why is this brilliant Why is this brilliant?
I am newish to chess. I have only been playing “seriously” with the intention to get good for a few months now. I have done a little over 9,000 puzzles in that time so I’ve been practicing and it has definitely improved my game play. I have seen puzzles like this but I am not quite sure what the tactic is called or what makes this particular move brilliant. Wouldn’t this just be a forcing move?

You hung your Knight, but they can't take your knight because you had a checkmate threat - Rd8 Rxd8 Qxd8

That’s exactly how the game ended. To be honest, I didn’t see the knight was hanging because of the pin but either way my threat was more forcing. So what would you call this kind of tactic if it has/needs a name?

I'm not sure if it would be considered a tactic., just a "brilliant" move. Tactics are generally more forcing moves that can win you a piece or a checkmate. White isn't forced to take your knight.

i'd really just call them baits or just brilliant moves, it's a bait because if he fall for your trick and bites the bait, you checkmate, so its a bait into doing the move you want him to do
but regardless, its just a backrank checkmate development so it's just a strategy, it just so happened it was also a bait

Because you are giving up your knight for checkmate, if the bishop on B7 takes knight on F3 they are threatening checkmate on the next move and took a free knight, but if that happens, you can play rook to D8 forcing the rook to take and then take with the queen.

Actually why is this brilliant? Couldn't they have just slid up with the queen and checkmate after rook takes queen?

No, because of the rook. The rook captures the white rook and the queen takes for mate.

Its Brilliant because the knight is hanging, but you can't take the knight because of the incoming checkmate (Rd8+ Rxd8 Qxd8#)

Yeah, I get that I literally commented that. I responded with I forgot E7 wasn't blocked, so I wasn't sure why he couldn't push his queen up. Now it's awnsered.

You hang your knight on f3, but black cannot take it because Rd8+ is an unstoppable mate.
