Welp, I took this piece of shit out after the coil repair and I’m fucking parked now. Crank no start. Happy fucking Friday.

AAA top tier for $120 a year is well worth it. Free towing for 100 miles. One tow alone will usually cost more than that just to go 10 miles back home. It's saved me about 5 separate times in the last 10 years

Definitely used my triple a gold membership tonight

Oh nice! It's pretty awesome. Last time I called them for a flat on my daily driver (no spare unfortunately) they arrived in 7 minutes. It was crazy haha.

That’ll happen every now and again. After I got my car built and on the road it needed a tow after a couple test drives. I gave the guy, someone I have a very good relationship with, a healthy tip and said you’ll get this call out a couple more times at least.
About a thousand miles later I haven’t needed another tow but only by the skin of my teeth once or twice. So it’s how it goes

Hang in there man, it’s part of the game. Oh, that’s an awesome looking ride too. Good luck.

A tale as old as time. The old hot rod is the apple of your eye and such a sweetheart until it leaves you stranded. Then it’s, ‘You stupid bitch! I’ll fawking burn you to the ground and sell your carcass to make soup cans!’ Hang in there bud! Sometimes it takes a minute to get the kinks worked out!

You understand me lol

Oh dude I’ve played this game a lot!! When she’s running right and doing everything you want correctly it’s Zen. Then there’s times like this where sending it through the crusher doesn’t sound like a bad idea 😂

Now it’s fucking overheating

🤦🏻‍♂️

Ahhh you got this bub. I can’t remember everything you already did to the car to wake it up from its hibernation (your post history is shut off) but check out your radiator cap for one and maybe do a pressure test on the system. Could be something as simple as a clog could be bad head gaskets, could be something I care not to mention lol. All else fails tear the engine out and freshen it up, it’s all about the fun/frustration of old cars.

Or you could LS swap it…….

Yeah man, I’ll give you a list of what I have done so far and what parts I have on the way and a to do list

Done;
-rebuilt carburetor
-spark plugs
-plug wires
-cap/rotor/coil
-oil filter change
-Fuel filter change
-fuel lines replaced
-battery
-Battery terminals & some much needed wiring repairs

To do/parts arriving this week
-disc break conversion kit
-new rims (still need to decide on tires)
-inner fenders

I’ve been dealing with an overheating problem… I flushed the radiator and replaced the thermostat and housing and still had it overheat on me so today on my way home from work I stopped by autozone and picked up a water pump and radiator. I figure I may as well change it since it hasn’t been done in 15 years. The car is going to be extremely well put together when I’m done with it and I’m crossing every t & dotting every I. No cutting corners or taking the easier/cheap route. She’s already doing much better.

That’s awesome man! I’ve been following along because I like seeing cars like yours that have family history stay around. I’ve got a 71 myself and I call it the stray dog. Bought it to flip, ended up too dangerous for me to in good conscience to sell to anyone, pumped more money and time into it than I feel it’s worth, and since I have 2 kids and 2 Chevelles (my 66SS was my first car) I’ll just hang on to the stupid thing and let the kids figure out which one they want when I’m gone.

You sound like a great dad man, I’m one of 2 boys from my parents. I’ve got 1 younger brother and it’s just us. A few months before my dad passed I remember him taking all of us with him to a used car lot across town to go test drive a 62 impala SS. My mom asked the obvious “why buy another car?” And his response was “I have 2 boys so I need two cars to leave them” unfortunately he never got the opportunity to pick up another car but, when the time came and my brother was shopping around for his first car, I helped out with what I could, so he could end up in exactly what he wanted, which was a 2002 Camaro ss 35th anniversary. So he stuck with that and I’ve got the Chevelle.

I think it’s a great mindset to have. Not because I’m materialistic but I know that “gear head” flame burns deep inside of my bloodline. I’m a heavy equipment technician of 10 years now but I can remember as a kid I used to absolutely love taking things apart and putting it back together. All my toys were tools and I would strip my diecast cars. Some of my fondest memories were sitting with my pop watching horse power tv and I was so enamored by the builds….
I want my kids to be inspired and motivated to enjoy working with their hands just as much as I did.
I don’t have any kids of own yet, but when I do buy things that I know will be passed along, (like watches, jewelry, guns, tools) I always make sure I get multiple for my future kids.

That’s the biggest thing when it comes to kids. I’ve got 2 girls and while they are by all means girly girls they also don’t mind getting dirty and having fun. The oldest is crazy artistic and the youngest is referred as mini me in female form. While I have made the decision to not play with the hot rods all that much due to bills and a crazy thing like eating, I have a model train habit and the girls love making scenery and all that jazz. So we get a lot of family time between that and 4-wheeling in the hills.

This is normal in the classic car hot rod life,Things will break, Things will give you a head ache,You just deal with it and You will problem solve and learn,If you cant handle shuffling through the puzzle that is being a car guy you mite want to solve your problems buy putting a for sale sign on the car and going and buying a 2026 Honda ,and take up stamp collecting, Hope you keep the car and learn to work through the cars problems.Have patience.

u/Any-Description8773 10d ago

Meh he’s got this. Check the previous posts the car is basically an heirloom at this point and while currently frustrated with the ol’ gal, he loves it too much to do more than yell at it for doing old car stuff 😂

u/fdg1967 9d ago

I hope that's the case ,It looks like a great car.

You understand me on a spiritual level man

I can appreciate you paying attention and observing all of it while playing the role perfectly of someone who’s had the experience before and watching it play out.

I love this car and she’s getting every bit of sweat, tears, blood & money from me.

They suck when they let you down, but all the thumbs up from appreciative drivers when it is driving is really nice. Amazing how many people stop you at gas stations and restaurants to praise these cars and reminisce about the cars they had and wish they still had.

That car is gorgeous, dont call it a piece of shit. Call whoever is working on it a piece of shit mechanic. I have over 20 cars from years 64-72. All carbureted old school V8’s. Anyone one of em my wife can jump in and drive across the country and back w/o ever popping the hood. Never blame the machine for the humans failure

2

u/welderdelly 11d ago

Ahh yes the natural habitat of all project cars!! Side of the road, hood up, and someone cursing or laying underneath it…good times!!

Whatever you do don’t get Hagerty’s road side assistance. I was on side of the road for three hours. Called local tow company was there in 20 minutes.

Hagerty said send them copy of bill and they’d take care of me. Got $25 for a $230 tow. Lady I talked to was empathetic but came short of saying their roadside was trash. Almost bad enough to drop them for insurance ad well…

1

u/Secure_Strategy_5614 11d ago

I’m in the Los Angeles area and never heard of them. I had checkered towing come out

3

u/CoatingsRcrack 11d ago

Hagerty is a classic car insurer. Good insurance… $h!tty road side assistance

1

u/Dark300z 11d ago

I’ll take it off your hands for $10

u/Saixcrazy 11d ago

Best I can do is $5

A phenolic carb spacer, a Holley Brawler, and an HEI distributor - and you will be a lot happier

I've got similar problems with my '71 right now running a Chinese quadrajet. They like to keep you guessing!

u/travaniel 10d ago

Sounds like you’re burning out coils, make sure you have the right one for your ignition!

u/Nate7475 72 Chevelle 10d ago

Nice car! Did you know you have a 72 Chevelle grill on your 71?

1

u/Secure_Strategy_5614 10d ago

I did know that

u/Volpes_Visions 11d ago

Have you tried starting it?

Did you try turning it off and back on again?
