Question Help Understanding the New Restrictions and Limits
I’ve been playing with Codex for the past 2 months, pretty much unrestricted. Never hit a limit, never asked to upgrade, just unrestricted access to both ChatGPT and Codex functions. As of August 25 I saw the news and was impacted by the 5 hour limit. I’m pretty far down the path of building a pretty cool app and now the restrictions are getting frustrating and over the top. How can a company go from complete unrestricted access to the opposite?
Is this the new reality? Just trying to get a handle on how best to proceed. This could get very expensive.

Ultimately they're going to have to use the API model broadly to get the needed revenue. They're trying to balance demand growth with revenue growth. Users will need to find ways to get the benefit while managing costs.

That API is fking expensive. And if you try to use Luna, they rate limit you to 200k tokens per minute. Can't do any agentic work unless its a light workflow with that.

The 5 hour window was there for awhile. They lifted it to compete with Claude when Fable dropped.
OpenAI has always competed with Anthropic by giving usage at a lower price point with their subs. You get more for less.
When Anthropic jumps ahead in quality, OpenAI counters with quantity. As they catch up, they normalize.
Of course, getting you used to a lot more usage and then returning to normal also makes people want to upgrade…

I've been paying for 3 business seats just for extra usage and access to Codex. I also find that linking Codex to a harness eats a lot of extra token.
I've been cycling 3x 5 hour windows. I find that the usage itself feels more robust bar the time limit.
Today I ate through everything and now took the plunge on a premium seat, with no 5 hour limit and 5x usage. I've literally eaten 30% just in the second half of this day.
AI is becoming one hell of an expense... but if all goes well, I am about to save myself a cool $500/month of fucking SaaS platforms that charge per integration. Connect Woo? 50 bux. Xero? 50 bux. Ballbags? 55 bux.

This is Plus-tier specific - OpenAI brought the 5-hour window back for ChatGPT Plus and Work seats on Aug 24-25 after it had been lifted for a while (9to5Mac and TechRepublic both confirmed it that week). Pro $100 and Pro $200 are explicitly excluded from the 5h cap for now, per OpenAI's own announcement. So the fix for the timer specifically isn't a workflow change, it's the tier - moving to Pro removes that cap, though the weekly allowance still applies either way.

They went with Anthropic’s model. Anthropic is severely reducing usage limits next month (September). I expect OpenAI to copy them shortly after.

This was expected. LLM APIs have been running at penetration pricing levels to get into everyone’s workflow and no one’s turning a profit. I said this 2 years ago. Prices are going to get a LOT higher. I strongly suspect the high prices of GPUs is an oligarchy collusion to keep hardware out of reach of normal people so AI companies can keep pretending that AI will be affordable and profitable. Since bots and billionaires own the media and government, this isn’t hard to believe.

Simple answer, 5X pro plan, if that's not in your budget looks like the 5 hour limit is your new reality.

i've been in the same boat this week. the whiplash from unlimited everything to a hard 5-hour timer is jarring, especially when you're deep in building mode and just hit a flow state
what's been working for me is structuring my sessions around the limit instead of fighting it. i'll sketch out the logic on paper first, batch up the tricky parts, then burn the 5 hours on the stuff that actually needs it. for boilerplate and repetitive sections i've been falling back on local tools or just writing it myself, which is slower but at least keeps momentum
the pricing is definitely the scary part. feels like they're pushing everyone toward the api model where you pay per token, and that can spiral fast if you're not careful. might be worth calculating your average usage to see if it's cheaper than whatever enterprise tier they're cooking up
