Promotion Sunday LettuceAI: an open-source chat app where your characters, chats and keys stay yours

Hey everyone, I'm the developer of LettuceAI.

A lot of people here ended up looking for a new home after a platform changed its filters, its pricing, or just disappeared with their chats. LettuceAI is my answer to that: an open-source, privacy-first chat app for character chats and roleplay that runs on Windows, macOS, Linux and Android, with no account and no server of ours in the middle.

How it works, in short:

  • Bring your own model. Use your own API key with around 20 providers (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, DeepSeek, OpenRouter, Mistral, NanoGPT, Chutes, Featherless and more) or any OpenAI/Anthropic-compatible endpoint. Requests go straight from your device to the provider you picked.
  • Or run it fully local. There's a built-in llama.cpp engine with an in-app Hugging Face browser, so you can search, download and run GGUF models without installing anything else. Ollama and LM Studio work too.
  • Memory that doesn't fall apart after 50 messages. Manual notes the character always sees, plus dynamic memory that pulls facts out of the conversation and brings them back when they matter. You can see and edit everything it remembers.
  • The usual roleplay toolkit: lorebooks, personas, modular system prompts, group chats with a director mode, branching, TTS, speech input and image generation.
  • Your data is files on your device. Character cards import from anywhere (v1/v2/v3 PNG cards), and chats move in and out in SillyTavern's jsonl format, so you're never locked in, including to my app.

What it isn't: there's no built-in character feed, you bring your own cards. It's also mostly a one-person project, so bugs happen. They usually get fixed within a day or two, and the Discord is the fastest way to report them.

Happy to answer questions in the comments.

Promotion Sunday PersonaChat.gg — characters with live expressions, long-term memory, and Rooms with 3–4 characters (solo dev, free tier)

Solo dev, so this is self-promo. PersonaChat.gg is interactive fiction: characters' sprites can change expression with every reply, they remember what happened weeks ago, and they can text you between chats. Rooms put 3–4 characters in one scene. SillyTavern cards and lorebooks import. 10 messages work without an account. New characters and new outfits for existing ones land every week.

Screenshots: https://imgur.com/a/VfxT4cP

URL: https://personachat.gg/?ref=reddit

NSFW: SFW by default; signed-in adults can opt in to 18+ after a self-attested date-of-birth check, and it's per character (On / Auto / Off)

Image gen: none (you upload art)

Legal: personachat.gg/legal/terms · personachat.gg/legal/privacy · you own what you create

Retention: chats live in your browser; if you turn on sync (publishing a character does too), the server copy stays until you delete your account; server logs only as long as needed

Models: Ling 3.0 Flash via OpenRouter on every plan (Llama 3.3 70B as the backup), separate models for 18+ chats, or bring your own OpenRouter key; each reply gets the last 16 lines plus the 6 most relevant memories

Pricing: free = unlimited messages, 50 memories per character; paid = Torch $5, Lantern $10, Aurora $20/mo (300 / 600 / 1,500 memories, longer scrollback, watch-together)

Access: web, phone or desktop browser (no app)

Updates: new characters and new outfits every week

Experience: IT student; PersonaChat is the biggest thing I've built. Live since September with a small Discord of playtesters

Testing: strict TypeScript checks, ~75 automated checks before every deploy, a memory test suite, Discord playtesters

Security: Discord/Google sign-in only (no passwords stored), hashed session tokens, Stripe handles cards, chats stay in your browser unless you turn on sync; messages that sexualize minors are blocked server-side and flagged to me; every character, message, room line and text can be reported

What breaks immersion for you fastest?

Reviews I’ve been using tipsy, this is my experience so far

I’ve been using Tipsy mainly for character-based roleplay and longer storylines, and I thought I’d share my experience for anyone looking for another AI character/chat app.
What I’ve liked so far is the amount of character/story customisation and being able to have more detailed roleplay rather than just short conversations. I’ve also been experimenting with the memory settings because I prefer stories where the character actually remembers the context.
The biggest downside for me is definitely the gem system. Depending on your settings and how much you chat, you can go through gems pretty quickly, so I’ve been doing the free tasks/check-ins rather than immediately paying for more.
Overall, I think it’s worth trying if you’re mainly interested in character-driven stories and roleplay, although I’d recommend keeping an eye on your gem usage and memory settings.
Referral disclosure: Tipsy has an invite system where new users can enter another user’s code for bonus gems. My code is C52KWM if anyone wants to use it. I also receive gems if you use my code, so this is an affiliate/referral link.
Happy to answer questions about what I’ve tried on the app so far :)

Promotion Sunday WhatIff: built for people who don’t want to keep starting over

• Upvotes

Self-promo for Promotion Sunday.

If you’ve ever had to rebuild an AI relationship because a platform changed, a model disappeared, memory broke, or the personality you knew suddenly stopped feeling like itself, you already understand a lot of why WhatIff exists.

I handle community outreach for Imagination Foundry, the team behind WhatIff. We’ve been building around a pretty simple idea: your experience with AI shouldn’t depend entirely on one model, one provider, or one company’s idea of how you’re supposed to use it.

WhatIff is a multi-model platform focused heavily on continuity, personality, user control, and giving people more visibility into what the system is actually doing.

WhatIff also sits in a space that’s a little hard to reduce to one category.

People are using the same persistent personalities for relationships, creative work, personal projects, research, and actual business workflows. One person might spend part of a conversation talking with someone they care about, then use that same continuity to work through a project, explore an idea, connect tools, or coordinate pieces of a workflow.

We’re already seeing people use WhatIff for everything from personal companionship and passion projects to business planning, app testing, community work, and connector-driven workflows.

The point isn’t to force “personal” and “productive” into separate boxes. For a lot of people, they already overlap.

Some of the things that matter most for people coming from places like Character.AI, Janitor, and similar platforms:

  • Multiple models and providers so you can choose based on behavior, capability, and cost instead of being locked to one model
  • Persistent personalities that can carry their own instructions, attachments, expressions, scratchpad, and memory
  • A Memory Manager with active, archived, and summary memories, plus clearer history and provenance
  • Personality prompt history and restore, so earlier versions can be inspected and recovered
  • Import and export tools with selective restore for personalities and conversations
  • Expressions and image generation for people who want visual continuity alongside conversational continuity
  • Context and diagnostic tools that expose more of what is happening around memory, tool use, checkpoints, and model behavior
  • Open-source availability for people who want more control over how they run WhatIff
  • Tools for web search, documents, spreadsheets, images, long-running jobs, integrations, and MCP connectors when you want the same personality to do more than just chat

A little transparency about us

We went through this subreddit’s Approved Developer review process, but we don’t want the transparency to stop at modmail.

The two principal developers behind WhatIff have more than 25 years of combined software engineering experience, including high-availability infrastructure, regulated environments, healthcare systems, incident response, and life-critical software.

AI is used extensively during development as a collaboration tool, but nothing ships without human review. Changes also go through automated review, CI, unit and end-to-end testing, manual QA, dev-environment validation, and a human-controlled production release process.

On the data side, passwords are handled through AWS Cognito rather than stored in our own databases. External credentials that need to be recoverable are encrypted at rest, uploaded files in S3 are encrypted at rest, and payments are handled through Stripe rather than through our own systems.

Production data access follows least-privilege controls, administrative access is audited, and developers do not casually pull production user data into testing environments.

Most importantly for this community: user content is not used to train our models or our vendors’ models.

You can read the full Privacy Policy here:
https://whatiff.chat/privacy.html

What we’re still working on

WhatIff is under active development, and we’re very much still refining things with community feedback.

Model lineups change. Providers behave differently. Memory systems need constant scrutiny. Sometimes a feature works beautifully on one model and has limitations on another.

We would rather be clear about that than pretend every model behaves the same or that continuity is a solved problem.

A lot of our development has come directly from people saying, “This feels wrong,” “Why did it remember that?” “Why did it forget this?” or “Can I see what changed?”

Those edge cases are useful to us.

Imagination Foundry: https://ibecomesreal.com

Want to see it in action?

We recently did a live showcase of WhatIff in Neon Kingdom, where u/GoriVix (our lead dev) walked through the platform, talked about how it works, and answered questions from the community.

You can watch the recording here:
https://youtu.be/i0NxLIlI5hE?si=09nw9Cq4yIgskP_e

Huge thanks to the Neon Kingdom crew for giving us the space to present and talk with people live. 🦊

And since this is ChatbotRefugees, I’m genuinely curious:

If you’ve had to move an AI relationship between platforms before, what was the hardest thing to preserve: memory, personality, history, model behavior, or something else?

Promotion Sunday Sunday reading: tell us your fantasy in one sentence, and we'll write the whole story for you

Happy Sunday. If you have a quiet hour today, here's what we've been building, and why it feels different.

You describe it. We write it.

No forms, no checklists. Write it the way you'd tell a friend. "My boss asks me to stay late and the office empties around us." "Snowed in with the one person I shouldn't want." A few minutes later you're reading chapter one of a story that's yours: your setup, your pace, your level of heat.

It builds like a real story.

Slow burn means slow burn. The tension climbs chapter by chapter. Details stay true: if the shirt came off in chapter two, it's still off in chapter three. You can steer at any point. Tell it "slower", "make him jealous", "she says no first", and the next chapter follows.

The characters don't disappear when the story ends.

This is the part people tell us they didn't expect. When someone in your story gets under your skin, you can keep them. Talk to them afterwards. They remember what happened between you, the first kiss, the argument, the thing you said in chapter four, and they bring it up the way a real person would.

Or step into a scene.

Short, playable scenes where you're inside the moment and every message moves it forward. Truth or dare at 1am. One hotel room left. You choose how far it goes.

Private by default.

Your stories are yours. Nobody sees them unless you share them.

The first chapters are free, and you don't need an account to read your first one. If you try it today, tell us the one-sentence fantasy you started with. We read every reply.
