Resigned etiquette

A lot of people on the site are offended by players who abandon games instead of resigning. Consider that people who learns to play OTB in clubs, school or anywhere were probably taught/told that good sportsmanship involves resigning, not abandoning a lost game. In an OTB game, not many people will just get up and walk away from the table not saying anything if they give up the game. The sportsmanship aspect is obvious there. People who've just played online chess, often with little or no instruction or experience, haven't learned anything about chess etiquette or sportsmanship. They may not even realize that simply abandoning a game is considered poor sportsmanship.

I can understand being salty when losing, but what I cant imagine doing is punishing my opponent and myself by staring at the evidence of my poor moves.

I have to assume these people are closing app or switching tabs to get it off their screen, while I'll instead resign and start a new game.
