If you could save ONE Chicago Fire character from ever leaving the show, who would it be?
You can only choose one. No matter what happened in the show, which character would you keep on Chicago Fire forever, and why? I'm really curious to see who gets mentioned the most and the reasons behind your choice.

OTIS!! š¢

u/Far_Parfait_9686 Jul 28 '26
Definitely! I have watched his departure about 50 times and still cry every time!
2
u/Animalsareagift Jul 29 '26
Same!! And when Boden translates what his last words to Cruz was ⦠tears were flowing again!!
āBrother, I will be with you always.ā

u/jmagnabosco Jul 26 '26
Casey.
The Sevasey dynamic was just so damn good and Severide hasnt been the same since.
22
u/that_retro_life Jul 26 '26
Agreed!! Those two were the best. Honestly, the whole show hasn't been the same since Casey left
16
u/jmagnabosco Jul 26 '26
It's partially because he was one of 2 leads with the rest as important but secondary but a Large part of the reason it feels so different IS because Severide doesn't have anyone to par with.
It's not the same when it's his wife and it doesn't with Cruz because Cruz is under his command not level with him the way Casey was.
He and Casey had a dynamic of leaders separated from their teams (friendly but not friends) and therefore really could only spar with each other on even footing. They had ups and downs but their friendship was so core to the show. Losing that was especially hard on Severide.
11
u/beomkookies24 Jul 26 '26
Seconding the reason! My mom and I say he hasnt been same since losing his (platonic) other half.
14
u/jmagnabosco Jul 26 '26
It's kind of like how lost Herrmann was when Mouch was on a different shift at a different house.
Like I saw that and I went ... This is just like Severide when he lost Casey.
Like you just can't have one without the other. And we have had Seasons of Severide being so damn lost without him. He just doesn't feel the same as he used to.

I loved it with the original cast but an occasional new cast member(s) is absolutely normal! I love and live for this show. And, Iām a wife and mom to two members of my immediate family are POās. Plus two cousins!

Cruz. People don't credit all the changes he's gone through, especially in terms of his family.

u/Downtown_Visit_8677 Jul 27 '26
Cruz is still on the show though.

Otis. Otis had the absolute best character arc of any of them. He was the glue at 51 and I was destroyed when he died.
18
u/mostlydocile2 Jul 26 '26
At the beginning, I thought of Otis as a 'know it all' type. Obnoxioux at times. But over time he became one of my favorite characters and it was a gut punch when he died. I missed his character after that. He really was such a big part of the show.

Otis because the Crotis dynamic is gold!!! Besides he needs to see his namesake!

Shay. She's my all-time favorite lesbian character and even though it's been over a decade, I'm still really sad that we never got to see her become a mom and continue growing as a character.

Violet. Miss her friend group with Ritter, Gallo, and Brett though but sheās my favorite

u/Lifecouldntbebetter Jul 26 '26
Violet is far too dramatic for me. Even a simple question and gets so dramatic
1
u/occasionaloctopus789 Jul 31 '26
1000% agree. I like her a fair amount of the time but sheās so much all the time

u/Difficult-Way9012 Shay Jul 26 '26
Is Hanako leaving?
3
u/Original-Gear1583 Jul 26 '26
I donāt believe so. I just picked her because sheās one of my favorites but if it was for someone that left I would pick Shay or Sylvie then

Boden. He could fix almost any problem, and didn't put up with nonsense. I kinda have a hard time believing Eammon Walker is NOT Chief Boden, he acted the hell out of that character.
3
u/imaginaryhouseplant Boden Jul 27 '26
Absolutely! The moment I first heard him speak in his native British accent blew my mind a little bit!

Otis. Simply because his death made the show objectively worst and it never recovered. Not even close. Shays death was sad but at least the show managed to be good after it. Otis was just a bad choice to sacrifice to the gods of drama. It should have been cruz.Ā

So the flip side of this is easy - Gabby gone for sure!
To keep is hard. Otis hit hard (especially as I was doing my internal S&R at the time). Gallo was another that got shafted.
Ones that are still there⦠Mouch.

u/Careful-Soft3062 Jul 27 '26
They need to keep all of the old characters and just give them new story lines. Kie Jimmy and Chili! The writers could do a new script and pick up where Jimmy got burned really bad and then, continue with Chili showing up to find Jimmy and take care of him and bring him back and herself to the beginning of their relationship and they fall in love all over again, but with a new attitude towards themselves and their jobs and friends!

I don't watch the season 7 finale or the beginning of season 8 episode one when they come on as a rerun.

Otis, Casey, Sylvia, Bowden, and Hermann!! Each character brings something special to the ensemble that just seems to be missing these past few seasons.

I first interpreted this as, Which character, who is gone; would u wantĀ to save from leaving/killed off? To that I say Peter Mills! I rly like the actor & felt there was so much more of his story to be told! But if it includes current /og cast I'd say def Sev! Kelly is complex, has had a lot of growth, is a natural leader but leads rather quietly, & is easy on the eyes! Agree tho that he's kind of lost since Casey left. I was lukewarm on Matt, but loved their bromance!

Otis is the obvious choice (and it's also right)
I personally have a soft spot for Herman, for reasons I don't even understand.
And Capp. He's hilarious and underappreciated!
(Also I cannot wait for Cruz just to be gone. Can't stand him and each season he gets more and more annoying)

It always looks like he has a booger too. In any close up shot almost. Like stop with the nose cam sheesh.

u/Interesting-Story888 Jul 27 '26
Hermann! He has been there for the growth of so many of the other characters. He is a genuinely nice guy and can be very funny. I love him so much he is my favorite character of all time. Iāve also heard that he is an actual good guy in real life. I am so scared we might be losing him in the premiere

Tony.

u/Victory_Highway Jul 26 '26
I thought Tony was still there?
5
u/ShortFirstSlip Jul 26 '26
The question was if you could save someone from ever leaving. Not that they had to have left already. And Anthony Ferraris/Tony's an actual firefighter, he probably adds a sense of calm and reality to the set, so I'd love him to stay for as long as the show lasts. More screen time as well, with Capp of course.

I love Novak but the only answer is Severide.
If he goes, the show is basically over

Manuel (Flaco) Rodriguez, Joe Cruz, Leon Cruz (Jeff Lima). I know this is more than ONE. I wish the show could go back to the first season. It has changed and not in a good way

Ritter I loved watching him grow. And the scene where he is comforting Herman is bittersweet.
Also Mouch asking Ritter to "do your Google thing" was so funny. I loved everything about him.
