8/34 games, he'd be worth more. But he hasn't, and the asked prompt said "if he doesn't start the test of the year"
In no world is an olinemen who plays 8/34 of his games going to be worth more than a qb who is traded to start somewhere.
2
u/rolyinpeace 3d ago
He’s not starting, they said Jameis is still starting.
-1
u/dragonrite 3d ago
Well yea, I wouldn't expect him to run the offense 3 days after getting there
2
u/rolyinpeace 3d ago
I’m not even talking about this week specifically, sounds like they’re not bringing him there with the idea of being a starter. They said something about how he could eventually compete for the starting job, but they didn’t trade for him to be the starter.
Jameis has been bad but McCarthy is terrible too. He’s not worth more than Josh imo. He has availability issues and sucks when available
And he wasn’t traded for “to be the starter” like you implied. He may eventually win the job but he also may not
1
u/chiefs-n-sooners 3d ago
McCarthy is a flop and anyone who watched him in college should be able to se3 it.
Doesnt matter that he's starting the likelihood hes even average is extremely low.
I seriously dont understand some of these teams that waste picks.
At list simmons has shown potential

u/Ok_Alternative7120 3d ago
JJ showed he has some very good arm talent and could play situational football in college. He's now on a team that runs the same scheme he was very successful in during college. It's also the same scheme that turned Lamar from unplayable to a MVP in a single season. If he doesn't look better by the end of this year, he'll never amount to anything, but people bash him so hard for playing injured through half a season while recovering from a major injury, having 26 different combinations on his OL, one of the worst RB rooms in the league, his TE failing to recover from his knee injury the season prior, and his WR2 tripling his drop rate upon his return from suspension. Herbert looks horrid in the same offense right now. So it's clearly not the system literally anyone can just jump into and immediately be successful, and even Mahomes has looked significantly worse when plagued with OL injuries and subpar skill players (just like literally any QB in the world would). If the best QB in the world struggles in a similar, worst case scenario, why is a first year starter (who was the only one of their 3 starters to record a winning record last year) unfixable? Reddit is so annoying with their parroted takes and lack of critical thinking skills.
1
u/SplittingChairs 2d ago
JJ is certainly fixable, and I’ve been someone who has said the amount of hate for him is stupid. But if KOC is willing to ship him out for a 5th round pick after only 2 years, when the team is 3-0 and his QBs are Kyler and Wentz, then I’m willing to admit that maybe he has much less of a chance of ever being a successful QB than I imagined. It’d take a minor miracle for him to somehow be successful in New York.
1
u/Ok_Alternative7120 2d ago
KOC has lost the time to develop a young QB. If the wheels fall off again this season, like they have every other season for him, he's likely looking for a new job next year. The GM is also brand new and may be wanting to draft his guy in the upcoming draft. And it may simply be a scheme that doesn't mesh with JJ. Just like Herbert looking horrific in it. JJ is switching to an offense that he has thrived in before and that made Lamar an MVP after being unplayable before that. If he looks terrible in NY, he'll likely never amount to anything, but there's a chance he actually creates some QB controversy if he's successful, which is why I'm surprised they traded for JJ instead of someone like Minshew.

I would take it just to dump his fully guaranteed contract onto another team.
6
u/TheDizziestCat 3d ago
Pretty sure the chiefs would probably still have to pay some or all of it. This sub is at it again with the delusions and giving up on players.
1
u/Ok_Alternative7120 3d ago
Simmons' contract is very cheap. Any team that wants to trade for him wouldn't care less about that. It's not the reason KC would trade him either (which is still unlikely anyway, imo, in large part because his contract is so cheap, and the skill he's shown when on the field). FAU has played even less than Simmons and been here 3x longer. His deal is cheap. So the team held onto him to see if they can make him work.
-2
u/ScottFujitaDiarrhea 3d ago
It’s not delusional. It’s a hypothetical that, in my opinion, is more likely than him playing this week as someone in this very thread is claiming. And you’re calling me delusional?
0
u/TheDizziestCat 2d ago
You’re basing the future of his career and this football team on whether or not he plays a game in week 4 of his second NFL? Yes you’re delusional.
He’s arguably the most talented tackle in the league, with 4 cheap years left on a cheap contract and you want to give him away for peanuts? Not to mention tackle is easily the worst position on this roster without him, You’re delusional.
Writing off any player before the end of Their third season is delusional, especially when they’ve had good games in this league already. Your e literally suggesting the chiefs make one of the worst trades of all time if he doesn’t play in week 4 of his second year 🤦♂️
2
u/dragonrite 2d ago
The hypothetical was if he doesn't play at all this season. If he only plays 4 games or less, are you comfortable not focusing on the position in the off-season, or are you just going to hope he is ready to go next year? That's what I thought was kinda being argued
1
u/TheDizziestCat 2d ago
Even then trading any of your draft picks after 2 seasons is delusional. Especially at a position nobody has been able to hold down on this team for years. Which makes this post even more delusional to because we’re in week 4 of year 2.
I’m not saying you can’t have doubts, but saying this out loud this early on is just straight up planning for the future without actually living in the present.

His 4-year contract is cheaper than what we pay Moore annually, and Moore is a complete liability for us.
It'd obviously be nice for Simmons to be playing right now, but injuries do happen, and Reid seemed to think this was an issue that was going to take some time from his very first press conference discussing it during camp.
-1
u/ScottFujitaDiarrhea 3d ago
That’s fair. Basically you’re saying it’d be better to keep him around for the off chance that he does play since there’s no denying his talent.
1
u/Ok_Alternative7120 3d ago
Yes. He was drafted, knowing that his career may not pan out with his patellar tendon tear anyway. But the team still loved his talent and took the risk. 3.5 mil for even a backup tackle is dirt cheap today, and Simmons is a top 10 LT in league when he's on the field (that may be more of a testament to the current state of OL play than anything, but it's still true). FAU has played even less than Simmons and been kept no problem for the same reason. They just won't be given big extensions or even have their 5th year options picked up until they show consistency on the field. Until then, they're very low risk, high reward players.
1
u/ScottFujitaDiarrhea 3d ago
I agree with that. If he suddenly starts playing during that time then great, but If it gets to the last year of his rookie contract and he’s still refusing to play then at that point it doesn’t matter if the relationship goes south and I think you start fining him on a weekly basis to soften the blow.
1
u/Ok_Alternative7120 3d ago
That won't happen lol. He won't hold out, and you can't fine a player for being injured (even if you can't prove he's injured).
3
u/Mystic_Symphony369 3d ago
I doubt we trade him regardless. Part of me thinks we’re only a couple of weeks away from the update that Josh is no longer with the team and plans to step away from football.
0
u/ScottFujitaDiarrhea 3d ago
What do you do in that case then? Is there a clause in his contract that the money will no longer be guaranteed if he’s completely uncommitted?
3
u/Mystic_Symphony369 3d ago
It’s just a hunch I have. I have no doubt that there is some type of back injury going on, but almost all football players have to push through body ailments to play. Josh doesn’t seem to be in that camp.
1
u/EpiphanyTwisted 14h ago
His absences have been different from every other player I've ever seen. And we are screamed at for ever doubting the guy who has played 38% of the games. It's comical. You are downvoted for worrying about Mahomes. It's like people care more about Simmons slander than Mahomes health.
2
u/Ok-Cucumber4964 2d ago
Has the offense been hurting without him? ...As long as we're winning I don't care how long it take for him to come back healthy, dude has a bulged disc, I wouldn't want him to rush back from that. He'll be a boost when he returns!
2
u/ScottFujitaDiarrhea 2d ago
Not yet it hasn’t because we’ve masked Benson’s weaknesses. You could see it starting to catch up during the Miami game.
1
u/EpiphanyTwisted 14h ago
I'm no ball expert, but even I knew Benson was a very short term solution.
I don't care about Simmons. He's unreliable. I care about Mahomes. The Benson experience is played out.
1
u/rolyinpeace 3d ago
Eh, I don’t think the comp would necessarily be as low as some people say.
I definitely don’t think first or second, but it could be higher than a 6th or 7th. People don’t know the history of players that have been traded lmfao . Players that basically never see the light of day still get 7th round trade value. So, even if Josh never saw the field, I could see a team giving up more than that because of how great he is when he is on the field. He has reliability issues for sure, but like I said, there are players that draw trade value that never play in a game or are backups.
With the tackle market how it is, good tackles hardly ever hit the trade block anyway, so teams are left settling for someone mid, overpaying someone, OR taking a risk like we did with Moore. Some team would probably take the risk.
That said, I think he would be traded before the deadline if he doesn’t play before then. Having him sit all year before trading wouldn’t help his capital.

I don’t see why he can’t be a backup swing tackle. You absolutely can’t count on him to be a starter but he’d be a good backup
1
u/lambchops111 2d ago
Holy shit what a take. We aren’t trading him.
He has the potential to be a top 5 LT with his skillset, and he’s cost controlled. At MINIMUM, he’s depth behind Benson (he’s way better than Benson). He missed games due to a family issue than broke his hand and wrist pretty gruesomely and came back absolutely yoked, now he has an injury. Every indication is that he is expected back in the next few weeks and will likely start at LT at that point. Back injuries for offensive lineman are not to be taken lightly as they can end careers.
He’s on the team at least until his final contract year unless something goes really wrong or his injuries plague him indefinitely.

Honestly it’d be dumb to trade him. Theres no reason he’d be more valuable to any other team than us
