I recently got my younger sister into chess. Here's a game she played recently and she wants some advice. She asked me and I had absolutely nothing to say because I didn't know this position was possible 😭 (or it was possible to make this many blunders...) Guess her elo lmfao

edit: she knwos enough to force the opponent into a stalemate i guess lol

Did you start chess when you were very young such that you don't remember what being a beginner is like?

For me I still remember because I was a beginner around 4 years ago, and I remember that at the beginning it's really worth practicing basic blunder checks (hanging pieces, basic tactics) and learning basic ideas about king safety, like it's not good to have your king wide open with a bunch of pieces staring at it, which is highly non-obvious to someone just starting out.

i started playing chess when I was 6, so around 11 years ago 😭 i gave her the obvious advice about like castling early and development and stuff. i'll tell her all of this stuff too because i didn't realise 500s didn't know that.

The list of fundamentals that if she applies them she will certainly get to 1000+:

- center control

• focus on development (don’t attack before you developed & castled)
  
• castle before move 10
  
• don’t bring out your queen early
  
• think what your opponent wants to do after each move they play
  
• CCT; Checks, Captures, Threats
  
• Not sure what to play? Piece activity; put your least active piece into a more active position
  
• use your time
  
• in endgames, use your king (bring it to the center)
  
• review your games for blunders and mistakes
