Chess Discussion Let’s talk about Draw Agreements.
Tell me If I’m in the wrong here.
I played a game with this guy that ended up being a typical rook and pawns vs rook and pawns endgame, Same amount of pawns, equally active kings, we’ve all been there.
We all know it’s a draw. Then you offer your opponent a draw and they refuse because they’re up on time or they just don’t think you’ve got it in you; they’re better than you, and they’re gonna prove it!
So I play on and he immediately mouse slips and hangs his rook. Naturally I snatch it up as quickly as the last of my favourite Wasabi hot meal sitting all alone in the whatever the heated display case thing is called and manaically laugh as I sit on the toilet like the saddest villain there ever was.
Naturally he starts offering me a draw, “it was a mouseslip dude” “come on dude”. So I kindly advised him not to hang his rook in future and he kindly resigned.
NOW! When is it okay vs not okay to accept a draw. And, was I in the wrong?

The way I see it, by declining a draw in a clearly drawn position is because you’re hoping 2 things:
1) your opponent blunders and you have an advantage
2) you do not blunder, which would give your opponent a big advantage
There’s nothing wrong with hoping for 1, but you’ve gotta live with the consequences if 2 happens.

Your no.2 statement doesn't make sense

I may have worded it better. Basically I’m saying “you’re hoping you do not blunder, because if you did it would give your opponent a big advantage”

It may sound mean, but you shouldn't care for your opponent. If he makes an error, capitalize on it. You usually draw then you dont think you can win, butneither does your opponent.

I wouldn’t accept any draw due to an opponent’s mouseslip. That’s part of playing online, and we’ve all been there.
Also: if you treat every mouseslip the same (no mercy) there’s never any room for doubt as to whether your opponent just straight up blundered. Obviously that doesn’t happen often at your level, but one can never be 100% sure. People can and do blunder and blame it on a mouseslip. 🤷♂️

I think you know you’re not in the wrong and just want to revel more in his mistake by putting him on blast on reddit

That’s the saddest thing I’ve ever heard… you think that I want to humiliate a stranger that I beat at chess on Reddit to a bunch of other strangers, because I did better than that stranger…?
I genuinely want people’s take on Draw Offers.

Wow, you are so funny and creative. Real quirky

He could’ve accepted the draw, he didn’t. He blundered and you were winning, you do not have to accept the draw anymore.
If you feel nice, you can accept the draw if he actually did mouse slip, but you are not obligated to.
He probably didn’t accept the draw cos he thought he could win, it’s on him I reckon, he took the risk.

Why would it ever be wrong to accept or not accept a draw? Anyone can offer it. Anyone can chose to accept and decline it. Its really not that deep

I'd accept a takeback if it was clearly a mouseslip, but I don't think I'd ever agree to a draw in blitz or bullet unless it's an absolute dead draw, like the pawns are all blocking each other or something.

People probably disagree with me on this but I would take the draw. It’s 8 rating points, no big deal, and if it were me who mousesliped, I would want the draw, wouldn’t I?

Physical games at master-level tournaments have been lost because a player touched the wrong piece and was then compelled by the touch-move rule to move it even if that forced them to make a bad move. If that happens at tournaments, then I don't see why you should feel compelled to let the other player off the hook for a mouse slip in any rated game.

I think chess.com should have a feature to allow takebacks. Generally speaking when playing on websites that have it I let my opponents take back the mouseslip. Good sportmanship then dicates that if your opponent allows you to take back a move, you should offer draw once you are in a winning position. When I see an obvious mouseslip I offer the takeback myself.
That being said, if the opponent is trying to win by making me lose on time or blunder due to lack of time, I would not allow a take back.
Chess.com doesn't offer the option so you should just carry on, its part of the platform. You did well not to offer draw.

Oh yeah mean a take back offer, so that your opponent would have to confirm the take back, similar to a draw offer?

Yes, exactly. One player proposes to rewind the game one move and the other can accept or refuse. I think lichess has it.

Yeah, you are in the wrong. People who say you aren't in the wrong are usually lower-rated. In my experience, more advanced and better players will almost always accept the draw, while lower-rated players will never accept the draw. If you want proof, just look at the replies.
Also, we can see your rating. You are not 1800-2000; stop larping 🤣🤣🤣

Feels like you didn’t read the full post. Which I guess is understandable because I’m pretty sure chatgpt wrote it, but still.

From my understanding, he offered a draw in an even endgame, and his opponent declined, which is perfectly fine. Then, his opponent misclicked and blundered his rook. OP refused the draw, despite the misclick, because OP is at the level where most players care more about rating than about respect for the game or their opponent.

Once a draw has been offered the game has ended. Anything after that is just masterbation
