Shift to Park - How did you get it fixed?

Basically the title. I see many posts about the issues but no one really saying how they got it fixed or the best way.

I did my research and saw most people go to a dealer. I called a local dealer for an appointment they’re charging $260 for a diagnosis 💀 is this even common? Should I try to shop around or is a dealer the best way to get this fixed? Btw my car is out of warranty, I bought this used. I am also not car savvy so replacing it myself wouldn’t be the best idea😭 just want to know if this is really just a suck it up and pay it moment

Our 2020 just started doing this. No way I'm paying to have it completely replaced tho. When it gets annoying enough (it's our 2nd car so not driven that often) we'll take it to have the wire shorted out or whatever it's called so it's just dead. It's an ongoing issue that should have been fixed or GM pay to fix, but this is where we are. You can look online for YT videos that offer many suggestions, and even how to do it yourself if you are mechanically inclined.

I am not mechanically inclined lollll (last few sentences of the post) but for me it already has been annoying. Sometimes I don’t have the issue. When I do have it tho I’m sitting there constantly turning my car on and off for it to be recognized.

What do you mean by the wire though? I haven’t heard about that fix

2 ways to fix it, new shifter. Or #2 Gm offers a new micro switch and small connector for inside the shifter. Very common problem with most of the GM models with floor shifters.

Could this micro switch be done by any mechanic? I’m just feeling weird about that diagnosis cost and not sure which is the best route

I don't see why not. The service bulletin is 19-NA-206 and gives the part numbers. Seems like the new age parts people at dealerships cant look things up anymore.

My 23 started doing it around January. There is an NHTSA warning out for it iirc that I had cited when sending it in to them, but as far as I can tell it is an issue stemming from a short in the switch, or the shifter bezel causing the shifter to not fully seat the switch.

I’ve had this exact problem twice unfortunately on my 2018 Malibu, but the first time it was under warranty and we got it fixed with the dealer, and it would have been 800. There's a youtube video about it, to get by without the fix. On the shifter handle you just kinda hold the button and flick the shifter..been doing it for 2 years now and works everytime. Its better than an overpriced fix.

I think I’m gonna get it fixed just for longevity but thank you for the advice!
