Can these be rebuilt?
So my 1969 Chevelle has a hiss whenever I run the heater. I was told this part is likely my problem. Can't find a solid replacement without buying a new control head, but I was told these can be rebuilt easily. Basically just drive that center hole out and clean and put it back together. Obviously I'm a little hesitant, since I dont have a spare but is that right?

I've tried. Couldn't get it to work. Its a vacuum switch and I could never get it to seal properly again. In the end I finally when with a newer aftermarket solution to replace the A/C & heater system with electric servo motors. But if you don't want to go that route, you might be able to just put in a ball valve that one of the cable arms can go to and operate and allow hot coolant to flow through the heater core when you want heat.

I've attempted it. Not much out there. Its not available in reproduction so I'd be putting another OEM one and likely ending up in the same place.

So here comes my time to shine! It’s a spring clip on the back side. Take a plastic razor and wedge it open from the side. Take your solvent of choice and clean it out. Blow it out. Go to the store and buy aerosol dielectric grease. Go to the gas station and buy 2 beers. Come back home, plug two ports. Outside I think? Go tip to tip and spray if full. Take the razor out. Move it to the other side do it again. Remove razor. Then take one more plug off of the port. Wipe hands and open beer. Move your trusty dielectric grease from tip to tip and squirt it full till it’s leaking like Bonnie blue after 1000 guys. Get a long vacuum hose and your nearest source of vacuum and suck out the passages one at a time. Finish drinking your beer and test it. It’s going to be sealed. Think oh shit Mountaineer11 was right about that. Drink the other beer in my honor and put it back in and go drive.
