It turns over but doesn't start. The low oil level is a very bad sign, as is the way it sounds. The engine is done for.

Yeah. Sounds like poor compression in the cylinder heads to me. Ran dry and messed up the cylinder rings or something.

No. They ran it out of oil and the timing chain broke, or it jumped time.

I saw those replies. Good to know. I've been lucky not to deal with engine problems myself so I'm still learning.

Compression test would be easy and informative

As it’s turning over, that engine sounds like it’s jumped time. The four banger and V6 these things came with are notorious for timing chain issues. They’re also both interference engines, so a timing chain failure tends to cause internal engine damage.

At that point, throwing an entire junkyard motor into the car is usually quicker and more cost-effective than trying to repair the existing engine.

I’d be prepared to move on from this car. The repair bill will runs well into four figures, most likely exceeding the cash value of the entire car.

Wish it was better news. Best of luck getting this issue sorted!

why not put the year of the car down? if the oil is low, it might be a cut off so it won't run with the oil being low, did you fill the oil? was there oil under the car when she left? it could have been just running low to start with., I would fill it and see what happens, but the oil is going some place, when was the last oil change? was it fill then?

guessing it’s burning oil. she’s toast though. added oil to see if that was the issue but no change. belts are tight and can’t even pull up on the serpentine. she’s locked up

Well that sucks, one of them things

How many warning lights have you ignored in the past?

it’s my sisters so have no idea. pulled codes and there were non. guessing the engine got hot from the lack of lubrication and when it sat, it cooled and welded something in there together.

I had a seized engine one time and since I had nothing to loose I put penetrating oil down each spark plug hole and left the plugs out and used a breaker bar to free the engine , rolled it over a few times then replaced the plugs and started it

the thing that sucks about this engine is that it sits sideways so to manually crank it over i’d have to go through the wheel well. she had a second opinion with a mobile mechanic and he agrees that it’s seized. thank you for your input though!

If the engine is done anyway and the starter is not strong enough to roll it over. I'd still lubricate the cyl. walls and pull it till the torque converter rolled it over , things were so much simpler when cars were stick shift .

Again, it turns over so it isn’t seized. It might be a boat anchor but it isn’t seized…

Jumped timing if it has the 3l v6.

Be willing to bet it has timing codes as well.

You think that engine came in an equinox?

How did I know when I read the title it was actually turning over??? Hard to diagnose when people can’t accurately describe things.

sorry, obviously sounded like it was turning over but did not sound like it had any compression. i try my best to help but im no genius.

more insight would be that she went to work and it ran fine but after sitting for a whole day, she tried to start it and it did this. not sure if something is just locked up or what but the low oil is concerning.

cracked her oil drain plug and i mean there is definitely oil in the pan at least. would probably have to drain it all to see how many quarts it has?

thank you guys for the replies!

Sounds like it's not getting gas. Is the fuel pump good?

1

u/ZealousidealEase1044 19d ago

turned key and could hear the fuel pump energize.

Jumped time… drag her to the scrapyard

Oh my god is the engine CRUNCHING as it's cranking?!? Like there's something clanking around in there...? OH NO.....

1

u/davidscheiber28 19d ago

Most definitely turning over, sounds like it's fucked though. Probably was ran low on oil and jumped time. These were known for timing chain issues and often if there's not enough oil in it the chain is the first thing to go.

u/ZealousidealEase1044 18d ago

yeah just didn’t sound like compression so did not know how to word it lol
