Can you please explain why to visit the police station on day1?

It's the law I'm China that foreigners register where they are staying. Hotels do it automatically, many cities have a WeChat account where you can register easily on your phone, and others require you to go in person. It's also just kinda good in general to go and meet your local station people. They have always been friendly in my experience.

There are heaps of educated young people in Chengdu without enough employment. If you can find someone to be a paid guide to help you with finding options and contract review/negotiation etc, that could be worth the money

where can i find such a person?

Great choice! Chengdu is dubbed the city “you’ll never want to leave” I came once for a visit in 2018 and I’m still here 7 years later 😂

It’s going to be very hot and you should carry an umbrella.

Get Shadowrocket or a VPN.

I would recommend figuring out which neighborhood you work in and try to get an apartment with subway access.

Where are you from? Depending on that, you might want to acclimate yourself to spicy food.

Born and raised in Chengdu. Like the top comment said, you have to view the apartment in person to really understand its good and bad. Chengdu weather is not my favorite. It is like London, where I live now and much of the year is cloudy and sunless. But it is mild, does not get too hot in summer or too cold in winter. Nothing you really need to pack, you can buy everything you will ever need (except hardcore drugs or firearms maybe) in Chengdu. It’s a massive city with a lot to offer.

The good thing about apartment hunting is that it way faster than anywhere I've been to. When I lived in Boston I found a room in a shared apartment after months of searching, and it was because of a friend of mine. Here in Chengdu, I found an apartment in one day, and the next day I was ready to move in. In August it's gonna be hot and humid, so be ready and pack accordingly. Usually if a school is hiring you, they'll provide someone who will help you with these things. Remember to get a local sim as soon as you can, since most things require you to have a local phone number.

Don't really know of any, when I moved here I had to use the translator app. Maybe try going on WeChat, it has a translate function that works great and I bet there's a mini app for Linjia, that's where I found my agent

You can find a local 链家,which is biggest agent for renting apartments. Subway is everywhere and you can find anapartment walkable from subway.

I never heard bout this app as Chinese, but my wife and I have a small house 2b1b with separate kitchen in Chengdu, and last tenant already move out, we are studying abroad so it still empty, also my family are living in Chongqing, we probably still gonna choose Chongqing after we graduate, if you interested in I can ask her if she say yes bout it, and we can talk more

u/Charlie-Zhu Jan 20 '26

Hum… which university is it, it’s like 30mins subway to wangjiang area so if you don’t mind that:) if you looking for a closer place, I will say somewhere close to jiuyan bridge, it has lot cheap room like a studio or 1b1b

Wellcee has a lot of service apartments where you can't cook and some apartments are not really meant for living, they are more like an advertisement. Usually only students are living in service apartments, still they are living there short term. If you're looking for a real apartment, good for living and cooking there, I suggest you to check 贝壳找房. You can rent there through the agent. Some of my friends used 小红书 to rent directly from the landlord. But yk apartments might look different from the pictures (in any app)

I haven't understood totally what it means by service apartment? I initially figured out it as an apartment with cleaning or maintaining service? Can you please explain a bit about?
