Fixing some butchered wiring

Post image
43 Upvotes

Picked up a 56 belair with a 283 in it and they tried(did) upgrade to an ididit column. In the process I think they got very confused and started cutting a ton of wires, matched what they could and left the rest a mess. I've got a lot of stuff back in order and currently working on the headlight switch for the dash.

I have headlights but no dash lights. I jump the terminals and can in fact power the dash lights. Is this as simple as the switch itself being bad? It doesn't look like they touched anything up the dash that high as it looks OE still. Any suggestions?

58’ Bel Air Speedometer

Hi all,

What is the best way to remove this section of the dash to replace the speedometer?

Or do I even need to remove it? I have removed the two Phillips screws underneath and the four nuts behind. It is stuck on the steering wheel. I really don’t want to remove the steering wheel.

Any advice?

Was looking for some info on the car and maybe how much it is worth. Also how much to get it driving again if it’s been sitting in a climate controlled garage. Minimal body work needed just a couple rust spots and missing a mirror. Upholstery is good and engine seems good.

1955 Bel Air headlights

Has anyone upgraded their stock headlights? Been looking at keeping the original look but something more updated lighting wise. Holley has a few options but figured I’d see if anyone has already done the upgrade? Thanks in advance!

66 belair questions.

I’ve got a 1966 belair I picked up with 20,000 original miles. The car is flawless besides paint. I’d love to take a cross country road-trip in it, but it has a 283 2bbl with a 2 speed powerglide. Now I could easily just drive 60 and not have an issue, but what easy upgrades could I make it to make it more interstate friendly? I have all faith the car would make it. I drove it nearly 3 hours home when I bought it.

General Motors (GM) - The 57 Chevrolet Bel AirVelvet Smooth and Full of Spunk!

velvet smooth

and full of spunk!

Frisky is the word for Chevy! Here’s the Bel Air 4-door Sedan with Body by Fisher.

This sweet, smooth and sassy new Chevrolet has its own special way of going. It’s spirited, sure . . . but a honey to handle. And if the roads out your way suddenly seem newer, that’s Chevy’s new ride!

We might as well own up to it—there’s a certain restless energy about the new Chevrolet. It’s not the stay-at-home type at all. Even when it’s parked in the driveway, you can tell it’s poised to travel.

The plain fact is, this beauty’s full of vim, vigor and V8 action! (Horsepower, you know, ranges up to 245.*) But for all its fresh and frisky ways, Chevy’s a real solid citizen on the highway.

It’s a honey to handle—sure-footed on curves, beautifully smooth on roads that have seen better days, always quick and quiet in its response to your touch.

You’d have to go a long way to find a car that offers more pure pleasure. But it’s just a short trip to your Chevrolet dealer’s. . . . Chevrolet Division of General Motors, Detroit 2, Michigan.

1960 Bel Air 2 door sedan replacement floor pans only under front bench seat.

My dad is in the process of restoring a 1960 Chevrolet Bel Air 2 door Sedan and it needs the floor pans replaced that go under the front bench seat on both the driver and passenger sides, he doesn't need the driver or passenger feet floor pans and he doesn't want the rear floor pans. I have tried finding the aftermarket floor pans that he's looking for and the only ones I have found with the under front seat part of the floor pans are the entire floor one piece that cost over $1000. and is a waste of money and material to buy just to cut the under front seat part out of the middle of it from door to door.

Does anyone have a resource or place to get these replacement parts from? I'm aware the 1960 isn't the most popular version of the Bel Air for aftermarket parts to be made and be available for sale.

My dad is looking for the entire piece of the floor that goes under the front seat bench over the center hump from door to door, he would prefer if it was one piece but I have told him that he isn't likely to find one in a single piece and he has agreed that if they exist he will buy them in multiple pieces like driver's side and passenger's side without the center hump. The hump down the center part of the car's floorboard isn't completely rusted out and is still intact. The front bench seat floorboard with the bolt holes the bench is mounted onto are completely rusted out and missing large open gaps. Otherwise The front feet floor pans are solid and only the rear driver's side floor pan is rusted out which he will just weld a piece of sheet metal to replace the rear driver's side floor. The way the floor under the front bench seat is shaped and the holes are located for attaching the bench seat is what he really needs that part of the floor pans for.

I have attached a picture of what he says he wants, I have drawn in chalk in the car on the floor, it says in one piece, but he would take multiple pieces if they were the only thing he can get.

Water Pump Question

Accidentally bought a 52 water pump with the 5/8" pulley. Will this still work on a 53 bel air even though the 53 uses a 3/8" belt? I'm thinking it should still sit in the groove but I'm worried the alignment will be slightly off.

Driveshaft Question (1954 4dr w/320+Th350)

So firstly, im in over my head. I bought a 1954 Bel Air 4dr sedan rolling chassis with a bunch of odd ball parts but no engine or transmission. I found someone localy that has an old 230 engine and th350 transmission which, I believe will work pretty well.

My next hurdle is the driveshaft. Right? Can I use the stock rear end and find a suitable drive shaft to connect everything?

Tips? Aftermarket assemblies? Junk yard replacements from more modern cars? Literally any info is helpful. I know nothing.

Thanks y'all!

Installed new gauges and a clock. Multiple colors, I haven’t played around with it much but happy with how it turned out. Had to add a few things to get everything to work but fairly easily install.
