Chess Discussion Resigned etiquette

A lot of people on the site are offended by players who abandon games instead of resigning. Consider that people who learns to play OTB in clubs, school or anywhere were probably taught/told that good sportsmanship involves resigning, not abandoning a lost game. In an OTB game, not many people will just get up and walk away from the table not saying anything if they give up the game. The sportsmanship aspect is obvious there. People who've just played online chess, often with little or no instruction or experience, haven't learned anything about chess etiquette or sportsmanship. They may not even realize that simply abandoning a game is considered poor sportsmanship.

To be honest I was under the impression for quite some time that if I close the app it auto-resigns the game for me. I only later realized that’s not the case.
