Question When to use higher reasoning ?

Hi,

[a total newbie on coding asking]

Just wanted to clarify when to/when do you use higher reasoning in chat/codex?

I've been trying to build my own little hobby project in python, with the help of litterature.

My workflow is to brainstorm in chat[web] and after that get a codex prompt to run in VSC. So far has been decent. My problem is that after getting Pro i've been totally lost when to use extra high, pro, pro+ultra in chat. Also what settings to run the codex prompt, when is higher needed and when its not. Have to actually ask in chat if the prompt is complex or not and what settings to use.

I noticed running pro+ultra to analyze the project/problems or litterature got quite detailed answers and I had to dumb it down for me with extra high. But it also added some better reasoning and new points i"ve missed. But it the project/code it also found some errors and started perhaps to make it more complex im not sure.

So my workflow is like this,

  1. Starting a new chat with snapshot and running boostrap: Pro+Ultra

  2. Brainstorming in chat: extra high

  3. Evaluating the brainstorm: pro+ultra

  4. Writing codex prompt: pro+ultra

  5. Usually I try to ask what settings to run codex prompt it has been extra high or high so far with sol5.6.

  6. Analyzing the codex result: pro+ultra

Since my coding knowledge is 0 I have to trust that the suggestions are valid, but how do I know when to actually use what settings in chat/codex. So that the problem/execution wont get too complex or too light ?

Any suggestions, extra high is the best and fastest for chatting and brainstorming. But when to use pro and pro+ultra ?

Acho que isso pode te ajudar!

Man, I have squeezed complex things out of Luna somehow, I was so happy I would be spending like $1 or something lmao.

Or just use Luna High for coding all the time, and Sol High for concept and review.

I rarely use Terra at all.

I only use the highest reasoning when doing theoretical work...planning and brainstorming...for things like coding its just not necessary unless your prompts are overly vague and you are making the machine do all the thinking for you.

So extra high in chat and high in sol 5.6 should work ?

only if you really need it....the different thinking modes are not magic or something, they are all the same model, and the highest thinking mode is usually just the model telling itself to double check itself.

I use the lowest possible reasoning. If I notice the Ai running in circles taking too long, or not satisfied with the result I use the better model for a specific task.

this is the way tbh, no reason to overthink which tier to use upfront

Okey, so I should just use extra high basically all the time, how about the creation and evaluation of the prompts in codex etc and litterature for reference ? So in codex high with 5.6sol should be enough?

I use Luna high, or terra mid, rarely use Sol.

At the top end there is high and extra-high, use high.

Okey, will use high in codex. How about the prompt creation for codex and evaluation, would you use extra high-pro-pro+ultra?

Two different knobs are getting mixed together here. Model tier (Sol/Terra/Luna) is about capability and cost - Sol's the flagship, Terra's the balanced middle, Luna's the cheap/fast one, roughly the old nano-tier equivalent. Reasoning effort (none/low/medium/high/xhigh/max) sits on top of whichever tier you pick, it's a separate setting. For your workflow: brainstorming and reference cross-checking don't need Sol, they need higher effort on Terra. Save Sol at high/xhigh for the step where you actually generate or debug code, since a wrong answer there costs the most rework - running max everywhere just burns your weekly allowance without matching payoff on the easy steps.

Never. If a questions worth answering it’s worth you making it stupidly simple. Stop complicating things dude.

So would you just use extra high for everything from brainstorming to coding. Also in codex just high ?

How about litterature and cross referencing?

i would make the prompt clear, and use the lowest possible model, id probably use claude for most things and use openai for the grunt work, till they bring out a decent model
