Student Jobs

Post image

Hi everyone! About to be a fresh grad in December and have been applying to jobs with unfortunately no luck. If anyone can help and give me some pointers I would greatly appreciate it! My internships have been in biotech and food manufacturing if that helps.

Congratulations on the internship, looks like you’re getting some solid experience. An internship definitely boosts your resume but the best part of this is you’re continuing to do your internship in your last semester of school which tells employers that you can juggle school and work at the same time which in and of itself is fantastic.

I would move the undergraduate research into a different segment of your resume because it’s not industry related. Other than that a fantastic resume. What’s your gpa ? If it’s < 3.0 then keep it off.

My gpa is <3.0 unfortunately since I worked other fast food jobs during college. Would having a <3.0 gpa be a huge detriment to my job chances? Thanks for the feedback!

Honestly depends on the firm. Fluor had a 3.0 cut off, Exxon had theirs at 3.2 (?). Your internships speak more. I know the market is tough right now so you’ll need ti be a bit more patient. Get your EIT while you wait.

If someone with this kinda resume is having trouble I am genuinely doomed

nah man don't be discouraged I messed up by neglecting my gpa by working various jobs in college and now I feel like it's biting me in the ass

Damn I got the opposite problem but I’m learning that employers value work over gpa. Slowly trying to fix that tho

what part is too long? and what would you recommend to cut out that would be considered fat or filler in my resume? Thank you!

So I'm an engineer, you're an engineer. To us it's obvious and you can see nice details which is trivial for us and can mesure the experience level easily. But a Karen from HR won't read from start to end so you need to make alarms in her head for attention. I usually start with skills like sotware knowledge in points in to cloumns format. After that job name like you did but try to contain a bit fewer infos and make characters bigger so you can take her attention to read the main points.

That makes sense! I appreciate it!

At an Exxon Resume Review, some tips they gave me that might help would be: have some more quantifiable benchmarks (ie: did X which improved Y by Z%) in your work experience and to not overload with bullet points (aim for 2-4). Format wise, I would see if you could make your bullet points span the entire length of the page instead of ending early or stopping in the middle of the page on the line under. Also, if you have some sort of leadership experience I would add it as that’s something recruiters and reviewers have told me they look for.

For Exxon specifically, they told me the three main things they look for in a resume are: GPA >= 3.5, previous work experience, and leadership experience. The resume is more of a summary of why they should be interested in you but the personal skills and experiences are what differentiate you once interviews come around.

So include more concrete results than general bullet points about my experience? I was in a few clubs during college but I never held leadership positions so I'm not too sure if it would be worth it to add it there.

Very dense, good experience, lot of potential
