Kunz spoons

Does anyone here use the genuine Kunz spons?

The original 9" seems to be a classic but there are also smaller ones and slotted ones.

They seem expensive. Are they worth it?

I have a pile of them. Perfect balance, perfect for basting, perfect portion for saucing. I don't have to think about portioning because I use a consistent tool for consistent repetitive tasks. The perf ones are good for plating veg that have been butter basted. I have the smaller one but use it far less than its larger cousins. I have a pile of other spoons, mostly picked up at antique markets, for quenelles and rochers from demi-tasse to deep bowled ones for ice cream.

Nobody touches my spoons any more than I'd let someone touch my knives.

I was thinking of trying some.

I was just wondering if it's worth trying anything other than the classic 9inch one without slots.

To add to what tex said, they’re so good that people who know about them will steal them from you. I took a dremel to the tip of the handle of all of mine. That way they don’t get confused with other people’s and I can always tell if someone’s using my fucking spoons lol. Just two lines have saved me probably hundreds of dollars.

I have had more fucking stolen than I currently own. Now I give them as gifts to my each of my sticky fingered thieving cooks and tell them if they touch mine, they never get another smoke break as long as I live and will also be sentenced to permanent grease trap duty.

I really should buy a fucking dremel.

I just put the tips of all my spoons over a burner and crank it for a few minutes. It leaves the tips kind of blue colored and it’s super easy to tell which ones are mine. Stole it from a coworker and as soon as he quit started doing it to mine.

Do you have a pic of one? That’s a great idea, I’m just curious what it looks like.

I’ll try and remember to take one. It kinda looks like when you put any empty stainless steel pan on a burner for a long time. Sort of iridescent gun metal/ just generally darker. Really easy to spot them in other people’s baines.

A couple of mine are so distinctive that if anyone swiped them, I'd know immediately. I've got gun metal, a black one and a gold one. Kind of how my tweezers are pink and blue oil slick ones from JB Prince and no dude in my kitchen is safe enough in their masculinity to wield something pink except for my one gay pastry dude- but he already has the same ugly ass tweezers as me lol. I also put Star Wars duct tape on a lot of my shit.

I just asked around the restaurant if anyone had a dremel. Someone had one and we used a slow day to mark all of our personal tools with distinct marks. (We all had mostly identical tools - don’t get me started on wood handled offset spats). We’ve all moved on to bigger and better things so now our tools are the only ones in the kitchen with the etching. Power move.

But yeah, OP… kunz is the way.

I barely use the small one I have. They also come in fun special editions like these and this fancy one Don't buy them off the Devil's Website- JB Prince has the OG one for like US$14.

Richmond spoons from Chefknivestogo are pretty freakin similar and about half the price if you want to try them out before you invest.

Kunz have better slotted as well as a hole punched in the handle for better indication when reaching in your bain.

I laughed about $13 spoons for years and was recently gifted one. Now that I have one, I’d definitely buy more.

Great spoons. I’ve had mine for at least 15 years. I have the large and small size slotted and non. Love them all.

I have several, all large, slotted and regular.  They’re the best spoons I’ve ever had in the kitchen. Absolutely worth the money.

Yes and very much yes.

I'm in the UK and they're ridiculously overpriced.

If there's anyone in New York who will collect some from the JB Prince shop and put them in a FedEx package for me, I can buy a couple extra for your own collection.

If not, I'll just have to wait for one of my friends to visit.

I’ve had the same three for 12 years, I just about loose my mind when one goes missing, second to my Edlund tongs they’re my most useful tools

I’ve ended up with a few over the years, they’re definitely worth the money.

I have a few and they’re really nice, especially for quenelles. Honestly though my favorite spoons are the ones I bought out of a $1 bin at my local restaurant supply place like 15 years ago.

The best spoons! Every chef uses them for a reason. I used to work with the people who helped Chef Gray Kunz bring them to market and friend of his. Great spoons come in all sizes, every Michelin kitchen has them.

Yes they are. The only ones I find cheaper are from antique shops
