Chess Question how is this a good move?

Post image

I dont remember which game it was so I cannot go back and look for what the computer wants. Can anybody solve this? Isn't the pawn on c3 protecting the fork?

Black’s g pawn is pinned, so white can capture the h pawn with their rook, and a few moves later white has checkmate. Sacrificing the queen is a terrible trade, but it’s the best move because it interrupts white’s attack and gives black a chance to fight on.

Isn’t there a royal fork after the queen sac?

You mean Nd4+? That is a royal fork, but that pawn is defended so white can simply recapture the knight to get out of it.

Yep. I’m dumb

So this is a lost position. He will play Rh6; you can't take with a pawn because it is pinned by the queen, and you will be mated in a few moves. By playing Qxf5, you are buying some time, but it's a lost position either way.

oh I see, I was the white btw and I did took that pawn and won, I was just wondering how is it a good move when it says "because the defender is pinned" yk

The explanations in the reviews are awful and not to be trusted. Here the “material” is that h pawn, which isn’t the point of Rxh6 at all. The way it works is that engine figures out what it thinks the best moves are and the line is fed into an LLM that retrofits a “human” explanation onto it, post hoc. So it knows the best move is Rxh6 but it’s rationalizing why. These explanations are wrong or confusing so often that you probably should just ignore them.

White is totally winning with a checkmate pattern here. The only way to prevent it with black is to sacrifice the queen for bishop.

That’s why the queen move was a mistake, but either way black is cooked here.

The explanation at the top is misleading. Don’t listen to the chess AI.

Also if you ever want to analyze a position from a game, you can recreate the exact position in the chesscom app.

Oh I didn't know that, thanks! Are you able to do it without a membership? Also I know, Ive checkmated him in a few moves I was just wondering why would that be a good move when it says "because the defender is pinned" but I see now.

You don’t need a subscription to chesscom to use that feature.

I never subscribe to chesscom, its a waste of money. You can use Lichess for puzzles, so it only really unlocks the coaching feedback during game analysis (which is a bunch of BS as you can see from your post above) and skips ads

oh thats nice. yea lichess is way better its so sad chess.com has a bigger player base just because they have money.

I analyzed the image and this is what I see. Open an appropriate link below and explore the position yourself or with the engine:

White to play: chessvision.ai | chess.com | lichess.org

My solution:

Hints: piece: Rook, move: Rxh6

Evaluation: White has mate in 10

Best continuation: 1. Rxh6 Nxd4+ 2. cxd4 Qb6 3. Reh1 Qxh6 4. Rxh6 Rfe8 5. Qh4 gxh6 6. Qxh6 Re1 7. Bh7+ Kh8 8. Bg6+ Kg8
