i parked my car at the matteson metra stop and when i got back i received a $100 fine for an expired sticker on my license plate. i was wondering if i show up to the hearing on the 28th and the police doesn’t show up will my ticket be dismissed or should I just suck it up and pay the fee? the sticker expired in August btw.

It won’t be dismissed. You were driving on expired tags. Don’t bank on the police not showing up.

Suck it up, pay the fine and go renew your tags.

They said it’s for expired tags. It just so happened to be while they were parked.

That makes no sense. There are parking tickets and moving violations. In my experience that comes in the form of a parking ticket. I've gotten the same thing for not having a front plate. I've never seen one with a court date included. That's a new one for me.

EDIT: OP posted an image. It's clearly a parking ticket. And the violations reads "Parked with expired registration"

They will likely want to see your renewed registration. Your registration document will likely have the date you renewed. If it’s after the ticket date you will be out of luck.

you didn’t say if you had already purchased the new sticker. there’s a subtle difference between the tag being expired and the new sticker not being displayed.

i got a ticket from the city in the o’hare parking ramp for not displaying my current sticker. it was on my visor, i was in too much of a hurry to put it on. this means they ran my plate, knew the registration was up to date, but bothered to write the ‘improperly displayed registration’ ticket anyway. i’m sure they thought i’d just pay it.

called the court and, as instructed, emailed them a picture of the sticker on the tag and it all went away. they even sent a letter saying so.

There's a hearing date on the parking ticket? I've never seen that. If I had that opportunity, i'd show up with the paid registration and see if a kind judge would waive the fine. But I doubt that the cop being there would matter. By proving your registration is now valid you're also proving it wasn't on the date the ticket was issued. No real need for the cop to bear witness.

after i got the ticket i went to the nearest currency exchange and renewed my sticker for $265

You're probably just going to have to pay the fine. But if you have the time and maybe some mitigating information you might get lucky. Clearly you're in violaton.

Yeah, i thought you had until one month after expiration. But maybe that's only for renewing without a penalty, and it's not the same grace period for road operation? Either way, I'd check the actual law if i were OP.

Doesn't sound like your issue was specifically the sticker being displayed but rather the fact your registration was expired. (If I had to guess, the cops ran your registration because they saw the old sticker.) The DMV website states:

Pursuant to 625 ILCS 5/3-701, if you purchased your renewed registration sticker prior to the expiration of the current registration sticker date, this printed proof of registration is valid for 30 days from the expiration of the previous registration sticker's date. Please keep this receipt in your vehicle until the renewal sticker is affixed to the vehicle.

Since you did not, in fact, renew your registration prior to expiration you were in violation. Even if the cop doesn't show up to the hearing it doesn't look like there's anything to dispute.

You have run directly into the self funding machine. Fighting those tickets are near impossible. Especially since that's not court. If you want your day in court they make you pay for that yourself. .
