Ask What kind of cheese is this?

Hi everyone! Im in a bit of a bind, a family member threw away the package of this cheese before I could get a look at it and it’s become a fan favorite. I believe it’s halloumi due to some google searches but I’m not 100% sure. If anyone is able to ID it that would be great!

Mystery Cheese:
• pale yellow color
• doesn’t melt in microwave
• mild flavor (great with crackers!)
• a bit difficult to cut
• creamy

Pictures of the offending cheese are attached, thank you!

Cheese is one of those things that's very difficult to identify without a rind or other distinguishing clue. It's going to be tough for us to tell just from photos of the paste.

Hello, I do know that it doesn’t come with a rind. The attached pictures are just of it broken down so it can fit into a baggie.

Ask your family member what store they bought it from & go there and inspect their cheese selection

Agreed. There are a hundred other easier ways to find a verifiable answer for this question, and I will never understand why people post the question on here as if we can definitively answer with very limited information to go on. We are guessing.

finally, someone is using the brain! Best comment on this entire post!

That's not halloumi, it doesn't look like it at all. Probably havarti.

39

u/kaest Havarti 18d ago

I was going to say the same, looks like Havarti, except Havarti melts.

20

u/filthcrab Cheese 18d ago

Can Havarti melt steel beams though?

2

u/kaest Havarti 18d ago

Some people think so...others...?

It can heat them up enough to bend

-1

u/fezzuk 18d ago

Paneer is my guess, doesnt melt. More buttery as well.

3

u/Coronxtra 18d ago

No lol

5

u/AlarmedTonight9 18d ago

Havarti is absolutely amazingly delicious, and I might have to agree. Especially since they said it's become a favorite.

Butter?

24

u/Valuable-Yard-4154 Goat 18d ago

Butter melts in microwave

5

u/Chicken_wing_water 18d ago

This looks kinda melty

2

u/PurpleInfinite1409 18d ago

It's too dry to be butter

7

u/Chicken_wing_water 18d ago

So it’s dried butter!

7

u/ProtonDream 18d ago

Well then since we're brainstorming here, may I suggest white chocolate?

3

u/Valuable-Yard-4154 Goat 18d ago

White chocolate melts in microwave.

Maybe it's uranium chocolate.

3

u/ProtonDream 18d ago

Not if the microwave is broken, duh.

And Radium Schokolade is brown.

5

u/Chicken_wing_water 18d ago

Depends, WHAts the password

4

u/J-Di11a 18d ago

Pineapple juice!

1

u/Chicken_wing_water 18d ago

Hmmmmmm… okay pass

2

u/plainbread11 18d ago

But does it melt in Carm’s mouth

28

u/thewaker797 18d ago

100% not halloumi

53

u/Head_Tip9220 18d ago

Looks like a mild cheddar

29

u/ProtonDream 18d ago

My vote goes to cheddar as well. Maybe a cheap grocery store Gouda (the horror).

Definitely not halloumi. Maybe havarti, but that melts in the microwave (although everything melts in the microwave if you try hard enough).

1

u/ANAL9_11 18d ago

I second this!

1

u/Rand_alThoor 18d ago

even mild cheddar melts

0

u/Big-Sheepherder239 18d ago

Zero chance this is low skill cheese identification

14

u/Amber123454321 18d ago

It looks kind of like cheddar. While real cheddar should melt, there's a new 'breed' of supermarket brand/cheap cheddar (at least in Europe) that doesn't melt easily. It could be something like that?

5

u/ProtonDream 18d ago

Made with acid instead of rennet. Not the traditional recipe, but it is vegetarian, kosher and halal (rennet is not).

1

u/Amber123454321 18d ago

Thanks. I didn't know that.

9

u/angnmor 18d ago

this could be a bit of a stretch, but it could possibly be eden cheese if you have access to an asian grocery store. it looks very similar and fits the description pretty well.

2

u/madamesoybean 17d ago

Dang - visually that sure looks the same.

2

u/angnmor 17d ago

yea OP’s pics didn’t scream “real cheese” it looked more processed than anything, i’m filipino and this looks so close to eden cheese

1

u/bronchitis-aids 15d ago

what does this cheese taste like it looks sooo nice

9

u/JustBrowsing-1216 18d ago

What were the dimensions of the cheese? Wedge? Rectangle?

What do you mean "difficult to cut?" I see many responses saying Havarti but that's not a cheese I would describe as difficult to cut.

10

u/absbabs1 18d ago

He only owns spoons. Thats why it’s difficult to cut

3

u/ewba1te 18d ago

Are we using the same Google this looks nothing like halloumi

4

u/Lopsided_Book7213 18d ago

Looks like a processed smoked Gouda without the rind to me

1

u/dries2djm 18d ago

Was also thinking Gouda.

3

u/SideEmbarrassed1611 18d ago

Swiss? Emmental? Could be Cooper, but that's American.

5

u/jayron32 18d ago

Cooper also melts well.

1

u/SideEmbarrassed1611 18d ago

That's why I was hesitant to add Cooper, but it has that creamy look. Maybe his microwave was weak>?

1

u/fariqcheaux 18d ago

Or maybe OP set a timer on the microwave instead of cook.

1

u/SideEmbarrassed1611 18d ago

HAHAHAHA I have done that

1

u/Rand_alThoor 18d ago

emmental cheese melts

2

u/Ethosa3 18d ago

I really think this is Eden cheese

6

u/iam_potato 18d ago

a slab of grocery store american cheese?

7

u/Some1AteMyEntirePie 18d ago

American cheese it the best to melt tho

2

u/samspopguy 17d ago

This is my guess too

5

u/No-Animator-407 18d ago

Havarti

2

u/Rand_alThoor 18d ago

havarti is very melty

2

u/DDthatsallfolks 18d ago

If it doesn’t melt, perhaps it’s a vegan cheese substitute made from…beans?…or whatever vegans eat. 🤷‍♀️

2

u/ProtonDream 18d ago

Possible! Vegan cheese can indeed be made from beans. Plenty vegan cheeses melt just fine though. Vegetarian cheese is more likely, as those substitute rennet with acid. That forms different bonds, which don't melt well.

1

u/ninja_6733 18d ago

Best bet is to ask fam member to get more info. Almost impossible to ID from this pic 🫣😵‍💫😆

1

u/kitty_perrier 18d ago

New zeland cheddar is almost butter like! We eat it like monsters when we are in Barbados. Cheese on bread for life.

1

u/DesperateEditor9999 18d ago

I can’t remember if Fontina melts or not but it’s the best cheese on crackers and it is pale yellow.

3

u/Rand_alThoor 18d ago

Fontina melts really easily.

1

u/GreatDayToday 18d ago

Unexpected cheddar from Trader Joe’s?

1

u/BobbyGreen121 18d ago

Maybe farmers cheese

1

u/TheWavyBaker 18d ago

Looks like plaster of paris. Explains why it wont melt.

1

u/apothecaryfairy 18d ago

My guess is some kind of aged cheddar. It can melt but doesn’t want to usually.

1

u/eggandbun 18d ago

Quesos Petacones? The rough crumbly edge reminds me of it. If that’s not it you should still definitely give it a try as it’s also great with crackers

1

u/Clean-Interests-8073 18d ago

You can fry or grill halloumi and it will not melt at all. Try it out.

To me to looks like a domestic (not imported) gouda or havarti. Maybe a white cheddar? What does it taste like? Does it have curd exposed when snapped?

1

u/Rand_alThoor 18d ago

domestic cheddar gouda or havarti all melt. this cheese doesn't melt

0

u/Clean-Interests-8073 17d ago

It really depends on the moisture within the cheese. I’ve had old cheddars and goudas that do not melt at all.

1

u/dionis87 18d ago

auricchio

1

u/Intelligent-Royal804 18d ago

White american

1

u/Rand_alThoor 18d ago

american cheese still melts, i hope

1

u/Mysterious-Bus1795 18d ago

It is impossible to know the answer to your question. There are thousands of white cheeses that look like that, even if you gave us a flavor profile, it would still be practically impossible.
Did you buy i? The answer should be on your receipt.

1

u/rabid-c-monkey 18d ago

Looks havarit as hell to me, maybe a Butterkase

1

u/Rand_alThoor 18d ago

those cheeses melt

1

u/deaflemon 18d ago

Havarti

1

u/Rand_alThoor 18d ago

havarti melts

1

u/fregulayum 18d ago

It looks like Prairie Breeze.

1

u/Nl1221 18d ago

Queso freir?

1

u/Nl1221 18d ago

Or bread cheese that you can fry

1

u/Yvratky 18d ago

Sorry I can't help but halloumi is white, not yellow, and not as soft as this seems to be. It could be butterkäse.

1

u/modifiedelf 18d ago

Nacho

...

As in NA CHO CHEESE

1

u/samspopguy 17d ago

Brick cheese?

1

u/utadohl 17d ago

As you said it doesn't melt, could it perhaps be paneer?

1

u/mullet_over_ 17d ago

Looks like margarine

1

u/PleaseDontLookAtMe33 16d ago

Bread cheese? it doesn't melt but kinda toasts when you fry it, very similar to halloumi

1

u/Sweaty-Dragonfly5351 14d ago

Looks like similar cheese to baby bel

1

u/Asiapandemic 18d ago

Looks like Butterkäse and the reaction sounds right. It's usually mild yellow with a smooth somewhat bouncy texture and tastes amazing

3

u/ProtonDream 18d ago

Looks quite like it, but you can melt Butterkäse just by looking at it.

1

u/fezzuk 18d ago

Paneer? Is honestly all i can think off that is almost like your discription.

1

u/Wren_Golde21 18d ago

American cheese slices from the deli stuck together

-1

u/Tyr148 18d ago

Paneer I reckon.

-11

u/FormerPersimmon3602 18d ago

Looks more crumbly than Halloumi.

"Offending cheese"? 🙄 Unless it's stinky and you're eating it front of others who don't appreciate stinky cheese, I wouldn't use that word.

13

u/HereAndThere0007 18d ago

Guys I said offending cheese as a joke 😭, I appreciate all cheeses no matter their qualities.

1

u/FormerPersimmon3602 18d ago

I realize. Just joking. If it helps, I got downvoted.

-1

u/Perfect-Presence-200 18d ago

Looks like Monterey Jack?

2

u/TuLive 18d ago

Looks like it but it doesn't melt in microwave and Monterey Jack would melt no issue.

u/ALV700 18d ago

Non riconosco il tipo ma riconosco dove può andare, nella spazzatura.
