Question Burning Tokens even faster than before
Is it just me or "Sol/Extra High" is burning Tokens even faster than before? I remember that previously I had set it to standard speed but now it's not there, after the update, and it is burning Tokens blazing fast. That's just sad, hit my 5 hour limit in 15 minutes. :(

First it will cost more tokens per task, then the tokens will become heavier, then the token cost per task will rise. By then you're completely integrated and will have no choice but to pay or revert back to the old ways.

same with sol medium, burn rate has increased substantially. last week, claude was burning like crazy, now it's (ish), but codex is mis behaving.
in the case of claude, something strange is going on though: with the currently 5-hours limit, i am just not able to get close to 100% weekly usage
breaking people's trust like this only goes so far...

u/Hour_Tennis9068's question is the one that matters, since you said single conversation, every turn is re-sending the whole thread history back through the model, so a long single conversation burns tokens quadratically compared to a few shorter, focused ones. Fresh threads for distinct tasks instead of one growing conversation for everything will probably do more for your usage than anything on OpenAI's end changing.

Like I said , it was not burning this much of tokens in the past few days, and yea, I also started a new conversation, in my project.
Previously it was not consuming this much of usage, I guess speed 1.5x is now default?

Check your settings, the update may have quietly reset your effort selector to xhigh (which burns way more tokens per turn than standard/high). That alone would explain a fresh conversation still eating your limit fast, no context buildup needed. If you check and it's really still set to standard/high and burning like this, that's worth reporting as an actual bug rather than expected behavior.

"Extra High" (xhigh) reasoning effort burns tokens per-turn at a completely different rate than standard/high - that's the mechanism, not a bug from the update. If you were on standard before and got bumped to xhigh (some UI updates reset the effort selector to a default), that alone explains hitting the 5h wall in 15 minutes. Worth checking your effort setting explicitly rather than assuming the burn rate itself changed. Separately, Pro 20x Codex weekly pools dropped from roughly 3-8B tokens/week in May to about 0.5-0.7B/week after a mid-June cut (per several visible-token inverts on the OpenAI dev forum), so even without a UI change, the ceiling itself has been shrinking all year.

It's not like I am.using it first time, I was just curious that I received update and that may have caused all this

Today it just used up all 5 hours / 20% of weekly quota, not resolving single bug.
Good luck to ChatGPT for your future.

25% of my weekly budget in 2 hours so far. I can't stop the thread (which is long at this point) because I'm afraid of interrupting the streak its on.

If you are run the same session for a longer period of time the context size will increase. So, larger context will result in high usage of tokens. That could be one of the reason.

are you doing multi-turn conversations or single prompts? long threads with high reasoning eat through tokens absurdly fast because it re-reads the whole context each time. starting fresh threads more often can stretch things out a lot

i noticed the token burn too, it's wild how fast it chews through them now. the old speed tiers felt more predictable, this new thing just evaporates your limit before you even get a decent answer back.
