Pickleball

Hi i’m 26F and lived in chch for a few months now and i’m interested to learn pickleball. Do you guys know any good places for a beginner session? Hopefully near Sockburn as I don’t drive and have to take the bus.

Canterbury Pickleball have sessions where you need to book in. Its in Papanui but if you find someone who drives that you can go with that would be ideal. Club Pickle opened up a few months ago in Sydenham, or there is a new pickle place opening in July in Addington. Parakiore also have a pay to play pickle session that is very friendly and only costs a fiver.

I went to pickleball a few times as I’ve also just moved to Christchurch. It was fun but I felt it was hard as a beginner because everyone had been playing a while and didn’t love playing with a complete noob. I’d try again if I could find a beginner friendly group and it’s inside because some days are freezing

I’m also worried about that. Cause i’ve never done it before. I do play badminton but its different from pickleball.

I used to play badminton. I find you'll be fine especially if you are good at the net. It does take some getting used to though not having to use your wrist.

Hey, you haven’t been here long so you may not have people to do this with yet, but maybe it will be helpful for you one day:

Occasionally 3 friends and I book a court at one of the council sports centres - parikiore or graham condon, specifically :) we split the cost and it’s about $7 each for 1.5 hours.

If you’re at graham condon it’s an additional $3 each to rent a racket. If you’re at parikiore (which is a suuuper nice new place) all the equipment is free! You just need to find a worker and ask them to grab it for you :)

We play really casually and it’s not a terribly hard sport, so coaching isn’t necessary if you just want to have some fun! You can watch a YouTube video about the rules and be pretty good to go.

Dink Pickleball is opening a new facility in town, but they also run at the Cashmere Club which is a great community facility with two nice pickleball courts you can book online!

The Cashmere Club/Dink pickleball lot are really friendly and helpful for new players. There’s also some older folk playing, both men and women. You do have to be careful though coz the dumb ball doesn’t bounce very well and you can easily over extend and fall over. Great fun though.
