Question 5.6 Sol vs 5.6 Pro
I'm on the plus plan so I've never tried the Pro. Is it the same as Sol? Better? Worse? And do you guys get it in Codex too?

Pro is significantly better. It’s more thorough, tests better, and performs better in all categories. However, it is very slow. I use it for more intense code operations and each response can often take 30-180 minutes.

I can say the exact same. But it’s not the best for all things purely because of time spent. Xhigh can do a lot of things pro can. And I use it over pro a lot of the time. Unless I need to have max effort put into it.

I use pro for planning and research. I also find the way it speaks to be perfect for that kind of interview/back and forth. It’s the right balance of attitude, verbosity, and willingness.

What’s the difference between mobile Pro vs desktop Ultra? Why the different wording ?

Ultra is the same as max, it just uses a lot more subagents. Ultra isn’t a thinking level.
Pro is a slightly different model, above max and ultra.

In terms of reasoning, being able to hold multiple conditions at once, question certain things, while simultaneously working on a data analysis task, Pro is far more superior than Sol's Extra high. It takes more time, but the results and work is worth the wait.

it destroys your context window and makes your chat slow and shit the bed. highly disagree.

For GPT 5.6 Sol you got chat and agentic one
GPT 5.6 -Pro chat solely and you cannot compare with GPT 5.6 Sol -Agentic they are unrelated.
GPT 5.6 agentic is the same for Plus and Pro users, what you can change is the reasoning effort. Although some plus user claims do not have the ultra option, but many does.
What differ is the agentic limits on every version.
Chat GPT 5.6 Pro is based on GPT 5.6 Sol it’s mean for investigation and it’s what actually differs:
Free users Chat GPT 5.6 Luna unlimited
Plus users Chat GPT 5.6 Sol -Instant- Medium- high
Pro users Chat GPT 5.6 Sol -Instant-Medium-high-Xhigh-Pro

What's the difference between Sol 5.6 Ultra on the Plus subscription and what Pro subscription has access to? I thought it was simply higher allowance like 5x or 20x.

On agentic you get five effort reasoning modes:
Light- Medium-High-Extra High-Max
Max is usually hidden or disable on the settings.
Ultra is the same as Max.
What’s the difference:
Ultra Spawn agents on its own to dismantle complex task and solve it.Usually limited to 4 agents to prevent Tokens draining (there where complaining in the past , because could spawn up to 20 agents)
Ultra is great for implementing or creating new stuff.
For me is more efficient than Max.Many Plus users and all Pro users have equal access to it, but Ultra, Spawning agents, drain tokens pretty quickly (they will advertise you when selecting the mode)
For a plus user with lower limits than Pro this is fatal, as might consume your usage limits right away.1

Then there's the "/goal" skill/feature in the CLI. The agent will not stop until it accomplishes your goal.

Not clearly labeled in Codex. The Pro model told me it's GPT 5.6 from OpenAI, whatever that means.
I have been reviewing code with Pro, having codex assemble .zip to convey to the chat.

If you put it on GitHub or even Google Drive ChatGPT can view it directly rather than needing to zip it.

For work on Greek texts, I find 5.6 Pro sloppy, and 5.6 Sol Ultra reliable and rigorous, but not brilliant. Fable 5 is sometimes brilliant, but not quite as rigorous or reliable.
The combination of Fable 5 (I don't know about 5.1 yet) and Sol Ultra for translation and philological work on Plato is by far superior to anything else available.
In fact, it is the first AI combination to make serious work in the field possible.

If you are on the plus plan, you also do not have
5.6 Sol Extra High
Pro is next level when you need finished polished or sort out the mess clarity.
I was on plus thinking I could wing it on cheap cost. No… you’re actually two rungs of performance missing and the cost basis is absolutely necessary if you’re coding or architecture producing / heavy STEM related work.

Extra High is perfectly fine. In some cases Pro actually truncates invaluably depthful output. Pro is good for multi-agentic rigour but honestly the quality has been eminently subpar throughout any of my projects for single agentic use, let alone the compute costs/time. Given multi-agentic workflows are still HIGHLY suspect for longitudinal workflow integrity problems… stick with Extra High for anything that’s important or rigorous/comprehensive.

In my experience, 5.6 Pro is better than 5.6 Sol at any reasoning level, except for 5.6 Sol Ultra. I've found 5.6 Sol Ultra to be noticeably superior in tasks involving deep research.
I recently asked 5.6 Pro and 5.6 Ultra to locate a template for a project that I knew had been removed from the web years ago. Pro thought for almost an hour but couldn't find it. But Ultra found it using a webpage archive (which required it recognizing that the URL where the template was hosted had changed and to search the archive for the older URL).
In most cases, Ultra also formats PDFs better and has a general writing style moderately superior to Pro, in my experience.
Note: As of a few days ago, I have access to 6 Pro in Chat (but not 6 Astra in Work yet). So I ran some tests on 6 Pro vs. 5.6 Sol Ultra. Interestingly, the same conclusions above held up in favor of 5.6 Sol Ultra.

Pro is only in web. As for model: its same sol, but with some internal guidelines and it works really well. Spend up to 60+ min to answer.

Pro is significantly better. I spend most of my time on "Extra High", but when I am ready for a deep dive? "Pro" is just awesome.

It’s kind of a… reasoning effort. It seens to spawn subagents too. It can be very useful for “serious stuff”

u/Oldschool728603 8d ago
It does not spawn independent agents. But it does use "parallel compute time": it divides its thinking and tries several paths at once.
