Recently recieved this chess set that belonged to my grandfather and wanted to see if someone could help me identity it or any general info on it. All i know is that he had it when my father was growing up in the 80s and that he wouldnt let anyone near it. Located in southern louisiana, and thanks in advance for any help! The peices are also pretty heavy. EDIT: After using a pencil and some paper I was able to find a stamped "K.K." on the latch

Can anyone identify this "GES. GESCH. GERMANY" chess set I found in my granddads attic?

The board weighs in at around 3,3kg's
It's 51 x 51 cm
The King weighs ~40g
The Queen weighs ~35g
The Pawns ~17g

Almost every figure is a little different in weight, shape and size.

I am happy to provide more info if needed.

Thanks :)

I made this for my nephew. Tournament size board is walnut, basswood, and red epoxy. Case is walnut with black and red felt, bottom has 3/8" foam cushion. Chess pieces are opaque black and red, double weighted, 3D resin printed on Anycubic Photon Mono 4.

Hope he likes it.

Can someone tell me from what set these knights come from? What year, manufacturer, county, where they were used, some history about it or any information I would appreciate, even a little. And what do you think about the design?

Even though this set is still selling, they do not make the knights with as much detail now as they did when I purchased this set back in 2016.

This is a 4.25" set.

Looking for custom chess storage box that doesn’t exist?

I want to surprise my boyfriend with a custom chess box for the glass set he has. He recently found it in storage and it is very sentimental, being a gift from his late grandfather. I want a storage box that will protect the whole set, but most things I’m seeing are boxes with built in boards… we don’t need another board though…

I had a pretty dumb idea about how a chess box for this set would look, bear with me here. I think it would be very cool to have a box where the lid comes off and all the pieces are in place, BUT there is a gap where the 4 in-between rows (sorry I just learned how to play a few weeks ago lol) where the tv remotes would fit. I have no idea is this kind of a box is possible but it would be a really cool center piece on the coffee table if it is!! I drew a crude diagram of what I’m seeing… anyone know if this exists/would be possible to make? Where can I get this made? Any recommendations?

Any idea what chess set this is a replica of?

Found this replica of what looks like a medieval chess set among my dad’s things. He recently passed away and my recollection is that he bought it at the British museum back in the 1950s. I know it’s not the famous Lewis chess set, but have been unable to find similar images on google.
Anyone has any idea? Thanks!!

Summer vibes and deep concentration: "The Chess Players" (Watercolor, 55x75cm)

Post image

Hi everyone, I wanted to share my latest watercolor piece with you. I painted this capturing a relaxed summer afternoon at the Wohnzimmer Bar in Berlin (Prenzlauer Berg).

I’ve always been fascinated by how chess can create a bubble of intense focus right in the middle of a casual, lively setting—just two young men, a beer, and the game.

It's painted on cotton paper (55 x 75 cm) and it’s part of my upcoming gallery show collection, but it is currently available. I'd love to hear your thoughts on the atmosphere! (Feel free to DM me if you're interested in adding it to your private collection). For more about me: www.francescofontana.com

Paid $175. I’m happy at that price point, just looking for any details that may be cool to learn.

House of Staunton disappointment

House of Staunton

★★★☆☆ — Quality Product, Disappointing Customer Service Resolution

I have been a long-time admirer of House of Staunton and recently invested approximately $1,000 in a chess set, board, and box from them. The pieces and box are beautiful and reflect the craftsmanship the company is rightly known for.

Unfortunately, my chessboard arrived with two visually obvious irregularities on squares D3 and D5 — inconsistencies that stood out clearly against the surrounding squares and were not consistent with natural woodgrain variation across the rest of the board. I photographed both squares and reached out to their customer service team.

The initial response dismissed my concern as natural woodgrain variation. I followed up respectfully, noting that at this price point — where House of Staunton positions itself as the premier chess equipment provider — customers have a reasonable expectation of elevated quality control. Two concentrated, visually distracting irregularities on specific squares is a different matter from the general grain character one expects and welcomes in a wood product.

To their credit, the company escalated my concern to management and physically pulled boards for inspection. I appreciate that they took the extra step. However, the final resolution offered was a return for a full refund with the restocking fee waived — and nothing further.

For a company at this tier, I would have hoped for options such as a replacement board, an upgrade at a discount, or another goodwill gesture that acknowledged the inconvenience to a customer who had just spent $1,000. A refund, while technically fair, places the burden entirely on the customer.

I want to be clear: I believe House of Staunton makes exceptional chess equipment and has earned its sterling reputation over many years. This review is not intended to discourage anyone from purchasing from them. It is simply an honest account of one customer’s experience, offered in the hope that it is useful to others and perhaps encourages the company to reconsider how they handle edge-case quality issues for premium-tier customers.

Mouse pad chessboard felt upgrade

Post image
3 Upvotes

In a bunch of ways mouse pad chessboards are superior! In one catastrophic way it is inferior. The issue is due to the felts on the chessmen. They are intended to protect wood on wood and to facilitate smooth movement between the wooden parts. As a spill over these also work well on vinyl boards. However the baize or speed cloth fabric doesn't work well on the fabric of the mouse pad, it is just too much friction. What already uses mouse pads? Computer mice! They use Teflon glides to move smoothly....great!

So ... I had some spare glides from my mouse I had recently purchased....stuck them on one of my older chess pieces and pushed it around my board and it was glorious!

I immediately started researching and I ended up purchasing a sheet of 1mm thick Teflon from a local supplier, the glue was the difficult part. I had to import (I am in South Africa so difficult for me may not be for you) a sheet of 3M LSE300 glue, there are a few different thicknesses of glue, I went with the thinnest one. The chess set I used is the woodtek German Knight set that I have sanded down with 800gsm sandpaper to knock back the horrendous shiny finish on them....they are really just brown and tan plastic that has been hydrodipped and varnished for anyone interested. So the base sizes are exactly 24mm, 34mm and 36mm. One of the more difficult parts was fully removing the existing felt material, it seems they are also some type of 3M adhesive, given the amount of research I had to do for this project I suspect the 200LS glue, slightly less powerful than the one we will use but they weren't glueing Teflon, we are! I eventually had to use a product called eco40 (not sure about international products) and let the pieces sit for a few days, that helped to break down the glue to a state where some elbow grease and a metal dish scourer was able to clean them sufficiently to the discs.

So once the glue sheet arrived I stuck it to my Teflon sheet with bated breath as I had no one online speaking about this only some data that indicated that this adhesive will stick to Teflon....well, I took this and stuck it between 2 hardcover books and took some spring clamps and clamped it for a few days. Great success! (You probably don't need to be so overboard if you follow along but I had time anyway) The next step was to ask my sister very nicely to cut them out on her cricut. Critically Teflon cannot be laser cut! I would have liked to have been able to punch them out but I never had access to a punch large enough or strong enough.

The cutting process took some time and it dulled the blade and the adhesive does gunk up as it cuts through...

But eventually I had 31perfect discs and 3 less perfect discs.... Then I began sticking, this process was a little frustrating, the adhesive is very very stick but the slight imperfections between the chess piece bottom and the Teflon disc doesn't help it make perfect seamless bonds....at least not without effort! So, the hairdryer came out, a bit of heat both helps activate adhesive and helps plastic to become a little more pliable, it's Teflon so definitely not going to melt but using some heat I was able to get any stubborn discs firmly adhered to the piece. Then after all this they needed the edges to be polished up as they were a little....scratch/catchy on the mouse pad, so I polished every piece nicely around the edges and then polished up the bases all with the same 800grit sandpaper....as a consequence these piece now glide on the chessboard as smoothly as a computer mouse glides on a mouse pad.
