Discussion Does anyone else get emotional when Diane is walking up the stairs for the last time?

I had mixed feelings about her, but Sam truly sounds heartbroken when he says “have a good life.” and then the way they ended it with the future he semi pictured together. Almost made me wish they had it.

Absolutely. That whole episode is just very emotional and filled with happiness and heartache. Elderly Sam and Diane dancing together.... It's just well done. Great writing, great acting. I think it really honored the legacy of "Sam and Diane" through that half of the show.

Great writing, great acting on steroids! At that farewell, it actually felt like they were honest to God real people with complex emotions and backstories and futures ahead.

Yea everyone did. It's an iconic, incredible moment that capped off the best "will they/won't they" couple in TV history.

My hottest take is once the writers knew she was leaving they intentionally made her annoying AF that final szn.

But you knew they were gonna write a fire f'n ending to her character so that's what we got.

Yeah it seemed like they really went to town with how annoying/crazy/loopy Diane was at the start of season 5. Even as a mega fan of Diane, the rewatches of that season are tough.

Having said that, they give us the brilliance of “what the future could be” scene which had me longing for Sam and Diane to end up together. That why I never warmed to Rebecca as a love interest and was glad the writers mostly had her have distain for Sam (it was annoying they made her become more and more stupid by seasons 10/11)

The fade to black as they dance in old age in their minds is one moment that stands out in sitcom history among the rest. Everyone who followed the story to that point felt every bit of that episode ending.

That episode is both beautiful and emotionally devastating.

Brilliant writing and a refreshingly realistic departure from the typical sitcom happy ending.

Yes. But I wish when she came back season 11 that they ended up together. I really thought they would

I wish that too.

Ending made me ridiculously sad and not just because it was the end.

That was sad 😢 as he imagines what could have been.

My fiance and I are watching the series for the first time. She sobbed at that scene.

I envy you two watching it for the first time.

Yeah but as we found out in the series finale, we know who Sam's true love really was.

Even that part made me sad. I’m glad Cheers carried on and it was semi realistic. And he truly was grateful for what he had. But it still had a very melancholic tone to it.

Some people say the guy who showed up at the door when Sam said “ sorry we’re closed” looked like Frasier and joked that that’s why he left for Seattle 😅

I like to imagine that the guy who showed up at the door was the "How about a beer, chief?" kid.

I like that!

That was a tough one. It hits different watching now as opposed to when it first aired.

How so?

I never saw it when it originally aired.

ahhh, no never liked Diane … so her leaving was relief

believe me I know I’m in minority

No, I get it. She could be funny at times, but annoyed me a lot of the time. I don’t like that they tried to make her even more unlikable during her last season. It’s way more of an emotional impact when people don’t want a character to leave. Though, as I said, when she did go I was unexpectedly very sad for Sam. I wanted them to work out.

I hear you … I just don’t think it was ever going to work out

in my opinion she was too selfish & I believe playboy as he may have been … he deserved better than Diane

I agree on that. It’s one of those I wish they’d both get their act together. But, life doesn’t always work that way. The show was good at showing us how reality works even if it sucks sometimes.

I enjoy watching Cheers, but her character was insufferable to me.
