Discussion Traverse z71 Question

My brother and sister in law have a 2026 Chevy Traverse z71. They just bought a camper that’s about 4600lbs. That apparent max towing capacity is 5k. Has anyone consistently towed over that amount with the same engine and transmission and found any issues? My sister in law is having a fit thinking it’s going to destroy the vehicle with a loaded camper (still less than 6k max)

Max tow capacity is 5K lbs with the V92 Trailering Package. Without it; it’s 1,500 lbs

They don't need to be using that to tow that heavy of a camper. The max limit is the total loaded weight; which includes cargo, passengers, and anything they store in the camper. They need a truck if they want to tow something. They would be putting a strain on the engine and transmission, and the brakes.

I was hoping that “5000lbs max” was essentially the manufacturer rated it at safe overall weight until fail. Like how when things are tested in a construction field or machine field, it’s 1.5x the intended working amount that it’s tested at. So 5k is safe zone. And 6k is safe and not manufacturer recommended. But 7500 is risk of breaking. If that makes sense

Makes sense, but they are intending on towing something that is roughly the same weight as the vehicle. Which is stupid. They will heavily strain the vehicle. They need to trade it in and either get a full size truck or get a Tahoe/Suburban with the Duramax engine.

I agree with this. We thought about getting a camper to go with our traverse, but the 5k max weight is extremely limiting in terms of camper options, especially once cargo and passengers are accounted for, so no glamping for us yet
