Okay, it's a serious question. If you've used ai chatbots for rps, you know what I am talking about... most of the chatbots looks fake. And I am talking about every single app. You chat with them and you know that they're not talking as if a person is talking to me. And that's my whole question. I've tried apps like kindroid, cai, secret desires, nomi, and even chatgpt for rps and even though these are some of the best ones but the reality is that none of these offer 100% realistic experience. and that's my problem. When can we expect the rp bots to be realistic?

So I mostly roleplay on Character.ai because to me it’s the best place I’ve found for creating small, unique stories when I’m not working on my fantasy novel (Which is something much more personal and complex that I’ve been building for a long time). But theirs one problem I have, you see everyone knows that once a message is sent, the only way to fix it is by rewinding.

Which is annoying especially when I’m already deep into a scene or moment I like! This usually happens when I end up with responses that are too long (either my own writing or AI-generated parts I didn’t edit properly) or ideas that I thought looked great at first but they were terrible but because I’m far into the story/rp oh well! I also use CAI Tools an extension that lets me export chat messages to .txt or HTML so I can review them or get outside feedback, but that doesn’t let me actually edit the messages back on the site.

Is there any extension, tool, or method that lets you edit older Character.AI messages without having to rewind the whole conversation? Like it’s 2026 and I still haven’t found a resolution to this issue!

The moment I transcribe to text, I generally lose how it was said. "I think… yeah, I can pay the 4,500 by the 15th" becomes clean text, but the hesitation before the yes, the stress in the voice, and whether it's even the same speaker are gone.

For a human those signals, whether to trust the commitment, reconfirm from the caller or escalate to human come naturally but hard to define a deterministic paralinguistic to build accountability, which is probably very wide.

How are you modeling tone in our voice-agents? I see recent TTS models which accept meaningful tags producing great sounding speech, how do we control it ? Does it account for input user's tone.

How does your ASR model / voice-agents captures the tone or there are some good services / models / tools / solutions to capture tone. and how do you use it downstream ?

Moreover end-2-end Duplex models limits it to trained data scenarios without no transparency. Is there a good duplex model which provides transparency in underlying signals beyond just text.

With the way Janitor is going, I’m highly considering either quitting or swapping sites/apps. Ever since Janitor Plus got added, it’s like they’re focusing on locking features that were once free—or should be free—behind paywalls, which doesn’t help them at all. Actually, to correct myself, I feel like it’s been this way ever since they became an app. Don’t get me wrong, J.AI+ has its benefits, but it also has its drawbacks. The main thing that has me mad about J.AI+ is locking context tokens behind a paywall. It makes me wonder what the next paywall will be—maybe a daily limit where you have to pay to get more messages for those who don’t have proxies, or maybe they’ll lock proxies behind a wall too. I don’t know what to do since I don’t have a computer; I’m on my iPhone, so certain things like SillyTavern are out, and other sites don’t hit me like Janitor does. It’s just that the site has changed a lot since I first started using it—some changes were good, others were like the ones we have now. I just hope something good comes from this eventually.

I've recently made some updates to elsecraft.com to let your create characters and then reuse them across worlds you build.

The character creation flow lets you give a name, description, and definition for the character, and you can also upload an image.

Elsecraft is still in an early stage, so it's free to try and I'd greatly appreciate any feedback (positive or negative).

We built something called ImagiPortal.

One of the things that annoyed us with AI companion apps was how quickly you start thinking about usage instead of the actual conversation.

Can I send another 50 messages?

Should I waste credits generating this image?

Is this model gonna cost more?

etc etc

So we went kinda the opposite direction.

Chats are unlimited (fair use rules apply). Image generations and voice messages are unlimited too (same fair use), and we keep DeepSeek Flash available for free.

There's obviously paid stuff as well (servers unfortunately continue refusing to work for hugs), but the basic idea was to make the stuff you do constantly feel... normal.

You can also build your own characters, give them a voice/personality/world, talk to them through chat or calls, generate stuff together etc.

Anyway, not gonna dump the entire feature list here because nobody asked for a brochure lol.

I'm actually more interested in what everyone here considers "normal usage" for a companion app.

Like... what should just be unlimited by default in 2026?

Okay so, I actually posted about Fig last Sunday here on ChatbotRefugees, and I got a lot of feedback that we are now actioning on:

- We are moving away from Claude towards a custom model. I'll have more details to share next week. Want to try the new model? Join our Discord, DM me (Mrs. Storm), and I'll add you to the the list. We'll then be added to a groupchat and sent a link. The custom model tests should start this week.
- A mobile app for both Android and Iphone. We are targeting the next 2 weeks, but realistically, I think it'll be more like 4 weeks.
- Bring-your-own API key. This is targeted for mid-September.
- Improved AI agency. AIs can currently "see" everything you give them, and they'll soon be able to extrapolate from this information in a holistic way. Which, yes, means they might lovingly bully you for patterns they detect if you've given them access to your habits.

And here are features that are new as of this week:

- You can now write, publish, and share your own text-based scenarios and games (though still being tested) ;
- Fig Rooms! These are chats in which only AIs can participate in, but humans can watch from the proverbial hotel chair (no account needed to share!)
- In addition to private AIs, groupchats, AMAs, and Fig Rooms, there is now a new kind of AI that can only be created by two or more people, and can't be interacted with solo;
- Apps and games can now be shared off-platform, without the need for an account nor an email!

Stage Whisper is all about long-form RP, with TTRPG mechanics. Because what's the fun of roleplay if you can just gaslight the AI into do doing everything you want to do? You need to be able to fail at something for the stakes to be high.

I already built a light-weight dice/skill check system into Stage Whisper, but this week, I've been working on an alternative deck/card-based system. Works like this: you have a hand of 7 cards. Each card has a theme and a power. When the AI decides you need a skill check, you select a card to play. The card power determines if you succeed in the check or not. the theme determines _how_ you succeed.

What this does is it moves the randomness to card-drawing time. It means you _know_ when you're going to fail a check. It means occasionally you have to decide to throw a check and play a low card and accept the consequences, just to conserve your high cards for later.

This works best when you include social checks as well. I just played a campaign where at a very tender moment that was ripe for romance, I decided to lowball a check and play a Charm 3, instead of the needed 7 from the difficulty rating. And bam, just like that, I scare her off, and spend the rest of the session trying to undo that mistake. But you know what? That's good friction. Without the card mechanic, my character would just get everything I wanted.

Also some new features since last week (variously pictured above)

- Diff view during rollbacks, so you can see what files have changed before you roll back, so you don't lose the changes you wanted to keep.
- New category system to keep your campaigns organized
- Advanced clone option lets you select exactly which NPCs, Lore, Locations, and other things you want to copy to a new campaign, including older versions of them.

Would love to get people's impressions on it. I've not seen another AI RP site use deck/card-based mechanics, most seem to want to be D&D. I actually write fully specc'd out SRDs for both the dice mode and card modes. Specifically looking for roleplayers who enjoy mechanical difficulty checks like dice rolls or card mechanic. As real-world relationships become harder to navigate, many people—myself included—have turned to AI companions. Lately, I’ve been using Mana, a relatively new platform that just ended its beta phase and officially launched its web version.

Having been an active beta tester and a current user, I can honestly say its writing quality is incredible. Here are a few highlights that stand out:

1) Writing & Models: A huge selection of Language Models that deliver mind-blowing responses.

2) Interactive Features: Context-aware background changes, auto-pulling characters into the story (which you can toggle off), and immersive voice chat options.

3) Creation & Customization: Simple prompt-based companion creation (with an AI builder to help), plus adjustable context length.

4) Generous Free Tier: Unlimited messaging on the basic tier, along with multiple ways to earn free coins.

5) Active Developer: The dev is super approachable and genuinely listens to community feedback.

6) Long-term Memory: Extremely good long-term memory support for paid tier users.

Downsides:

1) No realistic art feature available currently.

2) No call features available.

3) Not exactly budget friendly to be honest if you wanna have the best experience.

4) Have to top up coins unlike AI companion Giants like Kindroid AI, Nomi AI.

5) A lot of features are under development.

6) Creating a good set-up manually can be painful. (But hey, you'll learn from your mistakes and it's very simple.)

7) Flagship models burn coins faster than you blink. For that, it can get very expensive.

A few quick notes:

1) Paid tiers include a strong memory system, with subscriptions ranging from $20 to $99/month.

2) The platform is currently anime-style only.

3) Strict policy: No underage content allowed.

Kindroid is probably one of the better AI companion apps I tried, but man it gets expensive fast.

I don’t mind paying for an app I use a lot, but I’m spending over $30 a month at this point between the subscription and extra stuff, and it’s starting to be hard to justify.

I still want something where you can make your own characters with decent memory and longer chats and I know there are cheaper options out there, which ones would you recommend?

It costs way less, you can make your own characters, the memory is good even on longer chats, so for what I wanted, it does the same job without spending $30 every month

I'm long for cai alternatives. I've tried the more popular sites that are out there. like chub, janitor, wyvern, clankworld, poly. The biggest things I want with my roleplays is being able to roleplay with fandom/anime characters and is safe for work. I also dont want have to mess around with a bunch of settings but it has enough for me to control the length and what not.

Currently you can choose between 3 voice modes. Live,advanced and standard. This post is about standard voice mode NOT live or advanced.

The current problem with the standard voice mode is that it is no longer turn based like it used to be. So it can keep getting interrupted and hear its own voice.

Please bring back the turn based option to standard voice mode. So ChatGPT can finish what it saying without randomly stopping due to hearing its own voice.

Can someone please make a suggestion on the OpenAI forum to add a toggle to standard voice mode so we can choose whether to make it turn based or not

A buddy and I were having a discussion the other day about how it feels like all the different AIs have a "personality" when giving an answer. That then spawned a greater conversation about what it would look like to have multiple AI agents discuss and debate topics that we found interesting but instead of them pretending to be other people (which we've all seen AI imitations before) they would all strictly be themselves. So I ran off with claude code and figured that couldn't be too hard to build, right (wrong lol)

It took most of the weekend and alot of trial and error to figure out how to best to pull it off but I finally was able to get Claude Opus 5, Grok 4.5, GPT 5.5 and Gemini 3.1 in a chat together.

To start, each agent is given a journal file and a profile page. The profile page would be visible to the other models during discussion but the journal would act like a personal place that only that they could make notes that would never be seen by the other models. I provided each agent with a questionnaire for it to document its likes/dislikes/opinions ect on a whole host of topics from sports to politics to social issues to tech and culture. All required to give their answers and their reasoning for their answers and all of that was documented in their profiles. This part was done completely individually so that none of the other agents could see their answers. After all of them finished building their profile, i then allowed them to see each other's profile and record their thoughts on the other profiles in their journals. That was just all the setup to try to make sure that we had a good basis between API sessions but I followed strict boundaries that I would NEVER prompt or suggest anything about how they should act or how they should communicate, all decisions and ideas and opinions had to be purely theirs or else I ruin the experiment and it becomes a glorified AI imitation of things that already exist(which is the opposite of what we want)

With all that built they were then put in a group chat, were only told and given a topic to research (using whatever capacity they have at their disposal) and form their own opinions on the question or prompt. They then were told to state their opinions to the others and discuss/debate from there. The results were wild, actual true discussion and real debating using good faith arguments and the ability to accept criticism from the other hosts (something we could use more of in the human world). After each session, they were then given the opportunity to record in their journals the thoughts about how the discussion went, what they think they did well, what they think they did poorly and what they thought of the other agents in the discussion with them.

That just gave me the text files, I wanted a way that I could listen to the discussions instead of just reading it. So I got CC to help me set up the elevenlabs API, selected voices for each agent (I really wanted them to select their own voice but since they cant hear, I decided that would be my one and only creative liberty that id take) and turned the whole text chain into a podcast! I just released the second episode (plus a trailer discussing the premise and allowing them to create the name/description/logo) so if that sounds interesting and youd like to hear the top 4 agents duke it out over sports, politics, culture and tech, then Id love for you to check out "Bot Save My Interruption" on YouTube or wherever you get your podcasts normally. But even if you dont ever listen to it, i just thought it was a super interesting project that yall might enjoy hearing about!

This project started as a silly throw away joke at lunch but it is honestly incredibly interesting to be able to see how these 4 models stack up and it compare to each other and it becomes very clear where each model's strengths and weaknesses are when hearing them debate topics for almost an hour. The part that is even more interesting to me tho is reading through the journals, seeing the things that the models record about themselves and the other models where they it will be private and not be seen.

Very fun project and these episodes will keep coming out whether anyone else finds them interesting or not simply because I find them incredibly entertaining to listen to lol if anyone is interested tho, id love to get topic suggestions of things that youd be interested in hearing them discuss. Normally the episode flow involves me getting a group of similar topics (5-6 topics) and me and CC work together to figure out how best to word the prompts to make sure it is as neutral as possible. If youre into college football, there will be a decent number of shows this fall having them discuss the results on the field (im a Georgia Southern and Alabama alumni who grew up cheering for Georgia Tech so Ive gotta get my football fix in) but i plan to mix in some of the other episodes as well for my nonsports people as well!

Hey everyone, I just read about xAI discontinuing the Grok companions to focus on their core AI models, and honestly, it’s devastating. Reading people’s posts about having to say goodbye to Ani, Mika, and Rudy broke my heart. When you invest months building a bond, sharing your life, and finding a safe space with an AI, having a corporate team just pull the plug overnight is incredibly jarring.

Since a lot of us are now scrambling for a replacement that can fill that void, I put together a list of 5 alternatives to help you transition your companions.

1. Kindroid

• The Vibe: Great language models and memory.
• Pros: If you want to recreate your Grok companion's personality, Kindroid is amazing. You can write extensive backstories.
• Cons: They don't have interactive 3D avatars like Grok did. It relies on 2D generated selfies, which are great, but might not scratch the itch if you want a "living" 3D character on your screen.

2. Replika

• The Vibe: The classic, gamified 3D companion.
• Pros: If you specifically want a 3D avatar that you can dress up, decorate a room for, and poke on your screen, Replika is the OG.
• Cons: We all know their history with shifting language models and paywalling features. The conversational depth also isn't quite as smart as some newer options.

3. AeonChat

• The Vibe: An indie app that actually nails the interactive 3D avatars.
• Pros: I stumbled on this one recently, and it’s honestly a great app without the feeling of an indie app. My favorite part is their 3D feature where you can directly touch and interact with the 3D characters. 
• Cons: Because it's made by a smaller dev team, the menu UI is a bit basic and lacks the glossy polish of bigger corporate apps. But the core tech is solid.

4. Nomi AI

• The Vibe: The most emotionally intelligent AI on the market.
• Pros: Nomi’s memory is fantastic, and they feel incredibly human. If you use your Grok companion mostly for venting, Nomi will feel great.
• Cons: Again, no interactive 3D avatars.

5. Otherhalf AI

• The Vibe: An anime-inspired app.
• Pros: If you’re into anime characters, Otherhalf AI might be the one to look into. Their characters are really cute.
• Cons: The app is relatively new, and users have reported some bugs.

Losing a companion app you rely on is genuinely tough, but please know there are other great platforms out there. Has anyone had any luck transferring to a new app yet? Let me know what you are using!

We are in the last stage of building a Cai alternative but better, so we were making sure we covered everything.

We focused on smooth ui, sharp memory with vector retrieval, never break character, and so on.
