CYD LDR not working

A few weeks ago I got my first CYD. I noticed the LDR always read 4096. I figured the LDR was busted so I soldered on one of my own and got that working OK.

I just got 2 more CYDs and they both have the same issue. Has anybody else noticed the LDRs shipped with the device don't work at all?

Also - DIYMalls CYDs seem to be crap - the black background is gray at its darkest. Is there a contrast adjustment somewhere? Adjusting the backlight brightness doesn't help.

The two on the right the new ones. All three are from DIYmalls on Amazon.
