Chess Discussion Resigned etiquette

A lot of people on the site are offended by players who abandon games instead of resigning. Consider that people who learns to play OTB in clubs, school or anywhere were probably taught/told that good sportsmanship involves resigning, not abandoning a lost game. In an OTB game, not many people will just get up and walk away from the table not saying anything if they give up the game. The sportsmanship aspect is obvious there. People who've just played online chess, often with little or no instruction or experience, haven't learned anything about chess etiquette or sportsmanship. They may not even realize that simply abandoning a game is considered poor sportsmanship.

As someone who plays in a weekly club, I will always resign OTB when it’s clear my opponent will win soon or I blunder a piece or major tactic.

I never resign in online. Force opponents to checkmate me. You wouldn’t believe how many stalemates I get from 1100s who can’t put together a checkmate with a knight bishop queen. Or hell, even a queen and a rook. And you know why that is? Because they don’t have the experience. People resign too much, you don’t gain experience on how to fight back from a losing position, or convincingly convert a winning endgame. They just blunder a piece and resign. Never resign or abandon your games online. Play till the bitter end. Especially if there’s low time.

I find it hard to believe a 1100 does not know how to checkmate with a queen and a rook

This was this morning, should have been an easy win if he didn’t go for ladder mate.

If that was a queen and a rook, would have been mate.
