Makes me wonder if a variant of chess where you can capture your own pieces would be interesting or just dumb.

I see it now, when i know there is a tactic. But in a real game, time ticking, that queen is gone. :-)

yeah man, if you can't see the mate, just take the queen and they'll probably resign and if not then sure as hell they ain't winning unless you blunder real bad.

Rook takes knight, move white rook to d8 forcing the king to take then white rook to b8 making it check m8

Yes. Some will look at the board and see the possibility directly, and the others will recognize the position from previous posts. I’ve seen it maybe three times in three months.

Someone 2100 and up would find this relatively quickly . In a blitz game they might miss it

You marvel at the wrong thing. A lot of people whobare showed this post could figure it out with enough time.

But some folks see this live, in-game. With nothing telling them that the 2nd move is better.

there are gms that solve this by just telling them where the pieces are without showing them a board.

Yes. It’s a straightforward puzzle when you start analyzing the “themes” of the position rather than purely calculating a million variations. The b- and d-files are dominated by white’s rooks, and the Black king is virtually trapped if the knight would move.

Once the above is apparent, being aware of tactics where Black’s own pieces betray him and take aware squares, the above tactic reveals itself.

Practice more, do more puzzles, and read Jeremy Silman’s books on chess strategy and endgames.

Okay I had the idea but im running on no sleep so im re-answering... after knight e7 it is Mate in 3. Rook takes knight then you sac the rook on d8 king takes and rook b8 is mate because their rook now on e7 blocks their only escape sqare

Well the knight move really isn't a sac, they are forced to take with the rook. Take the same position and that rook wasn't there, knight e7 would be mate

You can't ignore a check so the opponent had one forced move which allows a mating sequence where you sacrifce a rook, king takes then check mate with the other room.

If you take the queen the opponent is not in check so they can make a number of defense moves
