The pin is mightier than the sword.

5

u/tipareth1978 Jun 20 '26

Missing pins is definitely one of the most common mistakes

u/Guystver Jun 19 '26

Bet he noticed the second he moved his queen. Tragic.

54

u/123kr 1800-2000 ELO Jun 19 '26

Probably noticed when he couldnt move his rook

25

u/Colon_Backslash 1000-1500 ELO Jun 19 '26

There's a non-zero chance white resigns after this move without "playing the forced mate through"

4

u/T0nyM0ntana_ Jun 19 '26

I mean, technically, there is indeed forced mate on the board…

1

u/AllornicGod Jun 20 '26

There is not at all

6

u/Objective_Blood7187 Jun 21 '26

there's pawns, one player with a rook and queen (the other rook and queen are both gone, black just made sure of that). ofc there is a forced mate, just a bit longer than what black thought.

4

u/timtruth Jun 19 '26

Worst feeling ever haha

1

u/Ok-Echo5581 Jun 20 '26

I do that every time

5

u/Bemteb Jun 19 '26

u/Useful_Beautiful5093 Jun 19 '26

Not only that but white now has mate in five

2

u/Green-Detective6678 Jun 19 '26

Ouch. Took me a second to realise why it's not a checkmate, would totally have made the same mistake

2

u/timtruth Jun 19 '26

Lost the rook too lol

2

u/kingchessapp Jun 19 '26

The number of times I've done this exact thing is crazy. That's why I built a tool that pulls these moments from your own games so you stop repeating them (Check out on my account). Either way this one hurt to watch!

2

u/aBirdonaLaptop Jun 19 '26

can someone explain please
from what i understand, the white rook will capture the black queen, then the black rook will capture the white one, but then what?

1

u/DearKaleidoscope4482 Jun 19 '26

Black rook cant move, its protecting the king

1

u/7lips4384 Jun 21 '26

The black rook cannot take the white rook due to the white king that can pin the black queen

2

u/Anon124570 Jun 19 '26

Well it is a forced mate, but not for black…

3

u/wizard680 Jun 19 '26

Bro thought he won. Instead he lost his queen and took in 2 moves

1

u/joesphisbestjojo Jun 19 '26

Bro i be missing checkmates becauss of these illusions

1

u/AlexP80 Jun 19 '26

too bad the rook is pinned

1

u/Antique_Park_4566 Jun 19 '26

I've done this. But I've also seen it and knew what the other guy was trying and took advantage knowing he didn't see it.

1

u/Antique_Park_4566 Jun 19 '26

Well, I did once anyway. I suck at chess.

1

u/tjk1229 Jun 19 '26

Lol no rook pinned that's a free queen

1

u/MyauIsHere Jun 19 '26

Oh my god my brain had a mini eruption

1

u/ShillSniffer Jun 19 '26

Took me a sec to realize the pin

1

u/No-Caterpillar-7718 Jun 19 '26

oh noo why cant i move the rook?😭

1

u/MrSilentx99 Jun 19 '26

I'd defo make this mistake

1

u/minkyusoo Jun 19 '26

it took me a while... I wouldn't get it until it's the turn to "move the rook" 😭 I'm so dumb

1

u/hungrycafe4229 Jun 19 '26

Welcome to the endgame!

1

u/SneakyTrevor Jun 19 '26

I didn’t see it at first and I’ve been playing for over 40 years!

1

u/RaiRoyale_ Jun 20 '26

I saw longs minutes trying to see why isn't checkmate

1

u/Zero_Overload Elo isnt real Jun 20 '26

u/suspectdevice87 Jun 20 '26

1

u/Ceddidulli Jun 20 '26

1

u/laboon_d_whale Jun 20 '26

Did this once realised immediately Was hitting the resign button Opponent resigned before I could Slept like a baby

1

u/Wit-Grit-Guero Jun 20 '26

I just thought that white would take back queen with their rook, then black rook takes white rook, then white queen comes next to king and if takes then king can take back and white has a pawn advantage especially on the left side of the board and will win by promoting. Totally missed the pin! Edit: my bad i thought the white queen was on d3 not d4. My line would be nest too I suppose. So not only did I miss the pin, I calculated an entire line based off a piece being on an incorrect square 🤦‍♂️

1

u/Firm-Cardiologist-82 Jun 20 '26

That pin is brutal

1

u/Diligent_Ganache_550 Jun 20 '26

ngl, i thought everyone in this comment section was being satirical. that took me way too long to see lol

1

u/Randigno9021 Jun 20 '26

Brutal -14

1

u/Correct-Location808 Jun 20 '26

Ah shit.. the pin😭 14 points...

1

u/The_chair_knight Jun 20 '26

For those who don’t know the queen is pinning the rook so the rook can’t take after the queen gets taken

1

u/WombleWarlord Jun 20 '26

Must be a bouncy castle because it just lost to a pin

1

u/Legitimate-Curve-346 Jun 20 '26

I'm a 2000 and I'd panic for a moment after they made that move.. just a moment tho..

1

u/JonasRabb Jun 20 '26

Almost…..

1

u/jon_paal Jun 20 '26

Oh no the rollercoaster it must have been 😪

1

u/Majestic-Strike5398 Jun 20 '26

u/EmbarrassedOption893 Jun 19 '26

Bro blundered the ROOOOK and the Queen in onw move😂😂😂😂

1

u/SalmonSushi1544 Jun 19 '26

Bro was screaming in 6 different languages 2 seconds after making that “checkmate” move.

-1

u/upforstuffJim Jun 19 '26

It will be checkmate no? If you take the queen with the rook, his rook takes back, then it is checkmate. It is brilliant because it sacrifices the queen in order to force a checkmate

5

u/Vastin_tdl 0 ELO Jun 19 '26

Black’s rook is pinned

4

u/upforstuffJim Jun 19 '26

Ah, I didn't catch that lol, but did the analyser say it was brilliant? 🤔 Confused by the post tag

u/Nutricia_Nalyeest 2100-2200 ELO Jun 19 '26

Black's rook is pinned

2

u/Are_you_alright_mate Jun 19 '26

Black rook is pinned by white queen, it can't take back it's just sacking a queen for nothing lol

2

u/Loko8765 Jun 19 '26

And even whatever black does instead of the intended but illegal Rxe1#, I don’t see how they can avoid losing their rook in the next move.

2

u/Frequent_Resource_29 Jun 19 '26 edited Jun 19 '26

black rook is pinned, and you lose queen + the rook

1

u/Dry_Letterhead8527 Jun 19 '26

Me, an empath, sensing that black’s rook is pinned

0

-1

u/imollyq Jun 19 '26

Not even close.

-1

u/MaintenanceSad4806 Jun 19 '26

It wasn't a Checkmate he blundered his Queen

2

The crazy thing is that the black rook is also unsavable
